Got to be honest: my main reason for buying this set was to have a copy of The Rebel. The other film is a little bleaker - but The Rebel is one of the smartest and funniest British comedy films period. A brilliant script, a remarkable central performance from the great Tony Hancock, and a host of well-cast supporting actors including John Le Mesurier and Irene Handl, with George Sanders turning in a silky performance as a suave art dealer. In a nutshell, it sharply pokes fun at the absurdity and pretentiousness of the art world, with Hancock as a particularly bad amateur painter and sculptor, who quits his 9-5 job and heads to Paris to become a professional artist. There, as a result of a mis-understanding, he is catapulted to fame, becoming the art world's the most feted new 'discovery'. The script crackles with great ideas, satire and wonderful comic lines - and a few great visual gags too. The performances are terrific: Tony Hancock is brilliant: funny naturally, but with occasional touches of pathos too. Irene Handl is terrific as his landlady, getting some of the best lines - her scenes with Hancock near the beginning of the film, as he shows her some of his work are a real treat. Dennis Price turns up as a bizzare Dali-type artist, and even a young Oliver Reed outs in an appearance. A brilliant, classic British comedy. Highly recommended. Plus it comes with another film, and only cost a fiver. What's not to like?
