5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece !, 13 Jan. 2015
This review is from: The Wake (Hardcover)
This is one of the finest works I have read in years and if you don't try it you are missing out. It is vivid, sensitive and utterly gripping. The evocation of the Anglo - Saxon world is marvellous. The reader will swiftly get used to the lexicon. Whether it wins prizes or not it will stay with you...

Quite simply the greatest play of the C20th. By turns harrowing and bleak yet also sublime in it's humour this is a work of genius. It will change your life.

I enjoyed this novel immensely. The characters are plausible, well defined and constructed and the narrative coheres in a satisfying way. The 1960's setting adds a welcome textural depth to the narrative which moves along at just the right pace, allowing appropriate time for reflection. It also manages to be, by turns, complex, erudite and witty, yet still entertaining - which is a good trick ! This author is one to watch - I look forward to more !
