When We Were Miners
When We Were Miners
Price: £2.76

3.0 out of 5 stars The 1984 miner's strike from a Union point of view., 23 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Far too heavily written by the NUM point of view with a lot of name dropping. Virtually nothing about the effect of the strike on the ordinary miners or their families. A book like this should have said more about them. but they seem to have been almost totally ignored. Did not live up to it's title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite good, 24 April 2014

A very cursory view of some of the tales collected by Victorian writers in the county, inded we all need sources. Just seemed very cobbled together.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so bloody, 24 April 2014

This appears to be a quickly put together book of bits and pieces well enough known in Shrewsbury. By the way her statement to the effect that Flight Lieutenant Eric Lock's whereabouts is not known. She was obviously using the booklet published in 1942 ' The Story of a Brave Shropshire Airman'. One of his squadron pilot's says that against the rules he took a short cut across Boulogne harbour, was coned and shot down.

A few good poems, as I understand them, but a large number failed to get me enthused> as a First World War poet I had expected more poems about the war but all the time his head appeared to be elsewhere. Not one of our greatest.

3.0 out of 5 stars Horrifying, 12 Jan. 2014

As a book, rather too short but what there is of it does mirror the feelings of a Christian society's attitude towards people less fortunate than themselves. Are these days returning?.

3.0 out of 5 stars compelling, 12 Jan. 2014

The evidence given in this book is compelling. Unfortunately we will never be allowed to know the truth and the State will not reply to the awkward questions leaving the newspapers room for endless speculation.

Subaltern: Chronicle of the Peninsular War: A Chronicle of the Peninsular War
Price: £1.19

4.0 out of 5 stars Written in a readable style, 12 Jan. 2014

Very detailed and one can only suppose that he kept extensive notes. Admittedly a lot of time was spent encamped, fishing, shooting and acting as a tour guide, such is the nature of most wars. Readable non the less

4.0 out of 5 stars A quiet gentle read, 8 Nov. 2013

I believe that these stories were written for the Scottish press originally so the chapters are nice bite sized and free from the modern demand for sex and violence. Easy reading.
