The Piano: Music From The Motion Picture
The Piano: Music From The Motion Picture
Price: £5.99

4.0 out of 5 stars The Piano, orchestral pieces a bit smoochy., 5 Sept. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The piano music is excellent on this CD though only just over half the 20 pieces are actually feature the piano, which is the nature of the film soundtrack I suppose. If you like smoochy film music the orchestral pieces are typical of the genre. Maybe I'll watch the film someday.

Obliquity: Why our goals are best achieved indirectly
Obliquity: Why our goals are best achieved indirectly
by John Kay
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting idea, gets rather muddled., 19 July 2017
Listened on Tracklist Audiobook read by Ric Jerrom who unfortunately lacks an engaging reading style for this book. Like some other reviewers, I got through the first 5 chapters or so with the best of goodwill and thought:OK, got that, learned something, but can't take any more of the same disorganised story. Life is too short. The book offers a selection of examples of real world successes and failures which have some resonance with the central obliquity thesis though there is mission creep and achieving business success becomes synonymous with achieving personal happiness, I think the latter had a completely different audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Morphy Richards Cooker, handy for the smaller hob., 13 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good for smaller meals, it fits easily on the hob unlike bigger 5L ones. The pressure is a bit lower than bigger P cookers: 0.7 bar rather than 1 bar so cooking times need to be extended by a couple of minutes but adding in the startup time to get the pressure release operating, it doesn't make any difference. The lid can be hung on a hook by a hole in the rim, but a simple slot in the plastic handle would have been better.

Kaspersky Total Security 2016 Multi Device 5 Device 1 Year (PC DVD/Mac)

5.0 out of 5 stars Kaspersky - still good, 13 Mar. 2017

Kapersky gets good reviews and doesn't slow things. I have it installed on Win10, Win7, and Vista PC's. On installation it wants to download the latest version (150-odd MB) which is just as fast as using it straight off by the time the data files are loaded.

sourcingmap® Digital Multimeter LCD Inductor Inductance Capacitance Testers LC Multi Tester Meter
sourcingmap® Digital Multimeter LCD Inductor Inductance Capacitance Testers LC Multi Tester Meter

4.0 out of 5 stars sourcingmap LC meter. AKA Uyigao 6243, 13 Mar. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
sourcingmap LC meter. Uyigao UA6243. a bit more expensive than similar LC meters but it offers extended ranges of 2000uF and 2mH. The former useful for loudspeaker crossover circuits. Works fine on all ranges with test frequency of 200Hz for all inductor ranges and 200Hz, 20Hz and 10 Hz for capacitance. Display updates 3x per second. Separate moulded flexible outer red case with a stand.
Resolution of 1pf on 2mF range and 1uH on 2mH range: small RF coils and capacitors are easily measured.
Cons: the 9v zinc-carbon battery was flat on arrival but not corroded and easy to replace without removing the outer case, but one star lost The supplied pointy-style probes are pretty useless for connecting to components. The manual is 100% inscrutable Chinese characters, but not much in it anyway apart from the specs.

The Man in the High Castle (Penguin Modern Classics)
The Man in the High Castle (Penguin Modern Classics)
Price: £4.99

3.0 out of 5 stars High Castle - a bit eccentric, 27 Feb. 2017
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Loved the slang of the period and the no-holds-barred private attitudes of different races to each other. How much of the writer's own personality is hidden in the rather fraught inner mental processes that he describes, which are like the scripts of the psychological American and Hitchcock noir films of the 1940's and 50's.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very easy way for iPads to access your PC music files., 26 Jan. 2017
I got this a couple of years ago from another source. This personal WiFi hotspot gives an easy non-technical way to play your own PC's MP3 files on an iPad without copyright problems, something that Apple strenuously try to stop you doing. They want to go through their music store or you can use Amazon tunes otherwise.
Upload MP3's into it from the PC's USB slot then log on with your iPad's WiFi and that's it. No more problems. Battery seems to last for 12 hours or so, so if you're flying it will last all the way. Worth five stars but the human interface is a bit clunky at first and instructions are minimalist. Haven't tried video yet.

The Professor of Truth
The Professor of Truth
by James Robertson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Good build up in the first half, runs out of steam toward the end., 4 Dec. 2016
This review is from: The Professor of Truth (Paperback)
I actually listened to this as the audio book. Good build up in the first half, real atmosphere of academic life and sad loss of his family in a plane explosion, thinly disguised from the Lockerbie event, and an obsessive goal of separating the truth from a bungled legal process. The first half sets up for a good mystery later on. Or so we think. Then he flies to Australia, the plot so far pointing to whole world of intriguing possibilities, like being tailed and 'disappeared' by Mossad or the CIA, but as a fiction narrative it runs out of steam at this point. He drinks too much, has communication problems with the Australian locals, burns his hands in a bush fire, talks to a man and err... that's it. The unexpected twists and reversals of the story don't seem to happen. So four stars for part one, one star for part two.

The Best Of Carly Simon
The Best Of Carly Simon
Price: £3.49

5.0 out of 5 stars Music circa 1970, the real deal., 29 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The acoustics are brilliant on this collection: Carly's mellow voice and the accompanying percussion. This was made an era before synthesisers and music-making got a bit too technical. The lyrics are very pointed and might make you squirm a bit. Again something that we've lost over the decades.
