4.0 out of 5 stars Expectations achieved, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good collection of brief but well selected films on some of the many ideas, wild and rational.
A useful series of images of many 20th Century visionary concepts.

5.0 out of 5 stars German Degenerates, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good reproduction publication of the initial exhibition in 1936, with bothe origibal German and an English translation, with illustrations of some of the works exhibited, together with extracts from Hitler's speech and other of his statements about what art should be.
A very useful publication for understanding the Nazi attitudes to art.

As expected the catalogue clearly presented a considerable volume of works very well.
The text was , on the whole clear and not too pretentious. Together it was a good publication of the artist's works and ideas.

3.0 out of 5 stars McGregor Dance and interview, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having been an avid follower, on DVD, of McGregor's works I was disappointed in this choreography in relation to earlier works by him. There were not the expected 'new' body movements and excitment of seeing the body presenting new possibilities of movement which I have more clearly enjoyed previously. The interview was similar to, if not the same as previous ones in its disclosures.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but lacking, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The DVD did give a broad idea of the layout and exterior details of the Reichchancellry, as a computer reconstruction.
It did not however give any indication or details of any of the interiors which was very disappointing. Unless one has a good understasnding of verbal German it is again unfortunate that no subtiteling is applied to either the visual or interview presentations. Certainly better than nothing but lacking in real clarity of the subject.

This book, essentially a catalogue for the present exhibition, is a spendid publication. Covering the history of the collection and its various locations. The illustrations of the painting are well printed and very effective as are the descriptions of the works and the general writings in the book. It also presents the history of the house itself, which I think, was not so well done in their llustrations as the double page images are 'split' by the spine and frequently crash though the images in just the wrong part of the rooms they are presenting.
In general, however , a very good and well detailed publication.

5.0 out of 5 stars STYLE - Tudor and Stuart court fashion, 10 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an absolutely superb publication in all ways. One of the most beautiful publications/catalogues I have seen for some time. As well as being very clearly arranged for the various sections dealt with, the illustrations and numerous details of the paintings and actual costumes could not be bettered. Having viewed the exhibition its self, at the Queen's Gallery, I can vouch for the quality and value of the images, in some ways being even better than the actual exhibits themselves. The written content is also clear, concise and enlightening.
Anyone interested in any aspect of fashion, portraiture, period painting, portraiture or other historical area of the period would find delight, I am sure, in this publication. Get a copy - quick!

5.0 out of 5 stars Horror of Horrors, 9 Feb. 2013
Totally, utterly, absolutely brilliant!!! Tim Burton at his very best in all aspects of the film - story line, animation, characterisation, et al. It does'nt need colour, almost better without it, as it certainly is a tribute to the Black and White Horror Movies ( and to my mind a better film in its use of this format than 'The Arist') The jokes and puns are all predictable and set up for the audience, who can see what is coming - but they are even better when they actually happen. The 'gang' members are a real treat for old movie buffs, as are many of the settings and events in the story line which relate to past classics. Spot the early monsters 'reborn' into the horrible kids.
Anyone who has not seen this MUST get a copy to play - again and again!!

As with most of the 'Illuminations' productions this is an excellent presentation of the character, creative manner and works of the artist. Although it deals almost exclusively with Ofili's Venice 2003 British Pavilion exhibition it does include interviews and other works. I would have liked it to have shown more examples of his earlier works and a more detailed presentation of the techniques used in their creation, but it is certainly interesting and well worth the viewing; even for those who do not know his works at all. He comes over as a very charming and approachable person . For those interested in his work his productions for the recent 'Metamorphosis' event at the National Gallery and Covent Garden are well worth viewing on the web (unfortunately there is no DVD available of this event)

Myths, Monsters and Legends
Myths, Monsters and Legends

5.0 out of 5 stars Bobwrinkle, 21 Dec. 2011

What would one expect from Damien, and Rankin, but a visually extra-ordinary production. No sharks in tanks but some sculls, with amazing creations of the Mythic, this is just how Hirst's mind works, brought stunningly to 'life' by the photography of Rankin. If you are intrigued and appreciative of Hirst's work in general, or a fan of films like 'Pan's Labyrinth'etc. this is for you. The breadth of works on his regular theme of life, death and the in-between seems to get wider and deeper, where will he go next? A facinating development which could lead to film or theatre?
For those who do admire Hirst's output remember there is his retrospective at Tate Modern from 4 April 2012.
Well worth the purchase price to get into another's head and its imaginary world.
