4.0 out of 5 stars Great film from a great director (Oliver Stone), 2 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Salvador (Region B) (Blu-ray)
Great film from a great director (Oliver Stone), with a decent - if unspectacular - blu-ray transfer. Still an noticeable upgrade from the DVD version of the film. As advertised though, this is a Spanish released blu ray. Given this film is currently not available on blu ray in the UK, it's the only way to own this on a Region B playable disc. However be advised, whilst it features an English language soundtrack some characters in the film speak in Spanish (native language of El Salvador) and these scenes do not features English subtitles (and the disc does not have an English subtitle option). Understandably so, I guess, as it's a product produced for the Spanish market. I'm quite familiar with the film, so admittedly it didn't affect my viewing pleasure too much, but for others it might. Rating is for the film, not the disc, which would loose an additional star or two for the reason given. But to be fair, it's exactly as it says on the tin so to speak.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful Blu-Ray Transfer **Awful**, 22 Dec. 2014
This review is from: 28 Days Later [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Good film, and certainly worthy of more than one-star, but this review relates to the blu-ray version and I'm afraid the transfer is absolutely god awful. In some ways, the look of the film was intended by it's director Danny Boyle, supposedly to replicate CCTV like imagery. However, it simply doesn't lend itself to the blu-ray format. High definition? There is no definition whatsoever in this blurry, washed out image devoid of any fine detail. I can't remember the DVD looking this bad but admittedly no longer have it to compare to. But it really does look bad. So in short, if you do have the DVD and was considering an upgrade, then don't bother. There's no point. I haven't seen a film transfer look this poor since the days of VHS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Temple of Doom Uncut, 8 Sept. 2012
***Blu Ray Release***

Specs for this product on another website state that, for the first time ever in the UK, the blu ray will feature the UNCUT version of INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM. Having seen the uncut version on Region One DVD from the states, this is great news and will save me having to track down the US version of this release instead. Some of the cuts for gore and violence inflicted upon the film on it's initial release in the UK - at the time in order for it to pass as a PG certificate - were rather jarring and it will be great to have this on Blu Ray as Spielberg and Co. originally intended it to be seen!

The final installment aside, which was a disappointment, this set features some of the greatest and most enjoyable family adventures films in the history of film.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good Film, poor Transfer, 21 Jan. 2011
Good solid film - but disappointing blu ray transfer. That said, this is a dark film - as in it's mostly set in a dark environment - and it was never what you'd call a pretty film to look at to start with. It's a little frustrating that people compare it to, say The Dark Knight, in terms of transfer quality. This is a much older film. That a film is 'grainy' is often the intended look of the film by the director and not necessarily a slight on the transfer itself. That said, even by the blu ray standard set for some older films where there is an obvious and sometimes considerable improvement; this is by contrast little better than it's DVD counterpart. Those expecting a pristine, re mastered version of this film will be very disappointed. My advice is buy only if you don't already own this on DVD. Simply put, not worth the upgrade as good as the film may otherwise be. The Star Rating reflects the blu ray quality rather than the film, which is easily worthy of 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Blu Ray Transfer, 27 April 2010
This film is argulably the greatest war film ever made and looks fantasic on blu ray. I had this film originally on VHS, then DVD and now blu ray and it's never looked as good as this. Those complaining of grain within the picture should bear in mind that the grainy, saturated picture is exactly as Speilberg intended. This is how it was purposely filmed to give it a specific look and feel. That aside, the level of detail previously unseen is stunning and demonstrates how great blu ray is - can be - over it's DVD counterpart. An absolutely stunning film to be sure with some of the most devastating and realistic combat scenes ever filmed, most notably the celebrated opening sequence, and is more than recommended on blu ray.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Spectacle, 20 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Avatar (DVD + Blu-ray) (Blu-ray)
In term of pure awe inspiring spectacle, AVATAR has few peers. I'll be interested to see how it transforms to the smaller screen, such is it's sheer size and scale - but I'll be certainly buying it. But why a Blu Ray and the DVD in one set? Surely you either buy one or the other? Apparently this is already common for a lot of releases in the states but personally, I just don't see the point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent film, stunning Blu Ray, 9 Oct. 2009
On Blu Ray, this looks stunning. Simple. Is the film any good, though? To be honest I found it enjoyable and at times genuinely gripping, but not great. A minor gripe I suppose, but I thought the German Characters speaking with American (Cruise) and British accents marred the authenticity for me. I can't begin to appreciate the film-makers reasonings behind such a decision; but Cruise as a top ranking German Soldier making no attempt to sound German comes across as lazy on the part of all concerned, particularly given a great deal of time and effort went into accurately recreating the period and events the film portrays.

5.0 out of 5 stars De Niro Classic, 9 Oct. 2009
The Deer Hunter is a classic of 70's cinema. Hugely controversial in it's day due to it's depiction of the Vietnamese during the infamous Russian Roulette sequence; this is more a metaphor for the brutality of war, the violence and sudden death rather than an accurate depiction of the treatment of American POW's during the war - and highly effective and shocking it is. But The Deer Hunter isn't just about war, it's more about the impact war itself actually has on communities, how even those on the peripherals are affected and how lives, friendships are forever changed and devastated. And on that level, The Deer Hunter is one of the most important and powerful films of modern cinema. This film is over 30 years old now and over the years I seen in on various mediums: VHS, DVD - and now Blu Ray. Whilst films of a similar age will never match their more modern counterparts for picture quality; this is by far the best - absolutely the best - this film has ever looked on the home entertainment front. If you have it on the DVD, then it's certainly worthy of an upgrade to Blu Ray. A masterpiece to be sure, with brilliant performances from Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro at his peak. Beautifully packaged too in a book like case, with a detailed and informative booklet on the making of the film. In short, a must-have for fans and admirers of the film and those who enjoy genuinely classic cinema but have yet to discover this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make your Own Mind Up!!!!!!!, 10 Sept. 2009
This is a modern cinema great for sure, and the absolute pinnacle of director Ridley Scott's career. This is a monumental release on Blu Ray given the film's popularity - and having just watched it (for the umpteenth time, but the first time on Blu Ray); I cannot for the life of me grasp where all the negativity comes from in terms of the transfer quality. I'm admittedly not an expert on the finer technical details of picture quality and video transfers - and let's be fair here, few who buy this will be either. That said though, to my eyes at least GLADIATOR looks fantastic on Blu Ray - and those who are in any doubt should make up their own minds. I too was a touch wary having read some of the reviews, and perhaps to the trained eye there may be deficiencies in the picture... but I for one just don't get where all the whining surrounding this release comes from. I've seen some Blu Ray's I have been disappointed with - this ain't one of them though; in fact, I'm completely satisfied with it. Great movie. Great looking. And a vast, significant improvement over the previous DVD releases!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Absolute Classic, 13 Aug. 2009
Sorry, but I'm not sure what on earth the previous reviewer is talking about - or indeed what they was expecting from this album. Not the Synth album?? This is the film's original soundtrack as the music appears in the film, albeit in extended form from versions previously released - and it's an absolute classic of film scoring by John Williams, one of the greatest film composers in the history of film. There is little else I can say really, other than sheer brilliance.
