I cannot approve of Cathy Bates kidnapping novelists in Colorado, and then killing classic 1980s franchises... OOOH, Abby Yates? Well now I don't know which woman is more evil

I was playing this game with my good friends Ben Garrison and George Zimmerman and it's amazing fun. After assembling the well made pieces and decks on the beautifully crafted board, we set to work making sure the North would become culturally enriched. Easy rules and great fun

1.0 out of 5 stars Teen Titans vs Quality Control, 16 April 2016
DCAU continues to ram Damian Wayne down our throats, and make him as unlikeable as ever. Be he destroying the Batwing, almost ramming a sword through Beast Boy's skull, giving grief to his elders without retaliation, or picking fights with team mates who could all rolfstomp him, this midget Bruce Wayne is as unlikeable as ever.

He is joined by a Raven with no personality or ability to voice act. Seriously, I'm not clinging to Tara Strong here, but whoever they elected to do the voice of Raven was dull as dishwater. Beast Boy's so mentally stupid he cannot remember to put clothes on, and Blue Beetle, though a stronger point of the team, is woefully under used.

Trigon's the big bad in this fight, but all he does is walk slowly through Cairo (or somewhere) and fire a few eyebeams. The Justice League vs Teen Titans fight lasts all of a couple of minutes, and as always, Batman and Damien trump all. About on par with Son of Batman (yes it's that bad).

On the plus side, animation is decent, colours are great, and the Justice League actors all give their usual solid performance.

A beautiful and haunting soundtrack showcasing the haunting aftermath of unrestrained power. The worlds are beautifully scored with this CD, and I am proud to add it to my collection. Alas it lacks that Robyn Miller touch, making it inferior to Riven or Myst's OSTs

The rules are unbalanced, the scenarios poorly structered, and the 3 player vs dynamic does not work. The only reason I give 2 stars is for the beautiful miniatures, which rival anything put out by the likes of Games Workshop. Sadly, the game alongside it is atrocious. The customer service from the producers isn't so pleasant either

2.0 out of 5 stars Sachiko we beg of you... fix this game!, 22 Oct. 2015
As a fan of the first two Corpse Party games, I have been waiting forever for this title to drop. Sadly, the third and finale part of the Heavenly Host saga is a lacklustre experience.

Firstly, the story, though rich and filled with twists and turns, has lost a lot of its horrific nature. People come and go to Heavenly Host for some of the most nonsensical reasons, often ill-prepared. The time it takes to get us into the school, and to find convoluted reasons for everyone to arrive, often means the story keeps leaping from the juicy action in the school, to bright modern day Tokyo. This wouldn't be so bad, save that it ruins the claustrophobic feel of the school, and the impossibility to escape. The pacing is so terrible, and if you're a veteran of the first 2 games, anticipate way more text to exposit and explain the previous games, just to justify where we are now. I think I found the most haunting scene to be the apartment building in chapter 0... or was it 1? Either way, it wasn't Heavenly Host.

Next come the characters. The roster of performers in this grim tale has expanded to display a wardrobe that defies logic. We have a long, blonde haired, chibi wielding a scythe, an occultist dressed in more drapes than a curtain store, a white-haired teacher who can call in a secret-service esque supply drop just to bring Satoshi a meal. I don't expect a game like Corpse Party to be grounded in reality, but this helps to destroy the tense atmosphere found in Book of Shadows and Corpse Party 1. Despite the illogical actions of illogical characters, the voice acting is as always enthralling, and helps to convey the horror of the characters involved. Though the chibi dolls are so disjointed from the terror of Heavenly Host, the drawing/images seem sharper than ever.

Another let down was the bad ends. Do you remember Ayumi bashing Naomi's head in with a rock? Do you remember Naomi cutting out her own tongue with a pair of scissors? Do you remember Ayumi being eaten, Yuka having her head caved in with a rock? Yui Shishido hiding in a school locker from Yoshie only for her to compress it into something the size of a rubix cube? Well, they're all gone now. Now a ghost slaps you and the screen goes red. In fact, you need to see the bad end in chapter 2 to believe it. Part of the fun in this game was failing, but that too has been taken away.

Worst of all comes the technical side. Anticipate slow frame rates, dodgy lighting, jittery animations. Your characters tire so quickly and the floors are so cluttered with traps, trying to explore the school becomes tedious. The game also likes to give few clues on where to progress next, so prepare to circle the same few rooms for hours on end, looking for keys in places you already checked two scenes ago. I guess Heavenly Host went meta, and is trying to drive the players insane.

On the plus side.... well, lets see. This game first of all looks beautiful. The effort to bring it up from 8Bit Sprites up to a rich and colourful 3D world is perfect. I just wish there was a way to rotate the camera to appreciate that world. You'll find a few pitfalls and spikes concealed by the restrictive camera angle. The way characters interact with each other is superb as well. As I mentioned, the voice actors give it their all, and some of the story is expanded upon brilliantly. Later on, the stakes are increased to a great level with some surprise twists and turns.

The game is also a good length, and boasts a superb soundtrack. Tension builds nicely when the script finally allows it, and the use of headphones can really pull one into the school. In short however, I am so sad to say it, but have to be honest with myself, Corpse Party Blood Drive was a poor finish to the franchise.

2.0 out of 5 stars Super Boy Where Did It All Go Wrong, 22 Feb. 2015

Although I was starting to warm to Superboy, the problem with this book is two fold. Firstly, the numerous crossovers slow down the story immensely, making half of it just unreadable. Superboy crosses with the Teen Titans, the Legion Lost, Superman, and Ravagers material, requiring you to be clued up on all their arcs. Secondly, even when he's doing his own thing, he seems second fiddle, and a support character to those aforementioned groups, with no solid direction or aim for himself. He just moans about Harvest and N.O.W.H.E.R.E a lot. Wasted potential.

1.0 out of 5 stars Godzilla? More like God Awful, 21 Oct. 2014
Normally I only give one star to something deeply offensive or horrifically bad, but sometimes, rarely, I unleash the proverbial beast of bitterness within me to combat something so sneaky and devious as the 2014 movie of Godzilla.

Where do we begin? Lets start with the obvious one: the acting talent. Ken Watanabe and Brian Cranston are our heavy hitters in this field, but Ken is quickly resorted to cliché lines like "let them fight each other" with a look of awe on his face, whilst studying seismology readings like holy scriptures. Meanwhile, Cranston is given barely enough screen time to establish himself, but even that limited time before the camera is the best thing about this movie. Everything else descends into the usual look of panicked navy officials, and the typical soldier separated from his family.

The biggest offensiveness this movie can provide comes from the combat scenes. Godzilla dukes it out against a huge birdlike creature that can emit EMP blasts. This is convenient because it means the creature will always be poorly lit, and they can cut down on the budget of having the US military battle it.

When it does come to a big showdown with Godzilla, they do a glorious bait and switch by cutting to a news broadcast of the fight, before someone turns off the tv mistaking it for a cartoon. So the first fight abruptly ends, and we never find out how or why the two monsters separate. Likewise, the same treatment is given to the destruction of Las Vegas: we hear footsteps, we see casinos, and BANG, trail of devastation shown on the news again.

This sin becomes a holy trinity when during the third duel, we see the monsters square off from the perspective of a survivor in a fallout shelter, but just as the monsters prepare to battle, the doors close. During this scene I can only presume the two monsters wandered off and agreed to meet back later.

By the final duel it's clear why this battle was so long in coming; the monsters are slow, stiff, and boring. Nothing like Pacific Rim. Whatever you can say about this movie, if you've seen the trailer, you've seen the best parts. I would sorely give it a miss.

2.0 out of 5 stars How the mighty have fallen, 28 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Despite some great jokes, and some incredible characters and interactions, this game has gone the way of Scary Movie. Desperate to cover its own lack of substance with an endless string of references and parodies, we see the Saints transported to a grotesque and garish looking virtual reality realm. The graphics look dire, and deliberately carry this pixilating effect to create the illusion of living in a false world. Gangs and police officers have been replaced by aliens, and cars are now redundant thanks to Superpowers that allow you to outrun any vehicle. All in all, this title feels rushed as though desperate to cut GTA V off at the post.

+ Funny
+ Controls handle well

- Graphics are poor
- Unrecognizable as a Saints Row game
- Repetitive missions
