The Clockwork Vampire Chronicles
The Clockwork Vampire Chronicles

4.0 out of 5 stars A good trilogy overall, let down by a rushed 3rd act..., 10 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
*spoilers contained*

I've got to state here that the 1st and 2nd books in the trilogy are brilliant. There seems to be some criticism in some of the other reviews that these series lacks originality. I'd actually beg to differ and the vachine (a amalgamation of part sentient clockwork + vampire) are something I personally haven't come across in a fantasy novel before and they are rather fascinating creation.

The author I'd hazard a guess is something of a George Martin fan and to warn you kills off a few characters in a rather offhand manner or leaves certain story arcs/characters not really going anywhere and giving a satisfactory resolution - Vashnell & Anukis are 2 such characters. There are several points where you are just left thinking 'so why was that part even in the book' - for example the 'ship of metal' a slave proposes can be created with general Graal in the third book, never even materialises in any way shape or form.

The third book in the trilogy is where things really start to fall down - its not a bad/terrible book by any means but is the weakest of the three, purely due to a common trend I'm noticing of authors trying to cram too much in to what's clearly not enough pages and you can see too many story threads are being rushed. In all honesty the vampire warlords introduced towards the end of book 2 are really very off handedly dealt with by the end of the third book.

At the end of the day the series just needed to either have more pages to resolve things in a more satisfactory manner or should have even been 4 books...there's a lot of material that could have even carried on into the next trilogy and introduced new things as it went along. I'm sure Andy Remic would have learnt from this, and look forward to seeing adventures are in store for Kell the Legend in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing looking jacket, 12 May 2013
This is really amazing looking jacket. The colouring is a very rich & deep red, with a slight marbling to give it more of a 'antiqued' look. It fits my frame very nicely & is very comfortable to wear.

The interior of the jacket is lined vertically with blue & white cotton(which isnt shown in the product photos.)

Only small criticism of the jacket is the top pockets are a little shallower than I'm used to. To give you an idea, your not going to be able to put a ipod touch with the headphones attached in the pocket & then be able to close it off fully afterwards. Its only a minor gripe though, and the lower & internal pockets are absolutely more than generous in the space area.

To give you an idea of the sizing, I'm 5'6 and ordered a large - it fits me fine, though the sleeves are a little too long by a 1-1.5"(I prefer the length though on me personally.)

Very happy with this purchase and I'd recommend it if your looking for something a bit different to the norm colour wise for a jacket such as this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Room for improvement..., 11 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First thing to stress this is only a short story and not a sci-fi war & peace. I've given this a 3 being 'Its OK' as I really dont feely strongly one way or another about the story. Whilst its clearly the first part of a series of shorts, set in the same universe its lacking a certain oomph. Partly for me this is due to reading a number of very descriptive sci-fi & fantasy novels in the past that really made me feel I was in the world the author is trying to sculpt. It could be just the fact its a short story and I need to spend more time with the world when the future books are out for it to grow on me.

The ending I found frustrating as there wasn't much of a hint or hook of what the main protagonist was actually seeing to react in the way he does in the end. Theres no 'my god everyone is dead Jim', you literally dont have the slightest idea what's being seen.

The format of the e-book itself has the occasional spelling error, and some of the spacing comes out a bit squiffy a default kindle size screen, though its nothing detrimental to the story.

All in all a a very positive first attempt and hopeful to see good things from the author down the line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Watch, 22 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have a taste for slightly unusual or quirky looking watches and this immediately caught my eye. The picture on honestly doesn't do it justice- the inner parts along the with the small black arrows are infact silver as per the strap, not the washed out white-grey as in the picture on the item page. The watch is suitably weighty and while its a little odd at first telling the time looking from right to left, you soon adapt. The central multi-coloured part of the watch is actually the seconds 'disc'(hand) and is a interesting feature due to the multi-coloured lines constantly rotating. For those with slim wrists, you may have to remove a couple of the links, though you really can't fault the manufacturer for that! Very happy with this purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuinely sinister post-apocalyptic story - can't recommend enough, 12 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Recently purchased this on a whim after the book synopsis hooked me. Absolutely loved every(electronic)page of this book. I had genuine chills when reading through - the idea of being completely isolated & alone after everyone you know and the world you knew ceases to be in a matter of days is genuinely thought provoking. What would you do to survive? Would you have the strength to survive when that former world you knew starts to warp and change around you to something sinister & alien?

This is, in my oppinion a very original take on the post-apocalyptic survival genre, that leaves you with plenty at the end to want the next 2(possibly 3) books to have been out yesterday.

I can level a small criticism about the actual writing in parts of the book where it repeats or re-iterates something that was already said a couple of pages ago but it is only a very minor criticism and does not detract from the experience.

P.S. I also give added kudos to the author, as while reading a certain section, the lights are described as 'going out' in a certain location and 30 seconds later at work in the real world after reading that the lights did genuinely go out...

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended - military sci-fi, 15 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
While feeling in the mood for a new sci-fi read on my Kindle I came across this, surprisingly good read. The reason I say surprisingly, is typically I wouldn't impulse buy. A few of the already posted reviews, provided the extra push to purchase this e-book and I'm very glad I did.

*Minor story spoilers*

The book is a sci-fi action book, focusing on a ongoing battle between 'Biotics' (gooey, flesh bags like me and you) and the 'Macros.' While it may sound like your fairly standard affair, there are some interesting takes on the genre with the inclusion of the 'Nanos' - 'Sort of friendly(debatable)' defenders of biotics. The Nanos come to earth, and their first task is to recruit command personnel to command...well them, to ultimately provide a defence against the 'Macros'.

It sounds complicated, but its really demonstrated & presented in a very straight forward understandable way. The whole book is easy to read and it has that 'Just one more chapter' effect in some parts. After finishing it I promptly purchased the next 2 books in the series, and I'm looking forward to the 4th.

A couple of criticisms that have made me give this a 4, instead of a 5 - There is something of a lack of explanation for various things that occur which is a flaw present throughout all the books so far. (e.g. By the end of book 3, we still only really know a relatively small amount of info about the Macros.)

Also some of the character emotions/responses to events around them are almost a bit stilted. Without giving too much away, the main character, Kyle Riggs, ultimately seems rather detached after a rather personal traumatic event happens early on in the first book. There are some brief mentions of this event further on in the books, while it's possible it can be argued, Kyle Riggs is being swept along by events beyond his control there is just some emotional oomph missing.

Also the character of Sandra, while changing slightly in the 3rd book, remains a 'sexy-pouty-crazy-angry' lady throughout. I wouldn't say this is neccesarily a bad thing but her presence can on occasion grate a little.

Overall I'd highly recommend this book to those looking for military sci-fi fix.

4.0 out of 5 stars No idea why this is under games!, 19 April 2011
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this cleaner, purely to keep my PS3 all spic and spam. Really straight forward- just pop the disc in the PS3, navigate to the Disc through the dvd menu and listen to the cheesy american lady tell you about dust build up and how brilliant the Disc is at sorting it. Took about a minute to run the disc cleaning process.

The Sound calibration element of the disc simply does a variety of tests on your speakers to check they are all plugged in properly, tone tests and the like. Its worth mentioning that it doesn't really 'calibrate' anything - if there is a problem with the sound or anything it tells you to check the connections and/or get the speaker/sound system professionally checked. Its good for trouble shooting though if you think there is a problem with the speakers somewhere.

The Video calibration simply consists of changing your TV brightness/contrast settings etc, not really any different to the kind of prompt you get at the beginning of most PS3 games these days (e.g. Adjust brightness until you can barely see such a such a colour/graphic on the screen.)

I would say that if your Disc drive is already having errors, by all means give this a try but its essentially a disc with small brushes on and not some kind of magical sony technician that will sort out a messed up machine. Don't give it negative press because if it doesnt wonder fix everything, the idea of lens cleaners is to stop your tech getting such errors and problems in the first place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finish him!, 8 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This soundtrack is a rather eclectic mix of tracks here encorporating a Mix of Electro, Trance, Dance, Dub-step and some light industrial elements. The previews don't really do the songs or soundtrack as a whole justice, and would suggest having a listen to the tracks on youtube first to get a better idea of the subtle tempo & song changes that kick in throughout the tracks.

There are some nice MK soundbytes dropped throughout the tracks (Such as Shao Khans laugh for example.) My personal favourite tracks on the album are Mileena, Reptile, Goro and Baraka's themes.

After a couple of listens, the music has really grown on me, but I must stress this won't be in everyones taste-some of the songs can be a little 'beepy' in places. If your a MK fan or just a fan of the soundtrack's genre of music then you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bit of something for every kind of sci-fi fan, 21 Dec. 2010
Having recently subscribed to this magazine, I cannot stress enough that the stories in Asimov really do cater for all kinds of Science Fiction fans. The variety and subject matter of the stories are often brilliant, touching all the base's from futuristic far out high-tech, 'realistic' upcoming potential future tech, the metaphysical and the downright bizzare.

While you may not enjoy all of the stories in a particular issue, you will enjoy the majority. For the price, your definitely getting your monies worth each month if your a fan of the genre. Really can't recommend enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you like the smell of ozone..., 25 Oct. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having purchased this charger for my creative Zen-xfi2, I thought 'great no more need to always charge it up using my laptop/ps3.' I used it for the first time today, and it did seem to work-the rediculously bright green light came on and my MP3 player started to charge up...

After 20 minutes though, I heard a weird crackly sound, followed by the smell of ozone-yup you guessed it, the charger had shorted and is now useless after a whole 20 minutes of use. I use the particular wall socket for various electrics and not had anything else short out on me like that, thus the socket isn't to blame, the product is. Very disappointed.

I won't be buying a replacement needless to say.
