2.0 out of 5 stars Would be much improved with ruthless editing, 20 Nov. 2008
This review is from: Couscous [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
The story had the potential to make a very good movie, but it lacked editing. As a result I was excruciatingly bored throughout much of it, and found the lengthy display of appallingly dysfunctioal parenting extremely depressing. I went to sleep in it, not because of excessive tiredness, but to escape the endless dreariness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return to glorious Provence and childhood, 15 Oct. 2008
Exquisite scenery, brilliant photograhy, wonderful understated acting, great autobiographical story by the film maker Louis Pagnol (Jean de Florette etc) told with sensitivity and humour and seen through the rosy glow of fondly remembered childhood experiences. Totally delightful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steeped in the scenery and ambience of Provence and childhood innocence, 14 April 2008
This review is from: La Gloire De Mon Pere [DVD] (DVD)
Unbelievably beautiful scenery and photography, childhood holidays seen through slightly embellished memories...as one does. I've seen it several times and hope to live long enough for another few viewings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bab Aziz, the mesmerizing music, but where is the DVD?, 25 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Bab Aziz (OST) (Audio CD)
The music, wonderful as it is on its own, is the sound track of an exquisitely filmed, haunting movie about a desert pilgrimage I think in Morocco, with the scenery a constantly evolving artwork. Please bring out the complete art work!!!

However failing that, don't deprive yourself of the exquisite soundtrack of haunting middle eastern music, its indescribably beautiful.

Note: since I wrote the above, I've acquired the DVDs of the whole Desert Trilogy, and the cinematography is superb. Works of art from beginning to end. Technical quality of the DVDs is excellent too.

5.0 out of 5 stars animation artwork with a heart of gold, 26 Mar. 2007
This is the most exquisite animated film I've ever seen. The story is full of eccentricity and tolerance, the animations true to the illustrated book, and the background scenery is beautifully designed. It is full of humour and wit, and leaves you with a smile on your face. It is great for kids, but adults will see their friends and relatives portrayed in caricature and enjoy it just as much on a different level.
