5.0 out of 5 stars The Truth at Last, 27 May 2016
This is an excellent read quite apart from being a credible analysis of the events surrounding Hess's decision to come to Britain. New evidence enables the author to dismiss many of the conspiracies surrounding the most bizarre event of the war. He does this very effectively, leaving little left uncertain. An interesting amount of attention is paid to Albrecht Haushofer who was hugely influential in Hess's decision to come to this country and to seek out the Duke of Hamilton whom he had never met. This book is a must for those interested in war history but it is also a rewarding read for those with a more casual interest. It is a very important contribution to war history.

5.0 out of 5 stars using words that could easily have been real, 10 Nov. 2015
This book is superb. I was on a plane and could not stop reading it until it was finished. It offers uncanny insights into Gaddafi's mindset, using words that could easily have been real. The analysis of his personality is compelling. It would make a very good film. I strongly recommend the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit dated, 11 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a compelling story but it was written a long time ago and therefore lacks recent discoveries. The author does not know the difference between Britain and England and constantly refers to the king of England,English government etc. if a historian gets these facts wrong, how reliable is the rest?

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, 11 Jan. 2014

A different slant on an old story with much new information from sources previously unexplored. The author has little time for conspiracy theories. It is also well and sympathetically written.

Poorly written;patronising to Glasgow and Glaswegians;unlikely plot. The story is unlikely. The idea is old hat. Best buried with the bodies.

2.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED, 4 Oct. 2012

As a long time fan of Gavin Esler I was disappointed by this motlet collection of anecdotes. It deserves a much greater analysis than the lessons drawn at the end of each chapter. The book is also very repetitive. Pity.

This review is from: The Great Gatsby (Kindle Edition)
I had heard of this book as most people have but never thought to read it until I saw it was available on Kindle! It was an amusing, disturbing and brilliantly written story. A true reflection of that part of American society at that time.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Top Read, 30 May 2011
This is a superb book and a must read. The author has a light touch in portraying the inferiority complex, and its causes, of the main character. The story moves skillfully between the various parts of Antonio's life in a way that ends up portraying his whole life to date both intimately and sensitively. Interlaced with history from the Spanish Civil War, it is a rich and binding story. It deserves a high place in the fiction charts.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Cutting Edge, 2 Mar. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This seemed like an excellent product, arriving exactly as stated in the advertisement. It wass easy to use, slipped in a pocket and cut or trimmed effectively. I am now, a year later, editing my review. This is the second pair of secateurs I've had from Spear & Jackson because the first had to be returned. This replacement has disintegrated as well. Just fell apart! Ten year guarantee? What's the point in trying again?

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Choice, 3 Feb. 2011
This was one of my worst buys. A long book of unedited detail most of which has little historical importance. A shorter version could have been an illuminating story of interesting characters and their country. As it is, it is a mish-mash of trivia. The author doesn't even seem to know the difference between English & British as she uses them interchangeably; does she know there is no such thing as a King of England or an English government? If she gets that wrong, how accurate are other details? This is researching endless details and pouring them into a book without selectivity.
