One Day
One Day
by David Nicholls
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read, 25 Oct. 2012
This review is from: One Day (Paperback)
One Day did sometimes delve into the chick-lit genre a few too many times for my liking but overall this is a really solid read with characters you genuinely care about. For much of the book, nothing very sensational happens but the pace is kept brisk and the reader is drawn in by the fully-rounded characters. It's definitely one for the beach!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most moving and 'real' depictions of first love I have ever seen!, 21 Nov. 2011
This review is from: Harvest [DVD] (DVD)
Harvest is one of the most original and beautiful gay romances I have ever seen. The slow burning film follows the growing attraction between two 'straight' male farmhands. What starts as a tentative friendship turns into something achingly real. The film has such a natural and authentic sensibility that, at times, it almost feels as if you are watching a documentary. The performances are affecting, to say the least, and the actors have a genuine chemistry which shines throughout.

Another Gay Movie this ain't but if you're looking for a coming-of-age story with a difference this is for you!

4.0 out of 5 stars My Name is Mr G; three talents, 1, 2, 3..., 12 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Summer Heights High [DVD] (DVD)
One of the most eminently quotable comedy shows, Summer Heights High is an inspired mockumentary which is totally deserved of its cult status. Chris Lilley's three protagonists are each hilarious in their own way but the series really shines thanks to the comedian's portrayal of a fame-hungry drama teacher, Mr G. At times the humour can pretty controversial but is always delivered with tongue firmly in cheek. A great series!

Party Monster: A Fabulous But True Tale of Murder in Clubland
Party Monster: A Fabulous But True Tale of Murder in Clubland
by James St. James

5.0 out of 5 stars Horrifying and hilarious in equal measure, 25 Feb. 2010
Party Monster is a totally original and riveting read - in equal parts horrifying and hilarious it details the drug-fuelled demise of New York club kid Michael Alig and his blasé murder of drug dealer Angel.

The book is written with total verve and wit and author James St James is a fascinating character by himself but once you throw in outrageous fashion, depraved drug fiends and unbelievable anecdotes you have the makings of a modern classic. Inspired, laugh-out-loud funny and totally shocking - a unique read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing..., 5 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Beautiful People (Paperback)
When I first started reading Beautiful People I was sure that I was going to love it but sadly ended up becoming weary of the quirky anecdotes which at first were amusing and touching but soon became tired and dull. Doonan certainly has moments of hilarious observation and parts had me laughing aloud but by the end of the book I was bored by the vacant tales. For an anecdotal read go to David Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs instead!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the year's best!, 5 Jan. 2010
This review is from: Lungs (Audio CD)
This is undoubtedly one of 2009's best releases. In a year that was filled with wailing female stars, Lungs rises head and shoulders above the likes of La Roux, Little Boots and Lily Allen with an atmospheric and, at times, epic feel that is hard to resist. An amazing debut!

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable comedy!, 5 Jan. 2010
This review is from: The Hangover [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
This isn't my usual type of film but I have to say that I ended up enjoying The Hangover more than I ever imagined! The film is perfectly cast and is paced at a wickedly breakneck speed as it follows three friends on the hunt for a missing groom after the most eventful Stag Night in history! Perfect for an easy-going fun night in!

The Insider: The Private Diaries of a Scandalous Decade
The Insider: The Private Diaries of a Scandalous Decade
by Piers Morgan
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining insight into media, politics and celebrity, 5 Jan. 2010
While not a fan of Piers Morgan himself, there's no doubt that this is an insightful and entertaining read. Following the exploits of one of the most powerful members of the UK's media was always going to be interesting but this surpassed any expectations I had. The most intriguing thing about the book is Morgan's relationships with certain politicians and the incredible access he had to inside goings-on. His run-ins with Cherie Blair are also legendary and recounted in salacious detail. A must read, just as long as you can withstand Morgan's seemingly impenetrable ego!

Running With Scissors: A Memoir
Running With Scissors: A Memoir

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, unique memoir, 5 Jan. 2010
Running With Scissors is one of the most unique memoirs I have ever read - both heart-breaking and hilarious. Augusten provides an intimate account of his outlandish upbringing and paints deliciously vivid characters, including that of his complex mother who is at turns both fabulous and achingly selfish. For anyone who felt they didn't quite fit, this is an intoxicating read! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly original horror, 16 May 2008
This review is from: Gruesome [2006] [DVD] (DVD)
This effectively chilling low-budget horror really offers something diffrenet from the run of the mil stalk and slash fare. The story centres around a distressed teen who's hunted down and killed by a madman - the real horror is that the girl re-lives her own murder again and again, each time more horrifying than the last. The reason the film works so well is because of the stellar lead performance from Lauren Currie Lewis who is outstanding as the helpless victim who struggles to work out just what's happening to her. With a much higher dose of mail-biting tension rather than explicit gore (although the face-cutting scene proved a difficult watch!) Gruesome is a breath of fresh air into a largely stagnant genre. Highly recommended.
