5.0 out of 5 stars Great transition from WW2 to Cold War, 2 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Foyle's War - Series 8 [DVD] (DVD)
This is apparently the last in the series as the production costs were deemed to be too high. It's a crying shame as there was so much potential for Foyle to evolve in a new type of war. Having said that, each episode did seem to evolve around someone in high places being a traitor, so that could possibly have become repetitive. Superb acting from the main and supporting cast. The extras are very enjoyable, showing, for example, where the series was filmed and the buildings used as substitutes for public buildings in London.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it tremendously!, 2 Jun. 2016

Very wacky plots, raunchy dialogue and great performances. The leading cast who were imitating the Mancunian accent were easier to understand than the native McCoys! Diction these days doesn't seem to be a prime consideration in the acting field. I do hope there is a follow up to this first series, although the underlying plot, the murder of the Down's Syndrome girls, has been solved.

Wallander - Series 1-3 [DVD] [2008]
Wallander - Series 1-3 [DVD] [2008]

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 1 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Brilliant, I thought Kenneth Branagh renders Wallander very well - a man with a lot of personal problems, unable to communicate emotionally with his family. The monotonous landscape and the music also contribute to the dour mood of the series. I thoroughly enjoyed the extras especially the interviews with Mankell which give a good insight into Swedish society and the period in which the series takes place.
I look forward to buying series 4 and my only regret is that it is going to be the final one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still enjoyable, 24 Oct. 2015

The series still has its charm although the loss of Sara Martins is a blow. Her replacement doesn't quite fit the bill - spends too much time posing as opposed to acting. Fidel's replacement is much better and is a good foil to Duane. Thank God that Harry the lizard is still on the pay roll!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing., 24 Oct. 2015

A bit of a B film I thought. The storyline wasn't very clear (too bitty), quite often the dialogue wasn't either (lack of diction or too broad an accent). It could have been better so perhaps the fault lies with the director.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love DCI Banks, 23 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love DCI Banks. Ok, we have gone on from impersonal police officers (Dixon of Dock Green) to fashionable intrusion of private lives into the investigation. People are not wooden. However, one wonders how these guys have time to solve crimes with their personal lives in the foreground. DCI Banks is first confronted with his brother's murder, next his daughter is kidnapped and then his mother dies. DS Annie Cabot is first pregnant and won't say who the father is, then he turns out to be a lawyer involved in a murder investigation and finally there's all the aggro of will she end up with Banks. If not enough, we have DI Morton's son imprisoned, her marriage on the rocks and her extra-marital liaison with an undercover agent. Although the series is very well crafted, I find the number of personal problems a bit OTT.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thin storyline, 5 Sept. 2014

Not a bad western, but certainly not a thriller as we know who the murderer is from the start and who the justiciar is in the place of the sheriff. The storyline is a bit thin quite frankly. I wouldn't have written the script quite like that. Reminds me of the Clint Eastwood westerns where the good guy goes round meteing out justice. The ending was a bit disappointing. Good performances from Ed Harris and Jason Isaacs. January Jones reminds me somehow of Nicole Kidman. I liked the theme music.

2.0 out of 5 stars starting to devious towards seriously weird, 10 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First off I had a technical problem with the DVD. First disk started to stick after 15" and second part of story on same disk just wouldn't work so I returned the DVD. The other parts of the DVD did work and I can see why the series wasn't renewed.
The stories start to get away from the original idea of copycat murders or lessons derived from historical murders and starts to waft towards the weird. The lighting defects, the strange old woman, use of medium, etc, one can see the script writers starting to flounder. I can't see viewers wanting repeated flashing lights, it just distracts from the story at hand. Not their best effort.
