4.0 out of 5 stars Footsteps of a brilliant biographer, 7 Oct. 2013

The only problem with this book is the poor quality and sparsity of the illustrations. In fact the content, which is superb, was really let down by the physical production of this edition — too small, poor type-face, very hard to read — though worth it for Holmes' inspired writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than series 1, 17 April 2012

These three episodes are all so good that they would require several viewings to fully appreciate all the subtleties. They represent an entirely new level of achievement in television, and set a standard to which I hope others will aspire. In the meantime I await Series 3 with barely controlled anticipation.

The short series 'Sherlock' is, I hope, to be continued in a longer series. The whole concept is imaginative both dramatically and technically. Cumberbatch is superb. The creative talent behind this series (Gatiss, Moffat) were (are) also much involved with Dr Who, so no wonder it has that elusive quality which appeals to all ages and condescends to none.

5.0 out of 5 stars Literature and slavery, 23 July 2009

I was particularly interested in this book as in three of the five chapters it gives a masterly account of the significance of the colonialism's effect on the works of Charlotte and Emily BrontŽ. Fascinating and revelatory. Was Heathcliff black? Very likely.
