4.0 out of 5 stars New i-Pad cover success, 5 Jan. 2016

The cover arrived well ahead of the scheduled delivery date and is a very handsome item. My i-Pad 4 is a little loose but inserting a pen down the right outer edge of the cover had the effect of holding it more firmly in place and the whole thing will provide very safe protection when travelling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slightly let down, 28 July 2015

Much lauded in recent Sunday newspaper which is why I decided to give it a go, but found it a little disappointing. The main character's narrative seemed to be rather disjointed at times, but maybe this was as a result of things being lost in translation. I will give the next volume a try and hope that it will prove more satisfactory.

3.0 out of 5 stars A strange piece of work, 3 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The basic premise of this book is interesting but would have been much better served by a good editor. The narrative was full of great clunking discords created by poor English - it read like something translated from another language whose native tongue was not English either. The fact that both major characters were apparently able to communicate with each other in English when they met in San Francisco, even although neither of them had ever spoken it before stretched ones credulity somewhat as well, though the bizarre constructions might have been forgivable in that context.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating tale of ancient Egypt, 7 Sept. 2014

Very different from the Phryne Fisher novels, but none the less interesting for that. Well constructed so that the research does not dominate the narrative as happens with several authors who seem intent on proclaiming what clever people they are to have uncovered the underlying historical data.

A fascinating glimpse of an, apparently, little-known cultural characteristic among the women of certain areas of China which survived until relatively recently. Lisa See develops her characters and brings them to life in a way that keeps you hooked until the final page

Interesting insight into Chinese culture and survival strategies. Well researched and well written.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not going to add to my favourites list, 5 July 2014

Still struggling with the character of the 'detective' in this convoluted tale, not to mention the rest of the dramatist personae. She is not someone with whom I can easily empathise and the basic premise of the murder and its setting is just bizarre. I would not be tempted to delve into number 3 in the series if/when it is published.

3.0 out of 5 stars First experience of this series, 5 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Quirky - and not always in a good way - main character cast as the detective made it difficult to get into the story and rather jarring that a Scottish author is referring to her fellow countrymen as 'Scotch', a word usually reserved for the stuff that comes out of a bottle or used in this context by people who don't know any better

4.0 out of 5 stars New experience for me, 19 Jun. 2014

I downloaded this book based on some others I had read by the same author in the 'Daisy Dalrymple' series and hadn't realised that I was stepping into the 'romance' genre, otherwise I might not have chosen it. I did, however, enjoy it as it was, like the other series, well researched and well constructed and contained none of the crass descriptions so often encountered in such novels.
I am not likely to become an ardent follower of this series, but might dip into from time to time if I am looking for a bit of escapism.
