Sorry, its a real stinker...what were Colin Firth and Tom Courtney thinking? One star purely for the cast....just, plain, awful.

4.0 out of 5 stars a flawed masterpiece, 4 Feb. 2014

I love this film, and have see it many, many time. It goes a little off the rails in the second half, but the opening scenes and the wonderful bar scene featuring the author Paul Bowles are just incredible. Its a modern cinema epic, and for lovers of film, a must see. Bravo Bernardo Bertolucci.....

3.0 out of 5 stars fascinating...but not quite sure what its all about..., 4 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Interior. Leather Bar [DVD] (DVD)
Having seen CRUISING when it was first released, it was certainly an interesting and confronting film, for its time, given it features straight actors and a straight director, with a major studio producing it. However it challenged all sorts of issues around gay lifestyles, and having Al Pacino in the lead only made it much more titillating, and full marks to hime fort doing it.
But INTERIOR, LEATHER BAR is essentially a curiosity. Are we to assume that there will be the 40 minutes of film that has been 're-imagined' made available at some later date? I have to say its not all that interesting to me either way.....Otherwise, what is the point of this documentary? It looks like its one of the 'special features' extras on the DVD that has the complete 40 minutes of re-filmed footage - which is exactly what the INTERIOR: LEATHER BAR is all about?....
I'm a great fan of James Franco...but with this 59 minute release, I get the feeling that the 40 minutes of actual footage has gone to a private collection.....question is...who's?

Keep The Lights On [Blu-ray] [Region Free]
Keep The Lights On [Blu-ray] [Region Free]

2.0 out of 5 stars interesting film, poor quality of the Bluray, 13 April 2013
Was very much looking forward to this film, but the Blu-ray transfer is ordinary to say the least, I believe no better than DVD quality, and where are the subtitles? Really poor that these are not included on a release of this calibre. Sound levels were all over the place too. If the master material doesn't lend itself to Blu-ray release, then don't release it in this format.......i
The film itself was clever, perceptive and engaging, spanning a number of years and the varying forms and transitions that relationships take, but overall was let down by the lack of subtitles and indifferent picture quality. My advise, if you would like to buy this film, just buy the DVD, the BD is not worthy of the extra outlay.

What a shame that 20th Fox has not put any effort, whatsoever, into the transfer of this great film. The image is indistinct, its just so disappointing. Its such a great film, but its deserves much, much better treatment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Bluray of a great film...., 29 Jan. 2013

This review is from: Brassed Off [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Superb picture quality of this Blu-ray release is such an improvement on the DVD version I have had for years. Whilst in 2.0 Stereo (presumably as this is how it was filmed), the sound is crisp and clear. A great film, and extremely relevant today in these days of corporate greed and less than ever care for the average worker. Would have been great to have had some more 'extras' material, thats my only quibble.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, Befuddling and Exasperating., 1 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Parade's End [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
PARADE'S END is a BBC production of a tetralogy of novels released between 1924 and 1928. Personally I found it all very confusing, and despite very fine photography, and a superb Blu-ray transfer, ultimately disappointing.
There are two ways to look at this production. You can either embrace it as a simple love story, albeit a very complex one, or as a comment on the breakdown of the class system in the lead up to, and the aftermath of the First World War. Sadly, it doesn't work on either of these levels, presumably as there was so much information in the books, it was well-nigh impossible to encapsulate it all in near on 5 hours of television. Clearly this is why it has never been attempted before - its just too complex, even for a TV series.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Rebecca Hall are both fine performers, and try their best with the material, as well as the very good supporting cast, but it just doesn't come together with any cohesion; I felt no empathy for the main characters, and kept waiting for something to bring it all together - which never came.
And just a note on the Blu-ray menu itself, its PARTICULARLY infuriating that you are unable to select an episode to play from the main menu - you have to PLAY ALL and fast forward to where you left off. Annoying.
The two stars are for the beautiful photography and the outstanding production standards.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile..but only just..., 18 Dec. 2012

Was very much looking forward to this on Bluray, but have to say overall quite disappointed. Colours are fine, but the general transfer, for a full restoration, leaves a lot to be desired. Blurry edges, which I'm assuming is a carryover from the Cinemascope process, are evident, but the sound quality is very good. So really only for the hardened fans...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 6 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Isadora [DVD] (DVD)
I have wanted to see ISADORA for many years, and as it's only had very limited release, and not any at all on DVD, I was really pleased to see it turn up at last.
Picture and sound fine, but this film is in desperate need of a remake. Its overly long (and I understand it was originally released at over 3 hours, until some judicious editing took place), the second half drags, and could have been told a lot better than it is. Isadora Duncan was presumably a fascinating character, and the wonderful Vanessa Redgrave gives it her all, but it just, plain, doesn't work. VR is clearly not a dancer, which seriously impacts on the credibility of the film. Its also irritating that the second disc of this set is in fact a filmed version of a ballet based on Isadora Duncan. Some extras on the film itself, interviews etc, would have been of more interest.

4.0 out of 5 stars SUCH FUN, 29 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had not heard of this film until a friend recommended it to me. I tried in vain to track it down, but was unsuccessful. Then, as if by fate, it was recommended to me by Amazon.
Its a very funny film, Susan Sarandon and Ralph Feinnes must have had such fun making this. Do your self a favour, just buy it, you won't be disappointed. And marvel at how the other half live! And also watch two brilliant actors do their 'stuff', so well.
