Charles Wilson Clothing Jersey Cotton Striped Polo Shirt

5.0 out of 5 stars I am very pleased with this Charles Wilson polo shirt in jersey cotton, 29 Mar. 2015
I am very pleased with this Charles Wilson polo shirt in jersey cotton. It is ideal summer-wear and the striped fabric make it ideal for any outdoor activity - a bit different to the usual plain colours which many people wear.

The shirt is fantastic value at the price offered on Amazon. The blue colour I chose looks very nice and the jersey material gives it a soft feel and makes it very comfortable to wear. It is 100% cotton and is fully machine-washable.

I ordered it in large and the size is just what I would expect - the fit is quite generous and like other Charles Wilson garments, the manufacturers have not skimped on the materials.

A fine product which would be a great gift for any man or just perfect for your own summer wear.

This Charles Wilson "contrast" polo is a classic polo shirt made from 100% cotton with a contrasting white "placket" underneath the buttons.

This polo shirt is fantastic value at the price offered on Amazon. The balck colour I chose looks very smart and is ideal for wearing on it's own or under a jackeet or jumper on a cooler day. The pique material is classic polo-shirt fabric and has the benefit of being quite airy on a hot day. I am pleased to see that it is machine-washable.

I ordered it in large and the size is just what I would expect - the fit is generous and shows that Charles Wilson have not skimped on the materials.

A fine product which would be a great gift for any man or just perfect for your own summer wear.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quality product and fantastic value, 29 Mar. 2015
This Charles Wilson "Heritage Range" polo is a classic polo shirt made from 100% cotton.

This polo shirt is fantastic value at the price offered on Amazon. The navy ("sovreign blue") colour I chose looks very smart and the pique finish allows air to pass through the material on hot days. Ideal for summer-wear.

I ordered it in large and the size is just what I would expect - the fit is actually quite generous and allows for some shrinkage due to washing over time. I usually find large size from the major chain stores fits me fine and this one is the same, so Charles Wilson have obviously not skimped on the materials.

A fine product which would be a great gift for any man or just perfect for your own summer wear.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well-written novel with bags of local atmosphere, 29 Mar. 2015
The loss of a child is every parents nightmare. When 12 year old Heather disappears while on holiday with her friend's parents, her mother is launched on a grief stained path which will break up her marriage and leave her seeing ghosts of her dead child for years to come. When she remarries and daughter number two goes missing the burden seems unbearable.

Detective Inspector Will Grayson takes on the case together with his sidekick Helen Walker, a characterful couple who's aciding relationship gives some welcome inter-colleague banterand mickey taking to this rather elongated tale.

Will have a wife and children of his own, and before long the unthinkable seems to happen - whoever is behind the abduction of daughter number two has Will's address and is taking an interest his his children too.

There is a lot to like about this novel. It is well-written and the local colour and settings add much to the plot. The flat lands of rural Cambridgeshire are an ideal setting for the bleak, lonely lives of some of the main suspects and provide many remote places where bad things can happen.

The book could have been edited down by a hundred pages or so, but it's well-written enough that you get carried along by the gradual build-up of suspense.

I liked it and it's well worth my four stars - if Amazong allowed half stars it might have got four and a half from me. Certainly as good or better than most of the Scandi-crime novels I've been reading lately.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb product in every way - with a totally comprehensive accessory set, 29 Mar. 2015
Length:: 3:10 Mins

I have had small cameras before but never seen one with the capability of the Dazzne P2. I will begin this review by writing first of all about the camera itself which produces excellent video in a wide range of formats.

The camera has three buttons to operate it, power, shutter and mode and once you get the hang of the menu system is easy to operate. Within no time I was taking still photographs with it, and then I set the video to maximum resolution, wide angle and 30 frames per second and set it up in the car windscreen (using the transparent camera case and the suction cap attachment provided). I was delighted to find that the waterproof transparent case has buttons which fit over the camera buttons so the camer is fully operable while in the case.

My first attempt at using the camera as a dash-cam was completely successful. I brought the camera indoors and connected it up to the computer with the cable provided and was quite astonished at the quality of the video. The wide-angle setting ensures that the whole of the windscreen was covered and the images quality is little short of amazing and definitely comes into the high definition category. Movements are smooth and a visitors to the house said that it was just like being in the car.

The manual covers all the functions but as with all cameras you need to fiddle about to understand the full range of the menus. There are timers for every situation such as delayed shutter release and a function to break your video into smaller three minute files as it records.

The accessory pack is quite incredible and I can't see you would need anything other than what is included.

I won't list everything in the box - it would take too long, but highlights for me are:

- TWO batteries with charger - each of which lasts for a four hour charge so you can definitely go out for a day in the condifence that you won't run out of power. The charger itself is very clever and charges the two batteries together or singly and takes account of the power output of your USB socket while doing so.

- a 32GB San Disc micro-HD card - I think Nikon and Canon could learn some lessons here rather than giving you just enough on their cards for half a dozen still photographs. Dazzne deserve full credit for giving away a massive memory card with this camera

- waterproof clear case for the camera with full operability while the camera is in the case.

- Enough mounting accessories to cover every possible situation. Suction mount for a windscreen, bike handlebar mount, chest mount so could video your walk, stick on mounts with rotating mechanism (for helmets etc) - the list goes on. And all included in the price!

I commend Dazzne for giving you everything you could possible need with this camerea. Not only is it an excellent camera but the accessory kit bundled with it makes it the best possible buy in action cameras.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb heat protection, smart, practical and durable, 29 Mar. 2015
Silicone is the new material for kitchen accessories; baking trays, cup-cake moulds - and now oven gloves. Our old oven-gloves always look tired and work with burnt out bits on them, grease stains etc, so when I saw these I had to have a pair.

I have had them a few days now and I am very impressed with them. At first I wondered whether silicone could provide the heat protection of an old-style padded overn glove, but I have found that I can pick up the hottest dish from the oven, carry it across the kitchen, and be completely protected from burns.

The grip is very good - the surface of the gloves seems to latch on to shiny pots and pans without any sense of slippage. If you take a scalding hot casserole dish from the oven you can be sure it won't slip out of your hands because the silicone has a rubbery feel which grips really well.

There is an additional safety benefit from using silicone oven gloves - boiling water doesn't soak through them so should have any spillages while handling kitchen equipment you are completely safe from scalding should boiling liquid get on the gloves. I think this is a major plus for these gloves.

The gloves can be hand-washed in the sink (don't put them in a washing machine) and will dry in no time, particularly if you don't wet the inner lining. Gravy stains just wipe off so they always look new.

You get a free gift with these gloves - a silicone trivet hot pad which is just perfect for putting next to your cooker to place a hot pan on and avoid damaging your surface. It has fantastic grip and doubles up as a jar opener.

I really think this is a case where new materials offer considerable advantages over traditional textiles and in the case of these gloves, the benefits are clear - better heat protection, wipe-clean, non-slip texture, no risk of scalding from hot liquids. It would be hard to imagine anyone wanting to go back to old-style fabric oven-gloves after using these and I highly recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylish and slim, a quality keyboard, 25 Mar. 2015
I have been looking for a bluetooth keyboard and this one is exactly what I wanted. Stylish and slim but with responsive keys and all the usual functions you would expect.

The instructions are very easy to follow and in any case, it's fairly obvious what you have to do to get the device operating (put the batteries in and turn on the power and press the connect button). The keyboard paired with my Google Nexus tablet within a few seconds and I just had to type in a four digit pin number which popped up on my tablet to complete the connection. I assume this last stage is necessary in case you are working where other bluetooth keyboards might be operating such as a café or library and I welcome the security.

I am a touch-typist and I found that I adapted to the keyboard within a few minutes. The keys give a satisfying, soft click without being noisy.

The device is operated by two AA batteries (not supplied) and so far battery life seems fine. There is a low battery indicator at the top of the keyboard. Underneath the keyboard there is an on/off switch so you can save batteries when not in use.

This keyboard feels like a quality piece of kit and is fantastic value. I really can't see why anyone would want to spend more money on a keyboard when this one is so good.

The Caveman (William Wisting Mystery 4)
The Caveman (William Wisting Mystery 4)
by Jorn Lier Horst
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars A quality crime-novel despite a slowish start, 22 Mar. 2015
I have enjoyed Jorn Lier Horst's previous books about Detective William Wisting and came to this one with high expectations.

An elderly neighbour of Wisting is found dead in his armchair and his journalist daughter Line gets the opportunity to write an in-depth piece on the problems of loneliness and elderly isolation based on the neighbour's life.

William is still living on his own and Line decides to come back home for a few days to work in the peace and quiet of William's house. The house is getting neglected however and one of the first things she has to do is to clean the layers of dust off all the surfaces.

William is completely involved with his work, particularly when another body is found deep in the forest. The body is decomposed and very difficult to identify but soon it becomes apparent that the case bears close links to an American fugitive, suspected of being a serial killer, who may have come to Norway.

FBI officers come across from the USA to help with the investigation and before long the case has escalated in seriousness and the book suddenly takes off (despite what I found to be a rather slow start).

Meanwhile, journalist Line is finding far more to the case of a deceased neighbour than she expected and there are some beautifully creepy scenes as she gains admission to the dead-man's house and even explores a long-forgotten cellar.

This is quite a long book (352 pages) and in all honesty, it doesn't really take off until about half way through. For those who love Lier Horst's careful writing, with tons of Norwegian atmosphere and characterisation, this doesn't really matter. It is still a great read and I was tempted to give if five stars but decided on four because of the slow start. Perservere with it though and you will be rewarded by a fine example of Scandi-crime and a must-read for anyone who has read earlier novels in the series.

Sketch!: The Non-Artist's Guide to Inspiration, Technique, and Drawing Daily Life
Sketch!: The Non-Artist's Guide to Inspiration, Technique, and Drawing Daily Life
by France Belleville-Van Stone
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.09

5.0 out of 5 stars A very inspirational book about drawing, 22 Mar. 2015
I own many art books and use most of them for the inspiration provided by the illustrations rather than the text itself. This book has lots of drawings in it and I have found it very useful to provide me with new ideas for sketching. The text is also useful and the author gives some intersting thoughts on the process of drawing.

France Belleville-Van Stone seems to have quite a haphazard approach to drawing being a very "inspirational" artist, going where the fancy takes her. This book is definitely not a "how to" guide with lots of worked examples. The message seems to be "get your pencil out and draw" - whether that's on the back of a restaurant bill, on a cheap pad of paper or on very costly Stillman and Birn artists journal.

The author is of course quite a gifted artist, but like her, I am of the opinion that the thing that turns you into a good drawer/painter etc, is practice. Too many people say they can't draw, but if they just have a go and then keep coming back every day, eventually they will be able to produce some good work. This book will help you in this process.

The trouble with buying a lot of art books is that every writer seems obliged to put a chapter in about materials. This can get very repetetive and most writers are far too definite about what pens/paints/paper you should use. Although France Belleville-Van Stone has a chapter on materials it is more of a discussion than a prescription and has some useful ideas in it.

I thought the chapter on using tablets (iPAD) etc was useful although with over half of all tablets now being Android I was disappointed that none of the apps she recommends are available to most readers! There are good apps for Android and I think the writer missed a trick here. However, the tips are still useful whatever app you use.

France Belleville-Van Stone has a website (quite easy to find by searching on her name) and this contains some videos of how she does her work.

Most of all I like the drawings in this book and it is a resource I will turn to over and over again during the next year.

The book was quite rightly listed in Huffington Post's Best Art Books of 2014.
