2.0 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment, 4 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very disappointing DVD. The packaging led me to expect interesting video of the many attractions of Lucca accompanied by the music of Vivaldi. It is actually the opposite: the music of Vivaldi accompanied by not very distinguished videos and photos of the city. The visual side of this DVD could have come from any tourist’s video camera. It seems to have been assembled to fit the timing of the music: on at least three occasions, a scene from an earlier “chapter” appears in a later one. I also lost count of the number of shots of drying clothes hanging out of windows.

Musically, the DVD is on safer ground with enjoyable performances well recorded, but the whole effect is of a silent movie with musical accompaniment. None of the scenes has any location sound, and this gives an oddly remote feel to what we see, especially in the chapter at the covered market, which is busy and lively – but totally silent! With the exception of that segment, people are quite a rare sight, mostly appearing individually, and seeming to have inadvertently strayed across the scene while it was being filmed.

I visited Lucca briefly in 2011, and am heading back there in May 2016, knowing that it is an historic and fascinating place that needs to be explored in depth. This DVD does it no favours at all, and would probably deter most people from visiting if they had no other knowledge of the city.

Naxos has an outstanding reputation with its classical music CDs, restorations of historical jazz recordings, and many other projects: its Naxos Audiobooks series of the great classics of English literature are the benchmark by which I judge all others. Unfortunately, it has dropped the ball on this foray into DVD travelogues!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Gem!, 10 Jan. 2015

This is a wonderful program! The humour and storyline (which runs through all six episodes) are quintessentially English, as are the characters. It's gentle, and unhurried, but with a script that is intelligent and witty: we will certainly watch it again, because I'm sure we'll pick up references and "jokes" that we missed the first time. The actors are all pitch perfect, presenting characters that are instantly recognizable as people we have all encountered at some point in our lives.

I suspect this may be a one-off series as there were no loose ends left hanging when episode six finished. Honestly, I can't see how a second series would be possible: "The Further Adventures of the Detectorists" just doesn't sound right, but if Mackenzie Crook, who wrote, directed, and stars in the show believes he can create a follow up to the same high standard, I'll be first in line for Series Two!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Series, 10 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A fascinating and well made series that covers many lesser known aspects of the First World War. Extensive use of contemporary footage adds to our understanding of the conditions that existed both on the battlefield and the home front. I learnt about several people who had a great affect on the war effort, but who are now largely unknown. Eric Geddes, for example, masterminded the transportation system for bringing supplies and ammunition to the front lines, but is now largely unknown.
I'm sure there was a great deal more equally interesting material that could have been included, but for which there was not enough time: if only each episode had been 45 or 50 minutes long......

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Film, Poor Disc, 21 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a wonderful recreation of Kenneth Williams, with Michael Sheen pitch perfect in the role and supported by a great cast. Unfortunately we were only able to watch three of the four chapters! As soon as the final section started, the image either temporarily froze or broke up, and then eventually stopped completely before returning to the very start of the film. I returned the DVD and was quickly sent a replacement, which unfortunately had exactly the same problem. I tried playing it on another player, with the same result. The Amazon customer service was excellent in trying to solve the problem, but it seems that it originates with the DVD's manufacturer.
So, although the film warranted a five start rating, the technical problems downgrades that to three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond Great, 26 Aug. 2013

An absolutely wonderful series with utterly believable, real characters, brought to life by outstanding acting from the stars all the way down to the many minor characters. I expect Broadchurch will deservedly win a raft of BAFTA awards, one of which must surely go to David Bradley as the town newsagent - a great performance!

5.0 out of 5 stars World Class, 26 Aug. 2013

I was fortunate enough to hear the Prague Brass Ensemble live in Prague this summer, and their brilliant playing blew me away. This CD just confirms what I thought then - they are a world class group. The programme is varied and wide ranging and very well recorded. As a bass trombone player I love that they include the instrument in place of the tuba! Any lover of brass music must hear this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Better on DVD than on BBC Canada!, 26 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I can only endorse all the other reviews in giving this final series a 5-star rating for acting, production and storylines. My main reason for this review is more about the cutting that obviously occurs when the show is broadcast on BBC Canada (and BBC America too?). The two episodes that comprise each case are normally shown back-to-back in consecutive one hour time slots. However, they are interrupted by commercial breaks that become more and more frequent as the end of each episode approaches. This obviously disrupts the flow of the storyline, and dissipates the building tension. But worse than this is that during a one hour episode I estimate commercials and trailers take up around ten minutes of that hour, and as each episode on the DVD runs at least 57 minutes, it's obvious that considerable cuts are made so that the program "fits" the allocated time. So, if you have a DVD player that is set up for All Regions, buy the DVDs and watch the show as it was originally produced. Incidentally, I believe PBS also indulges in similar editing practices.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Region Free, 12 May 2011

This is not a review of "The Great Rift", it's just a heads-up that my copy of this "Region Free" Blu-ray isn't! My player indicates it "cannot play this format" when I insert the disc. Other similar items ("Yellowstone" and "Wild China") have played perfectly! There's nothing on the box cover to indicate whether it's region free or region specific.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Historical Documentary, 3 Jan. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Queen Is Crowned [DVD] (DVD)
This is a wonderful record of a unique occasion. Anyone with an interest in the Monarchy and British History should own it.

To the two Canadian reviewers who complained about the DVD not being viewable - look at the product details section for the DVD. It states quite clearly that it is in PAL format, is for Region 2 and may not be viewable outside Europe. What more do you need? A one star review headed "Stinks" is not justified if the only problem with the product is the customer's inability to read simple information about it.
