4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting characters and plot, full of suspense and mystery, 30 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Under Currents (Kindle Edition)
The book is full of suspense and keeps the reader interested till the end. In fact, I was intrigued from the very first page and wanted to know more about why Caleb was being treated like that. The main characters are well developed and for the most part the plot is well-developed. The problem was that parts of the ending felt rushed - which was a shame because the rest of the book was anything but rushed. An example of something towards the end that felt very rushed was the sudden dramatic change of behaviour of one character, which was unconvincing. Overall, a good read. The author successfully kept various aspects of the story a mystery until over half way through - which not only keeps the reader guessing but makes this a gripping read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Freud's life and theories, 10 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is well written and easy to read - its a "quick read" that can be read in a couple of hours. Astonishingly, for an e-book(!), I think it was actually devoid of typos! Its a good introduction to Freud and some of his ideas. However, there were times when it would have been great if certain ideas and topics were explored in greater detail - for example, the chapter on Freud's theories seems to skate over Freud's various theories, especially "life and death instincts" and "defence mechanisms". Nonetheless this book is a good starting point for further learning about Freud and his theories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mainly mental journey of self-discovery through exploration of mainly cultural ideas, 9 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A different style of writing that is entertaining and stimulating. Various topics and aspects of culture are explored in the protagonists mainly mental journey of self-discovery. Its slow paced, although not leisurely, even intense at times because of the topics discussed. However, for a work of fiction the plot required more substance, more of a story. If you want to read something fast-paced and action packed, then this is not for you. If, however, you are interested in reading something that is slow-paced, a work of fiction whereby the protagonists main journey is a mental one, through exploration of various mostly cultural ideas, then you may be interested in this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well developed, with twists and turns - and I bet you can't guess who the killer is!, 6 Dec. 2012

A fantastic storyline, with twists and turns - and also various different complications. I did not guess who the killer was as the author successfully cast suspicion on various characters. Its gripping, entertaining and intriguing from the first page. Yes, its a page turner - but without being too intense all the way through - there are "welcome breaks" where the reader can just get to know the characters better. Indeed, the characters are well developed. After reading this, I did search for other books by this author - however, I was disappointed to discover only one and that was concerned with "voo doo" which is not really something I enjoy reading about (I'm not against fantasy, science fiction genres and in fact love them - however, with regards to the crime genre or romantic suspense, I much prefer plots that are set in the "real world").

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful adventure full of wisdom, 24 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Absolutely fantastic storytelling. Wonderful adventure filled with profound wisdom - for example, "when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it". So much like a fable or a fairy tale with a moral. Suitable for readers of all ages. Incredibly inspiring.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meaningful but some aspects of the writing detract from the plot, 24 Nov. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The concept is good and full of potential. Furthermore, the individual little stories do encourage you to think about the deeper meaning of life. However, some aspects of the way it is written do detract from the plot. For example, there are a few clumsy sentences which make the book difficult to read. Also, some parts are repetitive, monotonous and irritating - for example, the "too many" mentions to the obvious fact that it is 29th Feb and that it would have been 1st March had it not been a leap year. The ending is inspirational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warm, gentle and humourous, 30 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed reading this. It is interesting without being an emotional rollarcoaster, which is just what I needed! Warm and humourous throughout. I recommend this if you want something "gentle" to read that is really good. Despite being "gentle", the plot definitely contains quite a few surprises! It is well-written - full of wit and intelligent prose, yet also easy to read if you haven't read for a while - if the latter is true, then this book will definitely revive your love for reading!

4.0 out of 5 stars Escapism and Entertainment, 30 Oct. 2012

Gripping and entertaining. Crime and mystery novel thats set in a different and original environment, which is interesting and provides escapism. Plot is full of twists and the characters are well-developed. I found a couple of scenes a bit too gruesome, but I guess its expected for this genre. Easy to read if you haven't read for a while.
