3.0 out of 5 stars Good Voice, shame about everything else...., 18 Jun. 2003
This review is from: Fallen (Audio CD)
I knew before i bourght this CD what i was in for. I've heard 'Bring Me To Life' so many times and from that one song i kinda anticipated what the remainder of the album would sound like. Full of your typical 'Nu Metal' riffs (usually just 2 riffs per song, a verse riff and chorus riff) and that makes for quite dull song structure really. Halfway through the record i lost interest. I've only listened to the album twice and already songs are beginning to sound the same. Maybe they should stick a few 'bridges' in amongst the songs insted of just verse, chorus, verse, chorus. Thank goodness for the string, choir and piano arrangments layered throughout the tracks, these work very well and i'd dread to think of what it would sound like without them.
I think much more complex riffs and more drastic time changes would really improve things.
Now i did notice a couple of guitar solos which fit the music very well and i was suprised to hear acoustic guitar picking on 'Everybody's Fool', if only they could keep this sort of experimentation throughout and not be scared of trying something new coz basically this stuff has all been done before.
Also lyrically the album is poor and not the style of writing i look for in a record, although there are a few lines here and there which are quite clever i think.
So anyway why the 3 stars? Well thats 'Amy Lee' of course! She has a fantastic voice, the best female vocal i've ever heard.
The standout tracks are 'My Immortal' and 'Hello' simply because Amy sings those type of songs so well. Her voice is so good i could cry. The only reason i would play this CD again is to hear her voice. It really is worth buying the album for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You Killswitch Engage!, 24 May 2002

I bourght this album because of its comparison to MachineHead's 'Burn My Eyes' which was one of the great metal debuts. As for 'Alive or just Breathing' this is just as good a debut album. I can't help but notice how much the drums sound so much like those on Machine Heads first two offerings which is definatly a good thing. This is probably the heaviest CD in my collection, the music changes so well throughout the album from heavy to melodic as well do Jesse Leech's vocals from aggresive to mellow. The lyrics are beautifully written and fits the music well. This album is surely going to be one that will never be forgotten and this band will be mentioned again and again in metals future...
