The one's I received are poor quality and have almost no stretch in them at all eg 40cm one (yellow in my pack) only stretched an additional 8 cm. Not very useful. Also the 'cable' is very thin.

Bloody Victory: The Sacrifice on the Somme and the Making of the Twentieth Century: The Battle, the Myth, the Legacy
Bloody Victory: The Sacrifice on the Somme and the Making of the Twentieth Century: The Battle, the Myth, the Legacy
by William James Philpott
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars A picture (or map in this case) is worth a thousand words!, 13 July 2016

One of the new 'revisionist' historians, WP explains the way the Somme was fought and, to some extent, exonerates the 'donkeys'. At the same time WP does not deny the cold, 'mathematical approach to war'. War is, and always was, horror one cannot sugar that pill.

My main criticisms are that for a non-specialist it is far too detailed and long and most importantly it lacks READABLE maps!
The maps it does have are essentially black, grey & white
This failure to adequately 'illustrate' the battle(s) makes following the events very hard indeed and is, IMO, the principle defect of this book.

I did like the way WP takes a broader view and actually covers 1918 & 1940 Somme battles too.

Overall unless you need to follow every twist and turn, and have access to good maps elsewhere, I would, sadly, say avoid.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good solid case., 13 July 2016

A good solid case. As everyone else has said it folds neatly to make a stand, locks the tablet when covered over and, most importantly, provides good protection for corners especially.

My one minor gripe is that is does make holding the tablet in the 'portrait' position a tad uncomfortable.
Other than that I would definitely recommend this, especially for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Both a joy to look at and very informative, 15 Nov. 2015

This review is from: Turner in his Time (Hardcover)
Both a joy to look at and an informative biography.

The pictures are well reproduced and the text well written. All the more necessary after Mike Leigh's travesty of a film! The Turner that emerges here is a complex and far from perfect in character but he was not a pervert or sexually abusive, as ML himself admits.

For 'truth' and visual pleasure read the book and avoid the film.

PS I should add liked Timothy Spall's acting a great deal, just not the highly fictionalised script.

You should never go back ... I used to love this record (sic) but it is hasn't aged well. Still if you loved the original it does bring back memories.

Ancient Rome, the Rise and Fall of an Empire
Ancient Rome, the Rise and Fall of an Empire
by Simon Baker
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good book for brushing up/learning about 'the Romans'., 15 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very enjoyable, readable and short history of Rome. Took it on holiday to Italy to review/update and expand my knowledge rather patchy knowledge of ancient Roman history.

While I'm looking forward to read Beard's SPQR, this book is a much more practical 'holiday' book. You can read it in a few days and then get much more out of visiting the sites. Beard's book (I suspect) is a longer read for the winter fireside as you recall what you saw!

Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther (New International Biblical Commentary. Old Testament Series, 9)
Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther (New International Biblical Commentary. Old Testament Series, 9)
by Leslie C. Allen
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars A very good commentary, 15 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this commentary very readable and, much more importantly, insightful. It certainly changed my views on Nehemiah and Esther (less so on Ezra). Both Nehemiah and Esther have become much more understandable and 'human'. People to respect and learn from.

Sadly Ezra still comes across as more ayatollah than human being but then we're not supposed to find everyone in the Bible as entirely admirable. Some people are a 'negative' example ie more what to not to do eg Jepthath's sacrifice of his daughter (Judges 11)!

Overall two out of three is more than good :)

Prophecy of Isaiah
Prophecy of Isaiah
by Alec Motyer
Edition: Paperback
Price: £19.99

3.0 out of 5 stars More for the serious academic than for the serious lay reader., 15 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Prophecy of Isaiah (Paperback)
Overall a very widely used but very technical commentary. Easy going it is not. Far more for reference than for reading. I've switched to reading Goldingay's briefer but very good commentary, and referring to this when I want more.

A major frustration is that it lacks some of the basics of a technical commentary such as an index, or indeed, any index at all! This makes it rather frustrating to use. If you're trying to follow a discussion on a particular topic you have to find the 'first reference' and then Motyer does point you forward but not ideal.

Similarly there's only a (very!) 'Select' Bibliography. If you're trying to find the full details of a citation good luck, there's no author index so back to looking for the 'first reference'.

Finally, to me it reads like a series of technical mini-monographs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun cook book with good imaginative recipes., 15 Nov. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Brought this book to take with us on a recent trip to Italy. We've really enjoyed cooking from it.

I have to say it is slightly easier to cook with it in Italy than in the UK, as some of the easily available ingredients in Italy are harder to find here eg some of the cheeses. However that was partly the joy of having it in Italy, and the (small!) challenge of using it in the UK.

Overall I would recommend this cook book to everyone who likes Italian food.

GCSE Mathematics Revision and Practice: Higher Student Book (Gcse Maths Revision and Practi)
by David Rayner
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for revision but not for learning from scratch!, 15 July 2015

I'm using it to help my kids. Overall a very good revision book but while it has masses of exercises the explanations are rather terse.
If you didn't get it in the class, or the parent can't remember (!) this won't help as much, but if you need practice this is excellent.
