worked straight out of the packaging. Bright blue light reminds you not to leave it on indefinitely. Good value - but lead a little short

3.0 out of 5 stars WHO EDITED IT?, 26 Jun. 2013

Presumably this was put together by language students in the Far East - because there are occasional dreadful spelling mistakes.

Have you ever read "the Copper Breeches"? Sounds like the title of a BBC spoof. Similar mistakes abound throughout.

Never mind, nothing can detract from the power of Conan Doyle's Victorian stories. I used to read them in the 50s in my bedroom, looking out across the roofs of Marylebone Station towards the tower of the Abbey National, which was thought then (mistakenly) to be 221b Baker Street. Happy days of childhood!

1.0 out of 5 stars CANNOT USE IT, 26 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I tried to download it and it sort of hung. The plays come up as a list, but when I tried to access them, I got the message that it was "not responding" or something like that.

I tried several times, because there were one or two I had never read "Timon of Athens", "Pericles" being the ones I selected - but it was hopeless, so I have mentally written off the 77p or whatever it was

1.0 out of 5 stars NO SHOW RABBIT, 13 Jun. 2013
I adore Bugs Bunny - the greatest American of the 20th Century. I fell in love with him on Sunday evenings in the 50s when my Dad took me to the local "news theatre" (remember them?)at Baker St Station to see Bugs (and Pathe News and The Three Stooges or Abbott and Costello and Sylvester and Tweetie Pie).

So when Amazon promised to reunite us after 50 long, lonely years, and for only £7.00 - well, I was almost in tears of happiness.

You will realise I was heartbroken when Bugs never arrived. Well, I found out today that Bugs meant to, it was just meany old Amazon wouldn't let him.

Shame on you Amazon.

Enoch at 100: A Re-evaluation of the life, politics and philosophy of Enoch Powell
Enoch at 100: A Re-evaluation of the life, politics and philosophy of Enoch Powell

5.0 out of 5 stars The seer who predicted the disaster, 14 April 2013

Enoch Powell would no more have been an effective Prime Minister than would Keith Joseph. But both were gifted with formidable, scholarly, intellects, a clear view of the role of the state and a commitment to the moral dimension of politics.

In the week of Margaret Thatcher's funeral we can see their influence on her, the only post-war leader capable of preventing the mess into which we falling. Keith Joseph gave an all too accurate forecast of the results of the "benefit society" on working class society. Powell anticipated the undermining of the British nation state and its authority by the European "project" (which is turning into a German dominion). Both were savaged and excoriated for their predictions. Both have been proved to be correct.

Powell's was seen to be the more outrageous (because "racist") statement, the "Rivers of Blood" speech seeming more provocative than it actually was (particularly perhaps to non-classicists -99% of the population). Joseph, equally inaccurately, was thought to be sneering at the working class, or a eugenecist attack on it. The Left could easily smear both and the traditional Tory patriarchs resumed their normal practice of throwing the "middling sort" off the sledge to distract and appease the ravenous wolves behind.

This collection of essays on Powell shows that he was emphatically not racist, but appreciated that unrestricted immigration (without - be it noted - asking for or obtaining the consent of those most affected) would profoundly change British society.

Powell had many sides. Formidable academic and scholar, keen linguist, he could also see, while others ignored it, the nature of the community which nationhood brings - the "us" - and which is being deliberately distorted and destroyed by undemocratic politicians. He could also see that the inflexible iron bands of this pseudo European empire (like the Soviet one) will so offend the long-established national awareness of the various subordinate states, that the resulting collapse becomes more certain, not less.

Black Tide (Jack Irish Thriller Book 2)
Black Tide (Jack Irish Thriller Book 2)

4.0 out of 5 stars Black Tide, with Jack Irish, 28 Jan. 2013

Gripping - and, more importantly, credible. Peter Temple can hold two or three different facets of the "hero's" life together in a consistent and believable way. So Jack Irish is a (former) lawyer, a part-time cabinet maker and has a private life consisting of horse-racing coups, an absent lover, a dead wife and a much loved daughter. All of this has a "back story" and, as in a good recipe, they add flavour to the book rather than clashing. Melbourne too is part of the story as a great city with a seamy underside (well, all cities) and even its variable climate adds to the flavour.

Possibly the best thriller series since Martin Cruz-Smith's Arkady Renko dropped down the ratings with "Three Stations".

A really good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Could be a life saver, 3 Dec. 2011

I had been experiencing bouts of fatigue which my GP said could be partly due to low blood pressure, so I bought the Omron monitor to check myself.

Very easy to use, other than trying to fit the sleeve one handed. Instructions are clear and simple - as is the display. It saves the readings, but I enter them on a spreadsheet. It only takes three minutes before my morning shower.

I asked my wife to try it one morning - good thing too!. Her reading was 200 over 110. She had been told that she had "cluster headaches" and was prescribed painkillers.

Her GP had not given her a blood pressure test. She was in great potential danger of stroke and was totally unaware of it.

This inexpensive gadget may have averted a domestic tragedy for us. A better gift than a DVD box-set in my opinion. A lot to gain for so little money.

Seagate 500GB Expansion Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive
Seagate 500GB Expansion Portable USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable and could have been catastrophic, 14 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this Seagate 500 GB extension drive from Amazon in September 2011 and and for several months it performed well - easy to use, prompt backup using "memeo" and I felt my vital data was safe.

Then, just over a month before the warranty expired, the drive light started to blink intermittently and the drive ceased to register as "F:Drive" on "My Computer" directory. It then reappeared and then disappeared in an intermittent and repeating process.

"Autoplay" and the flashlight icon appeared at top left of screen moving through files. And stopping. And re-starting. Next came a message saying "Windows - Delayed Write Failed" with the explanation "Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F: (file name and extension).........The data has been lost (!).

This was truly frightening, because this extension drive guarded copies of my most important data - family records and photographs, investment and tax information - the lot. So I then attached the drive to another desktop PC to check its function. The same faults.

I returned the drive to Amazon with an explanation of the problems and a copy of my original invoice. Amazon customer service was excellent and refunded the purchase price to my account. No more Seagate for me! I will now use two extension drives, backing up the first to the second. "To make assurance doubly sure...." as some clever clogs said.

4.0 out of 5 stars HP ink cartridges, 12 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have tried remanufactured own-label ink cartridges from major supermarket chains and had to return them because they smeared. But original HP 21s and 22s are expensive (we run two printers). So the Amazon deal of two packs for only just over the store price of one was a very good deal.

Cartridges fine - value excellent

4.0 out of 5 stars Freecom Toughdrive 500GB, 30 April 2011

Compact, damage resistant and with a large capacity this "Toughdrive" is good value for someone who wants reliable back-up of important files in a portable format.

Many home users and small businesses would be in real trouble if the PC/laptop were lost by theft, water damage or in a fire. Worried about losing the insurance policy numbers/tax receipts/bank statements and kids' photos? The advantage of the Toughdrive is that it is easy to use (straight to USB port) and slips into your pocket. So regular back up of files is simple and you can take it home every night, or write your home files to it and, in an emergency, all your personal data is safe

No external power supply needed, this is a really smart product at a good price
