5.0 out of 5 stars Possible the best screen protector available?, 26 May 2015
This is the second Expert Shield Screen protector I have bought and I have no hesitation in recommending them.

The protector is an obviously quality product and is packaged very well. Rather than having to pick at the protective films that protect both sides of the screen protector they have little tabs attached to them which make it easy to peel them away.

The instructions are excellent and if you follow them to the letter you will have a dust-free, air-bubble free screen protector which fits your camera's monitor screen precisely. The screen protector itself is completely clear yet is quite thick and I have confidence in it's protecting qualities.

The Expert Shield Protectors come with a lifetime guarantee so make sure you keep the cardoboard envelope it comes in and your amazon receipt.

Lumen (Captain Martin Bora Mysteries)
Lumen (Captain Martin Bora Mysteries)
by Ben Pastor
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A high quality novel about crimes in Nazi-occupied Poland, 26 May 2015
I am an admirer of books by Philip Kerr, Alan Furst and other writers who set detective or intelligence service novels in the complex territory of Nazi Germany. I had never read anything by Italian writer Ben Pastor until spotting her books as recommended reads on Amazon and decided to try Lumen, the first novel in her Martin Bora series. The book was published in 1999 but only made into publication in English in 2012.

Martin Bora is a young Nazi intelligence official, a captain in the German Army. He has an aristocratic and military background and has high ideals. Much of the interest in the book comes from Bora's gradual realisation that evil is being committed by his Nazi colleagues and that simply working for the regime compromises his high moral standards.

The novel is set in 1941. The Nazi's have invaded Poland and Bora is sent to Cracow where he works for an insufferable senior officer, a committed Nazi with some strange health and hygene idead which is trys to impose on young Bora. Bora is sent to investigate the killing of an Mother Superior at a local nunnery. Mother Kazimierza is noted for her great mystical powers and is reputed to have borned the stigmata (bleeding wounds in her hands corresponding to the wounds Christ received on the cross). An American Priest helps Bora in his investigations, but the two have an uneasy relationship due to their opposing political backgrounds.

Ben Pastors skill as a writer is to create a very believable set of characters and a very good impresssion of what life must have been link in wartime Poland. Nazi atrocities arise in the background testing Bora's moral allegiance while the officer he shares a house with leads him into relationships with theatrical people who tempt him with entirely different moral agendas.

The book is extremely well-written and I found it to be a compelling read. I am pleased to see that all three follow-up novels about Martin Bora are already available in English for me to read and I have already downloaded the next one, Liar Moon (Captain Martin Bora Mysteries), onto my Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't think you would find a better chopping board than this one, 26 May 2015
I can't think you would find a better chopping board than this one. It is thick and feels as though it would be really hard-wearing and most importantly, when you chop something up on it, it doesn't leave knife marks. I have used it for several days now and there are several features I have appreciated which you don't get with a wooden board

1. It's bendy, so you can lift it up with the chopped food on it and pour the contents right into a saucepan
2. It's very easy to wash and you can even put it into a microwave if you want to sterilise it.
3. It seems to cling to your work-surface without slipping about and makes no noise when you put it down.

The measurement scale around all four edges could be useful if you are wanting to chop things to all the same length for presentational purposes.

I don't hang it up on a hook but a hole is provided should you wish to do so.

I have recently been replacing some of our older plastic utensils with silicone versions and I am greatly impressed with the material. It seems to be very hard-wearing, scratch proof, and very easy to clean. We have both wooden and plastic chopping boards and both of them get scratched - no doubt these scratches become a breeding ground for germs. With this silicone chopping board, the absence of scratches surely means that it is mor hygenic? And as I said earlier if you have any doubts about it's cleanliness you can put it into the microwave for a couple of minutes to really make sure.

I was sent this for review by the suppliers but am genuinely very pleased with it and would buy one without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great little camera with huge potential and capability, 18 May 2015
I have had many digital cameras over the last ten years or so and am usually surprised by every one I get as to how much better it is than the one before. My last compact digital was a Canon G12 which like the Lumix DMC-TZ70 has 12 megapixels. However, with only a 4X optical zoom, the Canon lagged far behind the TZ20 which has a startling 30X optical zoom. And whereas other superzoom compacts are virtually unusable when zoomed out to the max owing to general fuzziness and camera shake, I have taken 30X zoom pictures with he TZ70 and they have come out really well. This is due to two reasons

1. The fantastic image stabilisation system which really irons out any jitteriness in your hands
2. The extremely good view-finder which you can anchor against your head as you look through it and hold the camera rock steady.

Beware of super-zooms that don't have a viewfinder - at the higher levels of magnification you will not be able to hold them steady enough to be able to take advantage of zooming in to the max. Although this camera is often compared with the Sony Cybershot DSC-RX100 Digital Camera (20.2MP, 3.6x Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCD which has a larger image sensor and therefore may take better photos in low light, surely the viewfinder on the TZ70 is a clincher for most people?

Another feature of the viewfinder is the diopter adjustment wheel - this lets you focus in on your subject so that you are fully adjusted for any deficiencies in your eye or your glasses. There is also an eye detector sensor, so when you lift the camera to your eye it automatically switches to the viewfinder and turns the screen off. Amazing - and it works really well.

The performance of the camera is very good all round. I took it out with my Nikon SLR and took several pictures on both cameras. I was tempted to think, why do I bother with an SLR? For most of the time, the TZ70 photos are quite as good as the SLR. OK, I choose to use the SLR for some very specialised purposes and love the interchangeable lenses, but for general use, give me a pocketable compact any time - and this TZ70 is as good as any. I had some blown highlights with it admittedly, but it's very quick and easy to fiddle with the exposure compensation setting to reduce the exposure in bright light. Most people wouldn't notice it anyway unless they use the histogram features in Lightroom as I do.

The TZ70 has some fantastic features. One is the ability to take a panoramic photograph by pressing the shutter and turning your body round slowly. None of that merging of separate images you used to have to do before on the computer - it does it all in camera. Also if you like HDR images, the TZ70 can be set to take all three in one go and merge them together in camera. Amazing stuff. There are so many features like this is would be difficult to list them all in one short review here, but explore the manual and you'll soon be experimenting with them all. If you just want to take photographs however, leave it on Intelligent Auto and the camera will detect what sort of image it's looking at and choose the best settings for you.

Only one short manual is inlcuded in the box to get you going. It's worth downloading the full manual or installing it from the disk provided if you want to take full advantage of the camera's features. While you can use this as a simple "travel camera" to snap away while you're on holiday, if you're interested in photography, there's plenty here to keep you occupied and you will be able to take the camera to it's limits - which are pretty broad in my view.

I've enjoyed using the TZ70 immensely and would highly recommend it as a fully proficient compact camera. Definitely worth its stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made my salads really exciting again, 18 May 2015
What an amazing little gadget this is. It has certainly revolutionised salads in our house and we now have beautiful salads with julienne strips and spirals of carrots, cucumber and courgettes.

One very good feature of this device is that it is perfectly safe. You place the end of the vegetable to be prepared on the spiked end piece, then press the vegetable down the cone where the cutters are, twisting as you go. Because of the thick end piece and the two wide finger guards which you hold the spiralize with, your finger are safe on both hands. This feature really marks this product out from other julienne cutters - I have had more than my share of nicks and cuts from devices without these safety features and I will be using this Spiraltastic cutter from now on.

The Spiralizer comes with a ceramic vegetable peeler too so you can take the peel off carrots etc before you put them in the spiralizer. One little tip - if you're preparing cucumber, just slice away a few strips of peel and you will end up with nicely alternating green and white sections on the spirals you produce. Also, I have never thought of eating uncooked courgettes before but they come out really well as thin spirals and are quite delicious.

You also get a little bottle brush in the box too which makes short work of getting out any remnants of vegetable once you have finished spiralizing.

The product feels quality made from substantial plastic and metal. It is in no way flimsy and should give years of useful service.

It's all packed in a substantial and attractive box so would make a great gift for a friend or relative. Altogether this is a great product which I am very happy to have tried.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value tablet for children - also usable by parents!, 18 May 2015
Length:: 2:34 Mins

This is a great value tablet with customisation for children. The rubbery case makes it difficult to break and it's nice and easy to use. Maybe you're fed up with losing your iPAD or NEXUS to your children - well, the answer could be to buy them one of these so they don't pester you any longer.

Hitler's Last Day: Minute by Minute

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read showing how the world lived through this most important of days, 15 May 2015
When I first saw this book I thought, Oh no, not another book about the bunker and Hitler's suicide. However, a closer look showed that it was really covering events all across Europe on the day Hitler died, 30 April 1945. I bought it and have to say, once I started to read it I could hardly put it down.

It was a great idea to follow the events of that day minute by minute and although we do read much about what was going on in the bunker, those events are set in the context of many other events such as the advance of allied troops across Italy and Germany, the lives of ordinary citizens in Berlin and other cities, the liberation of Holland, and the opening up of concentration camps. These are real eye-witness accounts and have a directness which really brings them to life as people like you and me find themselves in impossible situations and find depths of bravery and persistence in themselves that they never knew they had.

We meet many famous names in the book. Youg Dutch girl Edda van Heemstra (later Audrey Hepburn) struggles with her family to find enough food to feed herself. Journalist George Orwell is billeted with a German family in Stuttgart. John F Kennedy attends a conference which will decide the shape of the future United Nations. Alan Whicker travels through Italy ahead of the advancing Allied troops.

Throughout the book I relished the downfall of so many Nazi's - Himmler, Bormann, Goering. It is a delight to read of their dawning realisation that all was lost. And British traitor William Joyce, "Lord Haw Haw" comes to an ignominious end, wandering through a small Danish village and intercepted by two British soldiers and taken back to Wandsworth Prison. We keep returning to the bunker of course and see the horrors of the unfolding day, with some plotting their escape into the war-ravaged world above while others confirm their allegiance to their increasingly sick leader as he realises that all is lost.

We meet plenty of ordinary citizens across Europe too and get a real sense of the impact of liberation - joy for those in Holland, relief for British families as their boys come home, and freedom across the world as the Nazi and Japanese powers finally fall. This book really brings home the fact that these were ordinary people, catapulted into extraordinary circumstances. We readers would have found ourselves in the thick of it a had we been born a mere 70 years earlier and one of Jonathan Mayo's achievements is to generate a sense in his readers that it could have been us.

5.0 out of 5 stars A robust speaker with good sound for use indoors or out, 13 May 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have tried quite a few bluetooth speakers and this Solememo one is definitely a very good option for anyone who's looking for a speaker with better sound quality than most and with features like splash-proof, shock-proof and dust-proof which make is suitable for use not only in the home but out and about. It would be ideal to take on holiday with you, or to use in a park or garden, but it is still a good looking speaker which is very suitable for use around the home.

It arrived nicely packed in a smart cardboard packaging and when I took it out I was impressed by its smart design. I plugged it in to my laptop using the USB cable supplied and left it for a couple of hours. When I turned it on (hold the power button down for three seconds), it gave an audible signal and was ready for pairing. My Android tablet found it straightaway (it comes up as SE90 on the list of devices) and so I fired up my music playing app and was immediately impressed by the sound. The volume can be controlled form the speaker itself or from the paired device and when I turned the tablet's volume up and the speaker volume up to full, there was no distortion and the sounds was perfectly loud enough for general listening of speech and music. There is enough bass response music tracks and when I turned to speech radio the voices came out clearly and sounded very natural.

The construction is plastic but it seems very robust. I like that there is a tripod socket underneath the speaker and if you intended to use it on a camping trip is might be nice to buy one of those little mini-tripods so you can raise the speaker above the grounds a few inches.

I didn't try all the communication functions of the speaker but I have no doubt that it works well as a hands-free device should you need it. The manual is printed in very small type but to be honest you don't really need it anyway as it's all very intuitive in operation.

This is a very useful speaker and is ideal for carrying around the house and garden. It is light in weight and would pack easily to take away with you on your travels. Good value too and I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very stylish casual shirt - well-made and great value, 13 May 2015
I am very impressed with this Charles Wilson check cotton casual shirt.

The fit is excellent - I am a "large" size, and this shirt is generously cut, giving plenty of length in the body and arms. It is not too big around the chest and would fit fine on anyone of normal build. The fabric feels high quality - not too thin, and I think the shirt would wear well. Although it is cotton, it does not have a "crumpled" look but has a good finish to it.

The collar and cuffs are well constructed and don't deteriorate with washing. The collar has a contrasting lining which shows when the shirt is worn open-necked - a nice touch which adds to the overall feel of quality. The cuffs are double buttoned which also makes the shirt feel a cut above others of this price point. All the seams are strongly finished and the shirt should last well.

The most amazing thing about the shirt is the price on Amazon. I would certainly expect to see this shirt for sale at the recommended price in any High Street shop and to see such a discount here makes it fantastic value. You really won't be disappointed with the shirt and you will wonder why you pay more for shirts on the High Street.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best peeler I've ever used., 1 May 2015
When I opened the box this came in I was immediately impressed by the quality of this implement. It is very well made and feels solid in the hand.

One one side it is a vegetable peeler and on the other side it is a julienne peeler. The peeler is extremely effective - the blades are so sharp it makes light work of peeling any vegetable or fruit. The peeling blade is double so you pull or push it either way.

The julienne blades are brilliant and cuts very fine strips of vegetable for use in salads. The matchstick-sized strips of carrot or courgette are perfect for coleslaw, salads and stir-fries. After years of cutting julienne strips with a knife this is a revelation! You could also use it for finely shredding citrus peel when making marmalade.

The two little semi-circular blades on the side are useful for getting a black bit out of a vegetable, or for cutting into citrus skin so you can peel an orange more easily. Look carefully at the product description photographs to get the idea.

What makes this implement stand out for me is the sharpness of the blades and the sheer ease of use. It is a quality product and well-worth the money.
