Superb mastery of technique and style. Had never heard this player before but as usual with Naxos recordings, she outclasses many more highly promoted and publicised performers. Very fine interpretation indeed - am quite delighted.

3.0 out of 5 stars Neat idea, 2 Aug. 2013

The problem with gel cushions seems to me to be that although they start out nice and cool, which is relaxing whatever use you put them to, after a while they take on the body's heat. This cushion is no different. On the positive side, this is comprises not one but 2 little cushions, separated by a firmly-sealed strip. So the two equal sides can be doubled up, if placed behind one's back for example, when sitting in a chair; or opened up and slipped inside a pillow, to give extra acreage, so to speak. You can even sit on it, so long as the chair surface is cushioned and not hard. One cannot be sure how well it would take the weight of say, a heavy man. So I ensure I sit on a comfy chair, if I am going to sit on it, to ensure not all my weight is taken by the gel pad.

This isn't a life-changer: I wish it was. But it's proably all one can reasonably expect from a relatively inexpensive get pad. It's also small enough to be easily stowed away somewhere when not in use.

This small tube of cream is expensive, but so are its contents. Small amounts of the cream go a long way nourish the skin and nail areas and while it doesn't claim to be a miracle-cure for fungal infectionone cannot argue about the quality of the excellent ingredients, whose ability to enhance the health of the nail and toe is beyond question. Like so many German medical products this is of a high standard and belongs in any sensible person't bathroom cabinet. Why wouldn't you want such a useful all-round health enhancer for your feet? Our feet get neglected, in general, and this tube takes up next to no space. Worth keeping some on hand, for whenever it's needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two superb interpretations, 2 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These are two Schubert's finest chamber works and these are quite outstanding versions. They would be a worthy addition to any musical collection. Both the octet and the quintet are beautifully balanced interpretations, with fine nuance, colour and attention to musical detail, not least their grasp of how chamber works were performed in Schubert's day. Warmth, expressiveness and rhythm are all there from this superlative group of ensemble players.

This review is from: Schubert: Octet D. 803 (Audio CD)
I am an unashamed admirer of this beautiful octet and although I have many recordings by the excellent Academy of St Martins in the Fields, I found this interpretation a little colourless, perhaps even unassured. Granted the work should not be over-egged by undue romanticism or modern-day emotionalism (trying to extract every last ounce of 'expression' down to the smallest passage), since that was not the style of Vienna music, particuarly chamber works, which were intended for performance in people's houses, not in copcert halls. Hence, of course, the term 'chamber music'. But for me, the Academy seemed to miss a trick here: it is neatly enough played, as one would expect, but I am not sure they quite 'get' what thisexceptional Schubert piece is all about. If you only listened to this one interpretation, you might well wonder what all the fuss is about and why some musicians and scholars trip over themselves praising its musical genius, its feeling for nuance and the richness and colour in Schubert's use of the medium.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual take, 2 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed the film's unusual take on the whole idea of a fairy tale, removing the nursery dimension and turning it into an historical adventure tale instead. Most of the acting is good, including Kristen Stewart, who was far better and more credible than I expect. As the centreal figure, she held the story together and put in a sound performance - and was easy on the eye, too. The fighting scenes are like Marmite: you either like or don't like the Queen's soldiers shattering into black fragments when hit; ditto the Queen herself dispersing then re-assembling from a flock of black ravens/rooks/crows. Scary, yes. Convincing, well not for me. It is today's new genre, and you either like it or you don't. So the special effects form a central part of the film, although they do not go over the top. But it sits uncomfortably for me with the fine traditional storytelling technique. I don't find they work together, personally. But production values are high, script is perfectly workmanlike and the performances are good overall - no obvious weak charatcers. Charlize Theron looks perfectly cast, oozing elegance, beauty and malevolence in equal measure. Very convincing.

Spirit Ladies Silver Sunray Dial Black Multi Thong Watch
Spirit Ladies Silver Sunray Dial Black Multi Thong Watch

3.0 out of 5 stars Multi-thong black strap ladies watch, 28 Oct. 2009
Cute watch whose multi-thong strap looks fun and flirty. Small watch face makes it hard to read quickly, but hey, that's the price of looking different isn't it? More serious criticism is that the watch strap looks plasticky rather than leather and it has a fat, chunky section by the buckle, which looks just as inelegant as the multi-thong section looks dainty. The contrast jars somewhat, making the watch both dainty and chunky at once.

True, when the watch is worn you don't see the chunky strap that much, but it still leaves the design seeming slightly ill thought-out.

But you can't deny its appearance is different and fun. Love it or hate it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good quality watch and cufflinks set, 28 Oct. 2009
The Fossil gents square faced watch and so-called matching cifflinks is a good value pairing. Both are good quality and look well-made. Only reservations about watch are that watch strap is somewehat fat and chunky: this may be the new, young look but it jars slightly on what is a classic watch in appearance. The face is slightly hard to read, since the gold hands don't stand out clearly from the gold face underneath - you need to look hard to read the time. And having no illumination or phosphorous strips in the hands it is impossible to read in the dark. Date read-out is so small as to be laughable and far too small to read unless you stop to stare at it carefully.

These quibbles apart, it is a handsome and impressive looking watch which exudes quality and good craftmanship. Easily controlled time and date control, which rises and disappears back into the sleek side of the watch case.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day [DVD]
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day [DVD]

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark but such fun, 15 April 2009
'Miss Pettigrew' has a dark underlying message, namely that the distance from the high life of the early 20th century and the soup queue was not always that far. You could lose your job and find yourself in the soup queue with one quick firing by your boss. Social security wasn't even a concept in those days, far less a reality.

Yet the pace of this film, which spans just one day, is lively and upbeat, providing plenty of humour, glamour and fairytale improbability. Miss Pettigrew loses her 'position' (job) and finds herself in the soup queue, but chances upon an opportunity to work for a pretty, ditzy showgirl-singer, whose chaotic personal life needs a lot of sorting out. In the one hectic day that follows most things that could happen, do happen to both dowdy Miss Pettigrew (who undergoes a transformation) and her new mistress, including boyfriends and suitors galore, chasing after them in a tragi-comic whirl. And with a suitably happy ending, however unlikely, it all ends in smiles both for Miss Pettigrew and her mistress-for-a-day.
