5.0 out of 5 stars Love and loss but happy ending!, 26 Aug. 2017

Another really great, true to life story from Jen Silver. Starting with the (unexpected to one half of the couple) break-up after fourteen years of Beth and Sam and leading on to their respective encounters with the women staying at Temperley Cliffs Golf Resort. I felt as if I knew them all by the time I finished this book. The 'in the closet' head teacher, Lydia; the sexy Freya and sporty Andi whose marriages of convenience begin to take very different paths plus young Jordan just starting her career as a golf pro. I wondered at first if the background golf theme would detract from enjoying the story. But it doesn't. The focus is very much on the interaction among the characters with a fast moving plot, some sly bits of humour and touching descriptions of the range of emotions experienced in 'coming out', in loneliness and in the deep joy of finding lesbian love. Once you start reading this book, you'll find it hard to put down.

The last German Empress
The last German Empress

2.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story but poorly written, 7 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This should be a great read but it isn't. The life and times of the Empress are of social and historical interest but the narrative is stilted and repetitive. Appears not to have been edited. The Empress deserves better and hopefully a more professional biography will be written in the future.

Christmas at Winterbourne: A Memoir in the Making
Christmas at Winterbourne: A Memoir in the Making
Price: £4.76

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance and mystery entwined, 3 Nov. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another really good read from Jen Silver. Her writing just draws the reader in and I felt I was one of the guests booked in for Christmas at Winterbourne - watching relationships blossom (or fall apart). Lots of characters in this book but each is cleverly described making it easy to identify who is who - and who is with whom. I love Jen's fluid, informal style of writing and her occasional very funny nuggets of humour. There is nothing superficial about this story - background details emerge in well structured layers - and mysteries are neatly resolved in happy endings. A meaty and enjoyable book well timed for the festive season.

I truly loved this latest book from Jen Silver. 'The Circle Dance' is a perfect blend of romantic, happy, stressful, sad and tender moments in the lives of gay women working and living in beautiful West Yorkshire. The characters are well drawn and credible as are their various work and home environments and you feel right there with them as their lives dance around each other. And the cat, Stevie! Lovable, picky, moody as all cats are. There are some surprising twists in this tale which is written in Silver's fluid, easy reading style. Happy endings for all? Maybe! Maybe not. Once again, Jen Silver succeeds brilliantly with this contemporary romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Memories of the Gorbals, 11 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a Glaswegian who is a bit older than the author, Colin McFarlane, I enjoyed the memories evoked by his book. But disappointed that it was very much a rewrite of stories already published and his memory of Glasgow street songs is not good. Every song quoted contained errors - a shame as these need to be properly recorded soon before we all die off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern love and intrigue on the Yorkshire moors, 6 Feb. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another really cracking tale from Jen Silver. Mixes love and romance, intrigue, history and genealogy in a pacy story about a group of gay women involved in tracking down the treasure of an ancient Roman Queen. True to life, vivid characters all bring their own hopes, desires and fears to the farm at Starling Hill. Lots of touches of humour - plus - there are happy endings for everyone! There's a real depth to this book which makes it unputdownable once started.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful factual record of Tey and her friends and family, 7 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Josephine Tey: A Life (Hardcover)
Interesting record of Tey's life spoiled by very poor editing. Far too much repetition. The author is prone to surmising reasons where no facts exist and although this does not detract substantially from the read, it comes across sometimes as fictional rather than factual. Otherwise a good description of social conditions prevailing throughout Tey's life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Jen Silver, 20 May 2015

Another great, pacy read from Jen Silver. She describes so well the angst, elation, heartache and joy of lesbian love and all set against the unusual background of archaeology of Roman England. And it’s not just the lovers who are so well described but also the relationships among the other characters are fascinating - I really feel as if I know these women! Some tears along the way but happy endings - another plus. Jen writes so fluently and crisply - a joy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, 3 Oct. 2014

This is a cracking story with a heady mix of lesbian love and friendship, Roman history, archaeology and the gay community in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire. The writing is pacy with occasional giggle out loud bits. The personalities in the book are totally believable and I really enjoyed the feeling all through the story that ‘I know these people’. Jen Silver has the knack of gripping and holding readers’ attention and builds up the ending superbly. Already looking forward to her next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good idea but not well researched, 11 July 2014

A good story and plot negated by lack of research/knowledge of the period in which it is set. Half decent editing would have removed some of the most obvious howlers.
