Arias for Caffarelli / Franco Fagioli
Arias for Caffarelli / Franco Fagioli

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnifico!, 10 Sept. 2013
The amazingly talented young counter-tenor Franco Fagioli presents a quite rare, sophisticated and demanding selection of baroque arias. A beautiful voice, a perfect technique, a refined musicality: all of these assets make Fagioli's prospects in discography quite promising, in my view. This CD is a revelation or even a sensation in baroque music interpretation this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendorous!, 20 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Arabesque (Audio CD)
Peretyatko's voice is beautiful, her techinique is exquisite. Here we have a singer of a refined musicality! The repertoire, though a rather eclectic one, lets her show her marvellous voice and technique in the best way possible. "Solovei" (Nightingale) is a real real jewel of this disc. In one word: a star was born several years ago and now it begins to shine brightly!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not at all convincing, 14 Aug. 2013
This review is from: Verdi (Audio CD)
Netrebko's timbre is very beautiful, her technique has considerably progressed over the years. But it is not by any means enough to sing Verdi's dramatic roles. Her Lady Macbeth is not very far from sounding like an operetta role: the singer seems to have no understanding of the role's tragic dimension. Her voice is too light and the colour isn't appropriate to sing it. The sound, beautiful as it might be, is quite monotonous, and the phrasing is also very much so: what's the difference between Elena and Elisabetta? I have not made it out from this recording. Arias from "Il Trovatore" seem to sound better. I can't believe this CD is really the result of a five-year work. If it is really so, Netrebko does not have any insight into Verdi dramatic roles, I am afraid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite!, 27 Nov. 2012

A very interesting CD of baroque arias (17-18th centuries, from Monteverdi to Haydn): dramatic areas, to be more exact, which explains the title of the CD. Joyce DiDonato is very expressive, the arias are really beautiful. Higly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Neumeier's masterpiece magnificently performed!, 4 Nov. 2012
Everything in this performance seems just perfect: brilliant dramaturgy, brilliant staging and brilliant performers! Though technically this ballet is not the most demanding one at all, dramatically it is very much so. Agnès Letestu, the living embodiment of Marguerite, reveals herself not only as an accomplished ballerina, but also as an extremely expressive and sensitive actress. As for the music, one can hardly think of any other choice but pieces of Chopin, wonderfully executed. This live recording from the Paris Opera is a must for anyone interested in scenic arts and ballet in particular.

3.0 out of 5 stars Strange selection of divas, sometimes poor print quality, 16 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lost Divas (Hardcover)
Why on Earth is Rosa Ponselle (and some other famous singers) included among the lost divas? Anyone who has some serious interest in the art of opera knows her name and has surely listened to her recordings. Why aren't Italian female singers included in the album? It seems absolutely impossible to understand.
The typographic quality is sometimes very poor, which is really a bid deception.
On the other hand, some of the photos are very rare. This book might be interesting for real real opera fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very fine piece of music, 5 Jun. 2010

I really enjoyed listening to this CD. This is a very interesting approach to the Russian folk music. Contrary to what some reviewers tell you, both the chorus and the chorus director DO have a solid professional training, their performance is absolutely PROFESSIONAL and the sound quality is absolutely OK. Russian folk melodism, in its melancholic line, is very well represented on this CD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scenes from lumpen's life, a lack of a good script, 1 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Lower City [DVD] [2006] (DVD)
I think that a great lack of good scripts is a very very big problem of the cinema worldwide now. This film presents a very banal story of a love triangle in the lumpen milieu. The lowest of the low 90 per cent of the film. People guided only by their, sometimes destructive instincts. Sometimes very dull... The same banal worn out "clichés": South America-sex-drugs-violence. And so what?
The work of the cameraman, however, is excellent.
