5.0 out of 5 stars The most fun you'll have in history, 10 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is quite simply a brilliant book. Readable, fun, exciting and that rare type of book that you really do not want to end. Finkel describes how he came to be a curator at the BM, the discovery of the tablet, its translation and its significance. But what makes the book stand out is its humour. I love ancient history and archaeology but I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud reading a book on the subject. Thank you, Irvine. Also loved your lecture at the BM and thanks for signing my copy with some cuneiform. Top man.

The Sign: The Shroud of Turin and the Secret of the Resurrection
The Sign: The Shroud of Turin and the Secret of the Resurrection
by Thomas De Wesselow
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £20.00

3.0 out of 5 stars Mad, bad, God or cloth?, 15 Aug. 2012
Mad, bad or God? This saying has often been used as a way of summing up the options open to any serious enquiror as to who Jesus is. With Thomas De Wesselow's new book, "The Sign", one can now add, "or cloth". For this is what De Wesselow's book essentially adds to the two thousand year old debate about what really happened on that first Easter Sunday in the early years of the first Century. His proposition is basically in two parts: the Shroud of Turin is the genuine burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth, who suffered crucifiction and death under Pontius Pilate and further more, the image of Jesus left on the cloth and not Jesus's bodily resurrection was the cause of Jesus's disciples' belief in his resurrection and the reason why the church was born.
On the first point he makes a persuasive albeit not necessarily terribly original case for the genuineness of the cloth and gives a fair hearing to opposing views, in particular the radio carbon test that apparently proved the shroud to be a medieval forgery.
However, on the second point while his hypothesis is original and provides the first real alternative to ages old arguments against Jesus's resurrection (swoon theories, mistaken identity etc.) De Wesselow has to both rely on and dismiss the primary evidence, namely the Gospels and letters of the New Testament and in this, he has to resort to unfounded dismissals of the narratives. Very early on, he describes the Gospel writings as hopelsessly contradictory and little more than late fabrications. He has clearly not read John Wenham's book, "Easter Enigma" that demonstrates the veracity of the accounts and how the different narratives knit together despite the superficial contradictions. De Wesselow also stretches to credulity his ideas by reading back into the very scriptures he holds with such distain and thereby undermine his case.
Make no mistake, though, if De Wesselow is right - if Jesus did not bodily rise from the dead, if all the disciples ever saw was a corpse wrapped in an enigmatic cloth - then the church has been built on a lie, the Christian faith can be cast into oblivion and De Wesselow should be feted by humanists everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully evocative, 6 Nov. 2011
The Original Soundtrack from the BBC TV Series. I watched this series when it first came out in 1985 and simply had to buy the soundtrack. The copy I have is the original BBC vinyl LP release so I can only assume the version for sale on Amazon contains the same themes. There are 18 tracks, a selection of the most representative themes from the series including the wonderful main theme, which is reprised at the end. For me, the best track is the Wedding Procession, which I loved so much I wanted it played for my own wedding. Alas.... If the Roman Empire and the early days of Christianity had a musical soundtrack, surely it was this. Buy and enjoy. Shame the film series itself appears to be unavailable.
