This is an excellent account of an extraordinary investigation and sustained campaign for justice. It sheds great light also on the less visible aspects of the Nazi persecution of Jews - the huge consequences for families robbed of everything they had during the 1930s and forced to find some kind of sanctuary wherever they could.

Great follow up to The Best of Our Spies. This story is every bit as good, with Alexis Gerlis showing extraordinary subtlety in the ways he builds the narrative. His characters feel so much like real people, facing terrifying situations and agonising choices. The backdrop of wartime Europe is woven in with equal skill - the bizarre paradox that much of daily life remained so normal in the midst of the terrible abnormality of Nazi power. This is a really compelling novel which also conveys the depth of the pain and suffering during those terrible years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, beautifully told, 2 Mar. 2013

This is a great story, enhanced by intricate and subtle characterisation. The differences between life in wartime Britain and occupied France are very well described, as are the thoughts, fears and motivations of the key figures. Alex Gerlis presents the moral dilemmas of wartime simply and without prejudice and creates a book which is exciting, moving and thought-provoking. A real pleasure.

No Empty Chairs: The Short and Heroic Lives of the Young Aviators Who Fought and Died in the First World War
No Empty Chairs: The Short and Heroic Lives of the Young Aviators Who Fought and Died in the First World War

5.0 out of 5 stars No Empty Chairs, 13 Oct. 2012
I was contacted by Ian Mackersey when he was doing research for this book. He was investigating a parachute invented by my great-great grandfather. This was offered to the War Ministry, but no order was ever placed. The lack of parachutes left our pilots without any means of escape, effectively sentencing them to death if, as often happened, their plane was hit and caught fire.

This was of course but a tiny detail of WW1 and became about half-a-page in Ian's book. I must confess it was initially my prime interest. But I became engrossed the extraordinary story of 'No Empty Chairs'. This book is a wonderful synthesis of an overview of the conflict and the personal experiences of those who developed the various element of the air force, and the young men (and latterly women) who flew the planes. Superbly written, I found it utterly compelling. It seems to me to shed so much light on the incredible courage and resolve shown by many individuals, but also on the collective madness at the root of the conflict.

The book provides a great deal of information, but never for a moment loses its narrative thread. Aspects that are better understood today than they were at the time, such as combat stress, are very clearly presented but the author is scrupulous in his judgements. Above all, 'No Empty Chairs' is profoundly moving. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
