Mark Landler's byline in the New York Times is always followed by articles that are insightful and well written. His book on the relationship between Clinton and Obama in the foreign policy of the US is no exception. He has drawn together the threads of the last decade to weave a rich tapestry that demonstrates how their differing world views lead to both successes and failures in the Obama years. Landler's access to Clinton during her years as Secretary of State helps to humanise a politician who often seems remote and inscrutable. It remains unclear how history will judge Obama's attempts to rethink America's place in the world but Landler has helped clarify the thinking behind many of Obama's action so that they appear cohesive in a way they have not been day to day. An important book at this intersection of the American Experiment.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dire, 9 Jan. 2016
Absolutely dire. Maybe I am missing something and this is a YA book. The dialog and poor plotting would certainly seem to indicate that. I have nothing against reading the occasional YA book but I like to know that is what I am doing. This was just so predictable and one dimensional.

More importantly, the historical inaccuracies are rampant. I realise that the author isn't a historian but there are basic facts that could have been checked. There are far better books, sources and stories to learn about the war in Europe. Or if you just want some fun, go watch "A Bridge Too Far"

There are few books I read in high school that i remember as clearly as this one. I was surprised how little I had forgotten. It lacks the rich web of language from Wharton's other books so doesn't draw you in as completely. However, the sparsity is in keeping with the barrenness of the lives it describes. I'm not sure you can read this book any time but in the depths of winter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost interesting, 8 Feb. 2015

This review is from: ELEPHANT MOON (Kindle Edition)
On the plus side, this book lead me to go research more about the elephant rescues of the refugees from the fall of Burma. There was some terrific footage available. The book starts well with rich portraits and the beginnings of good characters. Then the whole thing sort of unravels - it borrows plot devices form other books like the English Patient and the ending feels like the writer didn't know how to conclude so he just wrapped it all up and called it finished. Disappointing after a good start.

1.0 out of 5 stars I hated everything about this book, 25 Jan. 2015

I hated everything about this book. The characters were repugnant. The writing was choppy. The story was vile. No redeeming points at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull and in need of a good editor, 17 Jun. 2014
This review is from: The Goldfinch (Paperback)
This book could have lost 300 pages and still told its story. It would have been better told from a series of viewpoints to help a few of the cardboard cut out characters come to life. The entire Los Vegas section should have just been a pointer to Less Then Zero. I was promised a Wilkie Collins-esque layered mystery. The only mystery is why this book is on the best seller list.

I had never thought about what happened to those left behind at Dunkirk. This book deserves attention as it tells "the rest of the story" behind the Miracle at Dunkirk.
