5.0 out of 5 stars Love on the Dole is a Classic.., 13 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Love On The Dole (Paperback)
Walter Greenwood's novel deserves to be a classic. I first read it in the 80's and it's description of an earlier society ground down by hardship was extremly vivid and I found well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Account of the 1940 Katyn Massacre., 13 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Katyn Massacre (Paperback)
This is an earlier book from the 1970's that outlines the crime. At this time in the west it was generally known that the crime had been committed by the Soviets however many left leaning intellectuals continued to toe the Soviet line that the German's did it and it was a crime in eastern Europe until 1989 even to mention anything other than the official state line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Katyn. The Crime that the West would like to Forget., 13 Feb. 2014
Katyn is the crime that won't go away. Everybody who examines the details of the facts cannot fail to see it being a war crime of horrendous proportions, yet no one has ever stood trial. Katyn was actually one of the sites and actions of a concerted effort to destroy the Polish culture in the Soviet occupied zone. The deportation and the murder of many of over 1,500,000 Poles between 1939 and 1945 was the broader action in these "Kresy" lands.

Katyn was one of three sites where over 22,000 Polish officers and intelligensia were murdered. It was the first scene that was discovered by the German's in 1943. The discovery of this act put a sever strain on the Alliance as the Soviet Union had become a major partner and Poland relegated to the role of junior - this in spite of the fact that the invasion of Poland, France, Norway and the Low Countries had been possible thanks to Stalin helping Hitler in the first half of the war with massive supplies of raw materials and oil whilst the Poles had fought Hitler from day one.

Shortly after the discovery of the massacre site and the Poles request for intervention by the Red Cross Stalin broke of the tenuous relations he had with the Poles in London blaming the German's for the crime and accusing the Poles of political manouvering. At this time he gave orders for his partisans to attack all vestiges of Polish culture, nationhood and authority in eastern Poland, effectively Ethnic Cleansing (the territories he had agreed to take over during the Nazi-Soviet invasion in 1939 and which he intended to keep at the end of the war).

Stalin ordered his partisans to liaise with the Gestapo in order to elimenate the Polish underground by betrayal. The Polish resistance reeled under attacks from German's and Soviet/Jewish/Communist partisans. The nail in the coffin was the Warsaw Uprising which saw the Poles battling for 63 days with the Germans while the Soviets did not intervene while the Polish AK was anhilated and Warsaw destroyed. Not content with this result the surviving members of the AK would be hunted down as criminals by the Soviet NKVD and UB security services after the fall of the capital and the end of the war.

Class Cleansing: The Massacre at Katyn
Class Cleansing: The Massacre at Katyn

5.0 out of 5 stars Analysis of the Massacre of 22,000 Polish Officers in 1940 using New Archive Material, 12 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Victor Zaslavsky is the 2008 winner of the Hannah Arendt award for Political Thought. He was born in Leningrad in 1937 and emigrated in 1974 to the US.

Zaslavsky in his book asserts that this was an act of classicide, the destruction of people for the reason of which class in society they belonged in. With the Soviets, a takeover of a country involved the desctruction of it's educated, ruling class leaving the rest of the nation in a position to be indoctrinated and ruled.

The book also shows how the Soviet's manufactured the evidence to support their side of the story and how they benefited from the complicity of western governements and a left wing biased media and historians - something which Poles still have to contend with.

The recent 2013 ECHR ruling that it is not able to judge on this act is shameful and gives one little confidence for the abiliy of the ECHR to do what it is supposed to do.

A Christmas Carol (Classic Edition With Original Illustrations)
A Christmas Carol (Classic Edition With Original Illustrations)
Price: £0.99

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Novels ever Written., 9 Feb. 2014
This classic by Charles Dickens is a great read. This is a traditional Christmas story. The story of Scrooge undergoing his transformation from tight-fisted meanie to a big-hearted friendly type pulls at the heart strings.

The story enchanted me when I was younger and I have never forgotten the wonderful images created by Charles Dicken's pen.

Christams as we know it came about in the Victorian era and Charles Dickens did much to create our concept of Christmas.

It was also Dickens that highlighted the many injustices in society and his books opened to public the misery and hardships of Britain's poor as well as entertaining readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early Account of the Murder of 22,000 Polish Officer's By the Soviet's in 1940., 8 Feb. 2014
In reality Katyn rpresents just a fraction of the probably 2,000,000 ethnic Poles who were persecuted, deported or murdered at the beginning of WW2.

Regarding the partitioning of Poland, Molotov told the Supreme Soviet that "a short strike at Poland, first by the German Army and, then, by the Red Army was enough for nothing to be left from this ugly offspring of the Treaty of Versailles". This sentiment clearly indicates that the independant state of Poland was the target of both the Nazi and Soviet regimes. This completely undermines the communist apologist brigade that Stalin entered Poland to help the Poles and establish a buffer against the Germans. The sovreignity of Poland and the murder of its's educated class and the enslavement of the population were the aims.

A Century of State Murder?: Death and Policy in Twentieth Century Russia

No matter how much this subject is ignored there are enough accounts around to provide anyone interested with the facts. 22,000 Polish officers and intelligensia murdered in a deliberate attempt to destroy Poland's educated class and replace it with loyal communists, many imported from the Soviet Union.

5.0 out of 5 stars A True Story. Stones For The Rampart., 6 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Kamienie na szaniec (Paperback)
This book edition is currently only available in Polish and is the well known, and I should add, true story of Polish teenagers which begins shortly before WW2. It is well known because it was written shortly at the war's end and is a popular book for teenage reading as well as being used in literature study.

The story is about dedicated young people who wishing to develop themselves form a scout group in Warsaw. Their emphasis is on the typical idealistic scouting principles and their activities reflect this.

With the German invasion, the ideal world of the teenagers changes from one of hiking and study to conspiracy as they join the "Grey Ranks" movement, formed from the younger members of the Polish Resistance which came to be known as the "AK".

Their actions and adventures would be written down by the author Alexander Kaminski himself a member of the "AK" and their battle against the invaders would earn them a place in the history of the Polish scouting movement and their self-sacrifice held up as an example to generations of young people even to this day. Additionally their selflesness would earn the members of the group Poland's highest military awards, in some cases posthumously.

This story is being made as a Polish language film to be released shortly. This will be an updated version of the one previously released some years ago.

In September 2014 will be released "Miasto 44".

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Forget to look over your shoulder., 31 Jan. 2014
Atmospheric film of life in the GDR before the Wall fell and the Iron Curtain opened. Artists are targeted by the state and placed under observation. The role played by the eavesdropping "expert" is superb. Imagine they used to give lessons in techniques on how to spy on their citizens.

Having travelled across eastern Europe and met East Germans, the feel to the film is very authentic. The GDR had a reputation for many of its citizens being involved in keeping tabs on each other, and this feeling of "being watched" persisted among them long after the Wall came down.

Another great film dealing with the former GDR. Good Bye Lenin! [DVD] [2002]

5.0 out of 5 stars World's largest mass Murder against Christian Ukraine., 31 Jan. 2014
The largest mass murder of humans in history preceded the Jewish Holocaust by ten years, but is almost completely ignored by a controlled media. It is estimated that between 3-7 million people perished when food supplies were confiscated and Ukraine was isolated.
