2.0 out of 5 stars I'm sorry to have to give it a bad review, but 2 stars could possibly be generous ..., 17 Feb. 2015

I'm afraid I couldn't get past the amateurish writing and stopped reading it after a few chapters. I'm sorry to have to give it a bad review, but 2 stars could possibly be generous - the extra star is for the blurb. It was well written and intriguing, worth one star extra.

Yay! Another cosy crime series with believable characters and good plotting! If others in the series are as enjoyable as "Murder on Thames", you have another convert.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost there..., 15 Jan. 2015

A small book, nicely written, that carried me along throughout. Why 4 stars instead of 5? Because the ending was one step too far. No spoilers here – but, after finishing the book, I wished the author had built up the basic problem in more detail. To be more specific, the lack of information about the underlying psychological processes concerning who-dun-it is a defect. Sad. Because this author can write and the plotting, characterisation and descriptive detail, otherwise, is a delight.

Perhaps I should read another in the series and give the author another chance. Yes. I’ll do that.

Under an English Heaven: An Ellie Kent Mystery
Under an English Heaven: An Ellie Kent Mystery
Price: £2.84

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, good, a new cosy!, 12 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love well written books, and Alice Boatwright has the talent to fit the description. Second, I was brought up on Agatha, Ngaio, Dorothy and other wonderful mystery writers. Under an English Heaven is in the same grand tradition.

Ellie Kent is a recently retired academic who has met and married an English vicar, plunging her into a foreign world. Not only does she have to cope with traditional village life, but she is a ‘new’ wife where the late wife was a paragon. And there’s a stepdaughter who is still grieving. Difficult. We follow Ellie’s reactions and growth throughout the book.

Last but not least is the murder mystery itself, where Ellie, the foreigner, the new wife, is thrown into suspicion herself. It’s a cosy, so don’t expect buckets of blood or high tension chases. Just solid curiosity, the most gentile of nosiness and quick thinking.

Just my type of book.

5.0 out of 5 stars They've done it again!, 15 Nov. 2014

Another excellent and fast moving thriller from the Louise and Mark tag team. Even though I usually stay well clear of books using children as bait (I mean bait for the reader, because losing a child is so horrific), I read this one because of their other books. And it was very good. So, enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Top notch characters and a fast pace, 20 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A well-paced, rip-roaring read! Luke Temple is an interesting character and he's only one of several well-drawn characters in the book. And characters make a book, no matter the genre.

However, if you like to read a thriller in the best tradition of something happening every page, this is it.

That combination - good characterization and a fast pace makes for 5 stars!

4.0 out of 5 stars Oh boy, conspiracy theories!, 5 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I really enjoyed reading The Orphan Conspiracies - I would recommend it as a reference book for all writers of thrillers or mysteries and maybe some other genres. It's a glorious mine of possibilities for underlying sub-plotting. I gave it 4 stars, but would have given it 4.5 if allowed. The half point off 5 is only due to knowing about a couple of the conspiracies through my professional life and knowing some of the basic facts are impossible or plain wrong, and that was just a tad disappointing. But remember that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. If you have any interest in conspiracy theories, you will too!

Blind Overlook (Book 3 of the Jay Leicester Mysteries Series)
Price: £0.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good..., 7 April 2014

The action is about right; the characters are drawn well and the plot is okay. There were a few typos in there...an editor should have found them...but mostly it is fine. Why not a 5? The ending is a little contrived. It is still a good read and many will enjoy the book - as I did.
