5.0 out of 5 stars An introduction to the action thriller, 5 Sept. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As introductions to the action thrillers go, this one is perfect for younger readers. This book boasts simple to read, heightened prose and a surprising plot that stands shoulder to shoulder with the young Bond and Alex Rider franchises. The cover of the book promises "fear, mystery and danger". To that I'd add unpredictability, spectacular set pieces, and well-earned emotional moments. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and accessible, 28 July 2016
This book helped me get through my A Level History exams. Unlike an ordinary history textbook, the Britain section of this book was not written chronologically, but instead thematically, which echoed the style of the paper. I found this useful. On the otherhand the Russian section of the book was written year by year, which again married well with the paper that I took. The example exam questions in the book helped me to prepare in the weeks leading up to the exam (in fact one question in the exam was VERY similar to one I'd practiced in the book!!!)

Terrance Dicks is not the best writer on the planet. He will never win a Booker Prize and he will never be a best seller. However, what Terrance Dicks does is thoroughly entertain his audience, get voices spot on, and provide a well-judged pace. 'Players' is a good example of all of that.

A clever conceit, a good use of history - manipulating real people (Churchill, Hitler, King Edward, Wallis Simpson...). It's a fun ride.

I must say it didn't quite have the pizazz of World Game, but it is still well worth a read.
