5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 11 Sept. 2012
This review is from: Vivaldi: Stabat Mater (Audio CD)
I picked this cd up for about a fiver several years ago for the Stabat Mater which, as another reviewer rightly says, does not disappoint. But the 'filler' pieces are simply sensational. Ensemble 415's attack and articulation provide excellent and exciting partnership to Scholl's (here) wonderful singing. Cessate omai cessate, with its captivating raindrop figure is especially memorable. If I had to pick one cd out of my thousand-odd to rescue from a fire, it might very well be this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous, 22 Jan. 2012

An unexpected treat. Utterly mesmerising singing of delicious music which was, for the most part, totally unknown to me. Cannot recommend highly enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Non-pharmaceutical mogadon, 3 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really want to like Clark's Civilisation but I can't. It is staggeringly boring and Clark is an insufferably pompous old fart.

I know Clark's is a "personal view" and has ranks of defenders, but this person found it to be a highly effective treatment for insomnia. Save your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit over-rated, I'd say, 13 Aug. 2010
I can't help but find these performances a bit vulgar and page-bound. Sure, they play the notes and play them well, but with a certain head-banging belligerence and the music seems to be missing somewhat. I'd go for the Mackerras/SCO/Philharmonia if it's period-style performance you're after. A far more insightful and satisfying set.

2.0 out of 5 stars Grrr, 18 July 2010
I am usually a great admirer of Vengerov: his Brahms, Mendelssohn and especially Shostakovich are all close to first choice. His stab at Sibelius, on the other hand, seems to be all about MV rather that JS. I am afraid I found it downright offensive and it made me think less of a man who is by any measure one of the world's current leading violinists. It's bloody dreadful so don't buy it. If you want the same coupling I would recommend Lin/Salonen which is belter: icy cold, precise, chilling, exciting, a wee bit scary...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 10 Mar. 2008
Not a book for the complete beginner, but if you want to progress in Norwegian (which is a diverse family of dialects), this is the most important dictionary you need. Use English-Norwegian/Norwegian-English dictionaries by all means, but there is nothing on the market which comes close to the Green Book. Indispensable: you won't be able to properly translate without it. The only Norwegian-English dictionary to include both Bokmål and Nynorsk, as well as dialect words. If you're serious about learning Norwegian, you can't go wrong with this. No praise high enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Original Scrabble, 14 Jan. 2008
= Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Scrabble Board Game (Toy)
This might call itself Scrabble Original, but it isn't. The Scrabble sets I played on as a lad all had wee holes in the board and pegs on the tiles so that the game wouldn't be ruined by the slightest knock. Sadly no more. It also comes in a stupidly huge box to make storage unnecessarily awkward. Disappointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too big for a field guide, 5 Nov. 2007
I hate to spoil the love-in, but at 900g (2lb) this new edition is simply too heavy to be a practical field guide. This book is thicker than the Edinburgh telephone directory and consequently is highly unlikely to find its way into my pocket or backpack when I am off out. This is a pity because there the book has many good features; greater brevity would have made it a hands-down winner. As it is, the old edition is a more realistic prospect if you want pictures, Stace if you don't.
