5.0 out of 5 stars Snyder's Peanut Butter Pretzel Sandwich, 21 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
After trying and being rather disappointed by the HK Anderson Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels, which are mostly pretzel with only a little peanut butter, I bought these with a little trepidation. But these are lovely, tasty snacks, which have a really good balance between the pretzel sandwich and peanut butter filling.

Being a Japanophile, I had to get this. It provides great hold and is flexible enough that you can rearrange your hairstyle two or three times over the course of the day -and to top it all, it's made in Japan, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mighty Maple, 28 Feb. 2015

I was a little unsure when I first tried this, probably because I put it on seeded bread that already had quite a strong flavour. However, on a nice slice of plain white toast, this is lovely. As you would expect from Peanut Butter Co., sugars are kept to a minimum (8 grams per 32 gram serving) while taste is finely blended between the overriding taste of peanut butter and a hint of the maple syrup. Lovely stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kingdom Milk Chocolate & Peanut Butter Centre, 31 Jan. 2015

Being a sucker for the whole peanut butter/chocolate combination, I had to get this. The flavour is surprisingly subtle, with a slim layer of peanut butter neatly offsetting the rich, not-too-milky chocolate. This is truly deserving of the rather irksome and often over-used word "premium". I look forward to trying Kingdom's other flavours in future!

The Royal Tombs of Egypt: The Art of Thebes Revealed
The Royal Tombs of Egypt: The Art of Thebes Revealed
by Zahi Hawass
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £39.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Sumptuous, 8 Nov. 2014
A sumptuous book on the art of the tombs, where the photographs and plethora of glorious fold-outs are worth the cover price alone. Zahi Hawass is certainly a divisive personality, one of those figures who represent the official view of Egyptology, always ready to poo-poo alternative theories and thus much disliked by Diffusionist researchers. However, this beautiful book gives a concise overview of ancient Egyptian history and a detailed exploration of the ancients' beliefs in the Duat; as a study of ancient Egyptian eschatology it is invaluable. But our hubris and certainties crumble before the wonders of ancient Egypt; its mysteries are endless, no one has the answers, and the maps to the underworld were not made for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best spraypaint I have used, 10 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In terms of durability, this is the best spray paint that I have used for line and stencil markings on concrete. Most spray paints (like Wickes' own-brand and Surveyline) are really for temporary use, but this Plasti-Kote seems far more like permanent paint (but of course without the need of brushes, white spirit, and the resultant mess that paint leaves on clothing). In terms of coverage per can, the Plasti-Kote is about the same as other spray paints I have used, but as durability seems markedly improved over its peers this isn't a big concern.

Shakespeare: staging the world
Shakespeare: staging the world
by Jonathan Bate
Edition: Paperback
Price: £21.25

5.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare's milieu, 4 Oct. 2014
There is so much about Shakespeare that remains mysterious and sublime; there are just two recognised portraits of him, one piece written in his own hand, and one piece of testimony definitely spoken by him. Moreover, as this fine, lavishly illustrated and coherently arranged book points out, although highly regarded by his peers in the theatre, he was not placed in higher esteem than many other playwrights. In fact it was Francis Beaumont, who died a few weeks before Shakespeare, who was accorded the honour of being buried in Westminster Abbey. It was to be the first half of the eighteenth century that was to see his elevation above his contemporaries.

This excellent book discusses his life and works in context; after all, he was someone thoroughly immersed in the -surprisingly cosmopolitan- Early Modern world, and he was inextricably tied in with contemporary views towards such groups as the Jews ("The Merchant Of Venice"), black people ("Othello"), as well as discussion concerning the budding exploration of the New World ("The Tempest"), and a growing sense of a "British identity" as opposed to an English one (his plays after James I's accession to the throne). Like everyone, Shakespeare was not impervious to the requirements of the real world, and he had adapt to specific situations; at some point in his life an actor, social climber (he spent considerable time and energy trying to get a familial coat of arms), schmoozer in search of patrons, theatre manager, schoolboy trudging through Latin grammar, and possibly poacher, too. Tempting as it may be to see him as such, Shakespeare was no isolated genius; perhaps there is a part of Shakespeare in all of us.

An essential purchase.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but I nothing special, 9 Oct. 2013

Nice enough sardines, but they are nothing special. I was a little disappointed after trying Brunswick sardines in other sauces; I find their sardines with Hot Peppers to be softer and more tender, and generally tastier.

Very tasty -albeit pricey- cereal, consisting of cereal ball puffs. Each cereal puff is either peanut butter or chocolate flavour. Considering that the cereal derived from a sweet snack, I should point out I don't find these cereals to be too sickly-sweet. An ideal breakfast pep-up for the long work or school day ahead.

Nutrition: 120 calories per serving without milk (29g), with 10g of sugar in each of these servings.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory course, 27 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really like Paul Noble's approach to the construction of this course. His emphasis is on teaching confidence in the grammatical rules of Italian, but through practical application of the language in day-to-day situations. Many other courses' teaching of rote phrases can make the language seem very abstract, as there is no regard for the rules that lie behind these phrases. Learning a phrase doesn't encourage a creative approach to solving a novice language user's problems when encountering an unexpected situation.

I feel that the key to gaining confidence in any language is to have a grasp of grammatical rules, as a knowledge of grammar gives even a novice speaker a surprising amount of room for improvisation. Although it must be stressed that this course is only really a beginner's guide to Italian, it gives a firm grounding in both the grammatical rules of Itaian and teaches some extremely handy phrases to illustrate these rules. Highly recommended.
