Martial Arts Basics Ju-Jitsu
Martial Arts Basics Ju-Jitsu
by Kevin Pell
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for Japanese ju-jitsu/jujutsu, 28 May 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent introduction to Japanese jujutsu including a short background on the art, training expectations before moving onto breakfalls, stances, defences against holds, strikes, ground fighting, and defences against weapons. The descriptions and illustrations for the techniques and how to do them are really first rate and if you have some previous martial art experience and a training partner you can definitely incorporate these techniques into your training. A seriously good book with excellent Japanese jujutsu self defence techniques. Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE book on The Few, 19 Sept. 2015
I have the previous edition of this for which I previously wrote a review here at Amazon UK, and which I gave 5 stars. This latest edition is a third larger and contains yet more information on aircrew and photos for those whose entries did not have one previously. The scope, scale and research of Mr Wynn's book cannot be overstated. This is a phenomenal and monumental work and a wonderful and fitting tribute to the men who turned Britain's Darkest Hour into her Finest. Quite simply the best book on The Few there is.

RAF Fighter Command Pilot: The Western Front 1939-42 (Warrior)
RAF Fighter Command Pilot: The Western Front 1939-42 (Warrior)
by Mark Barber
Edition: Paperback
Price: £11.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on the RAF pilot in Fighter Command, 11 Sept. 2015
An excellent and succinct look at the RAF Fighter Command pilot in the first half of the war. Mr Barber has done a superb job, and covers: the history; training; uniform and flying kit; aircraft flown; ethos; tactics; etc. All in all it gives a wonderful understanding of what it was like to be a pilot in Fighter Command at that time. It contains many photos and several full colour illustrations showing scenes of life on the ground and in the air, as well as flying kit and equipment. Very worthwhile and recommended.

The Legend of Beau Baxter
The Legend of Beau Baxter
Price: £11.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Rugby and roguishness in the 1920s, 11 Sept. 2015
Fun and light-hearted novel based around the legendary All Blacks team of 1924, "The Invincibles" who toured Britain, Ireland and France. The story is a little like Flashman in a rugby setting with the lead protagonist, Beau Baxter a kind of loveable cad and rogue. Lots of shenanigans, sex, and the odd bit of rugby. Not a bad way to wile away a rainy weekend for rugby fans and those who enjoy a historical novel with a thick comedic vein.

MiG Alley: Air to Air Combat over Korea - Aircraft Specials series (6020)
MiG Alley: Air to Air Combat over Korea - Aircraft Specials series (6020)
by Larry Davis
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful photos but showing its age, 21 May 2015
Originally published in 1978, this title's worth is in its many and varied photos of the air war over Korea. It has a succinct text dominated by very good pilot accounts recounting actions against the enemy. Overall it's a worthwhile title to own for anyone interested in the air war over Korea for the photographs alone, but showing its age, the profiles of MiG-15s included in the illustrations are incorrect in terms of their markings. Not a bad book on the subject but not the best starting point for those new to the subject.

MiG Alley: Sabres vs MiGs Over Korea
MiG Alley: Sabres vs MiGs Over Korea
by W.E. Thompson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential, 9 May 2015
This is simply essential for anyone interested in the epic tussle between the F-86 Sabre and the MiG-15 which took place over "MiG Alley" during the Korean War. Full of firsthand accounts of combat and absolutely chock-a-block full of photographs (the vast majority in colour) this is the definitive account of the fighter air war over Korea in the words of the men who fought it. Also included are records of individual F-86s that served in Korea, F-86 victories and losses and excellent comparisons between the F-86 and MiG-15 variants.

Overall a musthave for those interested in the subject and should be bought for the combat accounts alone. I'd rate it more than 5 stars if I could!

Gods of Tin: The Flying Years
Gods of Tin: The Flying Years
by James Salter
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars The best writings on flight, 7 May 2015
A spellbinding collection of James Salter's writing about flying, drawn from: his first and second novels, "The Hunters" and "The Arm and the Flesh" (later "Cassada"); his memoir, "Burning the Days"; and a previously unpublished journal that he kept whilst a fighter pilot with the USAF's 335th Fighter Interceptor Squadron during the Korean War. Salter's writing is beautiful, he is the most amazing wordsmith, he can make the words dance on the page and he conjures the feeling and emotions of flight like no other writer I am just grateful that I was able to track down a signed copy of this brilliant book.

Thermopylae 480 BC: Last stand of the 300: Leonidas' Last Stand (Campaign)
Thermopylae 480 BC: Last stand of the 300: Leonidas' Last Stand (Campaign)
by Nic Fields
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent "first stop" for the Battle of Thermopylae, 26 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a terrific concise look at the famous Battle of Thermopylae. It contains background information on the combatants and the situation which led to the battle, as well as the battle itself. As with many Osprey titles this is filled with photographs of archaeological pieces, illustrations and maps which perfectly accompany and reinforce the text. This is an excellent book on this most famous of battles and would be a perfect introduction for any reader to the Battle of Thermopylae.

Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War (Aircraft of the Aces)
Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War (Aircraft of the Aces)
by Leonid Krylov
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars The most groundbreaking title of the Aircraft of the Aces Series, 23 Aug. 2014
Osprey has released many titles in its popular Aircraft of the Aces Series over the years and most function as excellent summations of already existing research. However with "Soviet MiG-15 Aces of the Korean War" Osprey have released a book which is truly groundbreaking on its subject. Whilst the UN and especially US contributions to the air war over Korea have been widely and comprehensively covered, little has been written specifically about the communist side aside from a handful of titles. Krylov and Tepsurkaev's book is quite simply a wonderful and enlightening expose of the Soviet units and pilots who flew the MiG-15 over MiG Alley during the conflict. Full of photos which have never been seen before, this book also contains a very large number of colour side profiles of the Soviet pilots' mounts which will be invaluable to scale aircraft modellers. The text is excellent and demonstrates the enormous amount of research that the authors undertook. I am a great fan of the Aircraft of the Aces Series but this addition is by far the most innovative and novel of the entire series - it lifts the cover on a subject which has been very little written about and provides new information like no other title of the series has to date. Very, very highly recommended.
