5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this... no seriously, add it to your cart right now, it's glorious!, 17 April 2016

Just realised i never reviewed this... why? because i have been constantly replaying this game since january...

and true, i occasionally get annoyed by repeating the same collection sidequest for the *checks* twelfth time...but then one of the companions makes a quip i haven't heard yet and i'm genuinely laughing... i can't give a gameplay review really, i'm not hardcore, all i can say is that this is one of the most witty fantasy projects i've come across outside of terry pratchett...

the storyline is strong! the characters are wonderfully fleshed but also somewhat projectable...

and the romance subplots...oh the romance subplots...addictive, my friends! addictive! i warn you!

i bought this for two reasons, one to stop me playing assassins' creed syndicate too quickly (ahem...still haven't finished it...replayed shipping my inquisitor with cullen three times, but have i completed AC? no...)... two, because i missed skyrim...

i don't miss skyrim anymore...while the lack of pure open world was at first frustrating, and the loot system wasn't as logical and real world and...well, is a bit trite, the writing and character aspects of this game faaaaaaaar outway that... and it's pretty! while there are a couple of rainy areas/levels, you also get bright sunshine, sandscapes, caves that are so well rendered one set off my claustrophobia and gave me a real life panic attack (seriously, eff you, crestwood)...

the soundtrack is excellent, both the score and the folksy bard's song's album which...i bought during my second playthrough...

this is an absorbing, immersing game! i cannot praise it enough! i made my best friend, a fellow writer, watch through half the romance plots just so i could show her how annoyed i was that i hadn't written some of the lines first!

the customisation is excellent too! no body type changing, but the detail on the faces is incredible! though my darren keefe did come out a tad buzz lightyear ish...but i know what i did wrong! next time...well, next time i do a bloke i want to do an *wanders off plotting what to do after she's finished her simultaneous qunari rogue and human mage characters*

i'm considering tattoos, people! and i never even played the other games!

5.0 out of 5 stars never, ever, ever, judge an author by her book covers..., 12 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
it's an old saying, to never judge a book by its cover...

yes, we all know that regency romances are the worst culprits but ladies, and any gents out there who are secure in their masculinity, just because the dresses on the covers are painfully, woefully inaccurate to the time period, do not let any prejudice stir you away from these wonderful, beautiful, heartwarming, soulsaving books!

as ever, this will serve as a review of the series so far...there are eight so far... and the goddess who creates them does not look like stopping, and has other series on the go! you are never going to sigh to your friends "oh i like it, i just wish she'd written about so and so...she mentioned him but has no plans to write a book for him..." with Milady Caldwell, my dears, one just has to wait...

The Love of a Duke series is wonderful! usually my favourite of the series is whichever one i've just finished reading, so i can't help there, but it's the sort of series where everyone can passionately defend their own favourite! i've reread this one a LOT because it's the first and i like to read them all in a row because too much chocolate makes you sick, too much steak makes you sweat, but too much regency romance just makes you happy and hopeful and able to deal with...dun dun dun... Reality...

Christi Caldwell's style is light, almost entirely free from americanisms, though not always editing typos... she has made me cry many, many times, but she never leaves me depressed or unsatisfied (fill in your own jokes here)... while her style is consistent, she's not one of those that repeats the same phrase over and over, how she manages to stay as fresh as she does given how much she writes i could not tell you! the woman is a marvel! her heroines...well, she's not one to be pegged to one stereotype! the series has something for all! her men can be brooding or light hearted, sweet or austere...but they are always well rounded...she writes men like someone who actually knows one...

the ahem intimate scenes too are neither pornographic or leave you twisting your neck trying to work out how the hell he can reach that from that angle...

but to return to my point at the start, despite the daft dresses and hair on the cover models, this is a lady who has done her research! she has a knack for detail, she has obviously found a tonne of facts out and worked them in without clunk! this is not some lass who read georgette heyer and austen and said "oh, i can do this!" she has worked, and it shows! it reaps whole fields of benefits because history snobs like me can read it without going "oh no no, dearie me, no!"

if you like consistency and variety, if you like to feel good when you finish even if you were heartbroken a couple of chapters ago... read this series and her other books! she is without a doubt my favourite author at present! of any genre! and yes, that includes almighty heyer, who i have read all my life and still love, lest ye think it's blasphemy i speak...

but caldwell? if heyer is the suitable colonel brandon type...caldwell is the rogue with a wink... and two glasses of champagne!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best thing about shana galen's books is the characters, 12 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Lord and Lady Spy (Kindle Edition)
the best thing about shana galen's books is the characters, then the writing, then the referential humour...

one of the other other other best her titles... i am SO glad this one was named as it was... i saw it in a second hand bookshop in lancaster, bought it for the title thinking it would be one of those Sword of the Highlander ones that i would mock with my friends mercilessly and then pass on to another charity shop... it's fastpaced, it's daring, it's fun, and it's gloriously, wonderfully, beautifully silly! shana galen KNOWS that you have to suspend disbelief, but honey, have you ever been to the opera? seen a couple of shakespeares? if the count in that awful sequel The Marriage of Figaro can fail to recognise his wife...well... i don't want to spoiler...

of the series, Love and Let Spy is my least favourite, because i swear she was playing a drinking game with the references, but that is still a splendid, wonderful book and a class above a huge amount of the dross we accept as regency romance...

and even if the characters weren't urgently, fervently wonderful and readable and relateable, even if her humour and melodrama and pace are not played like some sort of musical arrangement conducted by the best of maestroes...maestri? anyway... my point is... I HAVE TO KEEP READING BECAUSE OMG I NEED TO KNOW HOW ***** GETS CAUGHT! i need to know the eeeeeeeend... and yes, it helps that she keeps dropping people in who get their own books... i do not envy her the herculean task of the last book of the series, which i assume to be some sort of Avengers Assemble mass crossover...

but yes... this one is probably my fave... oh, actually the second one... although the phantom of the opera inspired Blue book was amazing too...

gargh! too hard! just read them, and decide yourself!

see what i did there?

5.0 out of 5 stars let this review stand for the series!, 12 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)

i read the whole series in less than two days because as soon as i finished one, i bought the next! well played, kindle app, well played! from her witty titles to her story recrafting, shana galen is wonderful! i definitely recommend this author if you like referential humour, actual impediments to the happy ending rather than austen like misunderstandings alone, and losing yourself in marvellous storytelling!

with assassins creed syndicate out at the moment, this is like a precursor, and the gleeful way Galen uses street cant is utterly adorable! accurate, but also adorable!

the pace is breakneck at times, though she OCCASIONALLY gives you time to breathe! the series knits together and each time i started a new one i squealed girlishly once both protagonists were revealed. in both the sequels i was ecstatic that she was telling the story she was! galen is a magistrix when it comes to setting her hooks! and genuinely good at creating ominous villains... her atmosphere is impeccable, her social awareness harrowing without being stale or making enjoyment impossible...

the woman is this series! love it, love it, thank you and good night!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, 12 Mar. 2016

Other review is bulls***!

Oh, pardon my gaucheness, ladies! it is utter, utter nonsense! now, i am not denying that this is not as good as the covent garden cubs books which i read this week, along with the two of her lord and lady spy series i hadn't got can tell there's a lack of polish to the writing here and there, and a couple of americanisms that she, christi caldwell (read all her books) and courtney milan (all but one) occasionally slip into... honestly, ladies, it's "could not care less" and really? mommy? *shudders elegantly*

but is it worse than most of the claptrap that gets published in the second most popular genre?'s better!

shana galen has this incredible way of taking inspiration from old stories and using the inspiration with a nod and a wink that puts you in on the joke, and then weaves it into a wonderful, breathtaking story that leaves one weeping in the last ten per cent, rereading avidly, and desperately poking our kindles trying to get the next book to download faster... she uses the harsher aspects of female life (this one has severe abuse in it) without taking away from the romance, the enjoyment and the entertainment! i have depression, i can't bear the overly melodramatic ones that use rape and pillage as a means of course... shana galen may allow the darker elements to enter the narrative, but it's always dealt with realistically and without shock factor...that's an inelegant turn of phrase on my part, sorry, it's nearly two am and i'm reviewing out of pique at someone else's clearly inaccurate review...

you know when someone says they just don't like chocolate...

someone just gave one star to, if not a torinese praline, at the very least a belgian truffle...

the only reason this doesn't get five stars is that tomorrow i am going to go through and review her other books with five stars...or maybe now...i am rather piqued...

i don't want to give away the plot, i will just say that it's sort of taming of the shrew and sort of cinderella and all kinds of wonderful! this may not be ms galen's best, but that just tells you how good the others are, because this is marvellous!

My one was too small for the passport...really tried shoving it in but stuck a good couple of milimetres above the moulded "gel" casing, which is actually pretty dark hard!

really good customer service, they were willing to refund if i posted it but at seven quid, i wrote it off to poor judgement in buying the cheap option... would recommend the company, but not this model...

5.0 out of 5 stars perfection in romance form!, 21 July 2015

The only problem with Christi Caldwell is that i cannot choose a favourite! my favourite is always the one i am reading/rereading! this is where i started and i really recommend it as a starting point! don't be fooled by the floofy dresses on her covers, she is a marvellous writer! If you like your romances with the heart twisting misunderstandings, realistic responses, and a real understanding of the era without dry recitation of events...

just, read her... her storytelling is marvellous, her characters are glorious, and i've not read a single one i didn't devour!
