5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant, eye opening read about midlife online dating., 1 Dec. 2016

This is like reading a book about myself - a middle aged woman looking for new love after a marriage breakdown and being constantly disappointed by not having her feelings and effort reciprocated by the men she meets online.

I love Stella Grey's writing style and I was delighted to find she had written a book that followed up on her weekly column in the Guardian on the same subject. I can identify with so much of what she writes.

Reading this will make you both nod along in agreement and shake your head in disappointment at the stupid things people say and do when they join the ranks of the online dating community. It makes you sad that there are so many bad/lazy/rude people out there, but also gives you faith that, in amongst these, are a few gems waiting to be discovered.

Excellent for the price. Okay, they are falling apart a little round the edges now, but 6 months of daily use by under 10's? You can't really complain for the price they are.

A good fit too

1.0 out of 5 stars Sheds fluff at an alarming rate, 22 July 2016
At first glance excellent value for money.

However, on the first use they shed vast amounts of blue fluff - on me, the floor, everywhere. I thought washing them would help, but no, still shedding.

I guess you get what you pay for.

Annabelle Costa's stories are amazing. She could basically write her shopping list out and I would stay up until midnight to read it. So reading 'The Ugly Duckling' was a pleasure for me to undertake.

We hear the story from the leading lady Libby's point of view. Libby has always been attracted to shallow, unfaithful, but stunningly good looking men. Her latest boyfriend is no exception to this rule.

Approaching thirty, Libby desperately wants her boyfriend Jude to be 'the One'. But Jude has other ideas. How long can their tenuous relationship continue?

Of course, to add the love triangle aspect, there are more than two people in this story. Jude has a best friend, Will. Will loves Libby, Libby loves Jude and Jude...well Jude loves any woman in a short skirt.

Will Libby ever be able to see that her boyfriend (although gorgeous on the outside) is a selfish idiot and that Will is the perfect man for her? The thing is, although Will is gorgeous too and perfect in many ways, he has one very obvious 'imperfection' that he cannot hide...

5.0 out of 5 stars the moral of the story is - You get what you need, not what you want., 4 Jun. 2015

I appreciate watching a film where, if they are going to portray a person as disabled, then they use a disabled actor for that role (where the storyline permits it) and they have done that here. It certainly makes the lead character Delicious D (played by Christopher Thornton) more believable as a paraplegic.

Apparently Christopher Thornton and Mark Ruffalo went to acting school together, which is how they ended up co-directing this film.

Some big names in here. Alongside Mark Ruffalo as the priest trying to help the homeless Delicious D off the streets, Juliette Lewis stars as Ariel (druggie band member trying to recruit Delicious D as a turntable-ist) and Orlando Bloom is the selfish, egotistical English lead singer of said band.

The story is basically that Delicious D is homeless and living in his car, with other down and outs. Father ? (cant remember his name!), runs a soup kitchen and is trying to help some of the lost souls using its services. One day Delicious D discovers that he can heal people just by laying his hands on them and Father ? uses his new powers to help bring money in via donations, which he hopes to use to build a new homeless shelter. Frustratingly, Delicious D's powers do not extend to healing himself, which causes him to question why he was given his powers and by whom.

At the same time, Delicious D is trying to get work as a turntable-ist with a band. They basically don't want him (apart from Ariel) until they realise that his healing powers can be used as a gimmick on stage to draw the crowds in.

The film has some further twists, but I won't spoil things for you by telling you what happens.

It's a good, but very strange and sometimes dark film. Well worth the watch if you want something different.

The only thing that peeves me is the fact that they have relegated the main character to the smallest picture on the cover of the DVD, making it look like Orlando Bloom is the main character. He is not! admittedly, disability is not a big mainstream selling point, but the main character IS disabled and his disability is a key part of the storyline, so for goodness sake, represent that accurately!!!

You Rock...I Roll: The Compelling Stories and Songs by a Quadriplegic Musician
Price: £3.01

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting perspective on life..., 7 May 2015

Tony's just your average American guy trying to earn a living by pursuing his passion in life - music.

The fact that he came from a childhood background of a troubled sibling, parental divorce and rough living conditions and then became a quadriplegic at a young age, makes the fact that he is Still your average American guy at the other end of it pretty impressive.

Here's a guy who's not always had it easy in life, but retains his 'glass half full' outlook on things.

He celebrates the things that should be celebrated - good looking women, good music, family ties, doing what you love. He appreciates the fact that he still has a cracking set of shoulders, despite the fact his injury has robbed him of most of his former athletic physique. He still loves women and women still love him. His love of music keeps him performing - singing when he can't play guitar anymore.

He makes you think about what it's possible to achieve if you put your mind to it, without preaching or being 'inspirational'. Like I say, he's just an everyday guy.

But he's an everyday guy with an interesting story to be told. I think you should read it for yourself...

4.0 out of 5 stars A disjointed angel's voice, 23 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lp1 (Audio CD)
These disjointed melodies shouldn't work, but somehow they do - the jarring segments drawn together by FKA Twigs' angelic voice, sometimes a single voice, sometimes recorded as a multiple harmony.

I really wanted to like the album. It was a struggle at first, trying to get my brain to make sense of it, but after a few repetitions, I grew to love it. And love it still. It's not music to dance too, you'd struggle to find a regular beat - but music to chill too...? You bet!

Try it and let your senses be challenged...
