5.0 out of 5 stars More than just a great chiller, 13 Jun. 2016
This is a dark and shadowy tale of an old house and its secrets which form an uneasy backdrop to the events described.Hale farm is a traditional homestead in Upstate New York which has endured through the vicissitudes of conflict and decline. Part One of the novel opens in the winter of 1979 with college lecturer George Clare moving in with his wife Catherine and their child,Franny. What George knows, but Catherine does not, is that they are able to afford the house because it has been hard to sell due to a horrific event which occurred in the main bedroom the previous year. Catherine senses something not right with house and can feel an unseen presence from the start. So far so spooky.
However, this book is so much more than a creepy chiller; as Parts Two and Three progress, we are introduced to characters, both living and dead, in particular four women, who all have a story to tell about life, death , and relationships between the sexes. We encounter cold, manipulative George, damaged young Willis, abandoned sons, people making the best of their lives or sinking under, people who are jaded or disillusioned. Interpersonal dynamics are deftly handled and the characters are convincing and on the whole sympathetic, with the obvious exception of George Clare who has superficial charm but is at heart inadequate, manipulative , ruthless and completely lacking empathy. I found the characters and plot absorbing and compelling, as events in past and presence grimly unfold. The author interweaves the action with themes of art, life and death which enrich the reader’s experience.
This is beautiful and subtle writing, with great atmosphere and a cracking and satisfying plot.
