2.0 out of 5 stars So the angels don't like fracking?!, 7 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I don't know. Reading Lorna's past books had sort of renewed my faith and helped me through some toughs times, for which I am thankful. Whether she can see angels or not I found her messages comforting and reassuring. Increasingly, however, her books have smacked of a political agenda (I'm no hardline rightwinger btw) and feel there are a lot more pressing matters than what the angels address - the spectacular failure by most of the churches for one. So we don't understand the effect of oil and its purpose underground. We actually have enough science to work that out. I think some guidance on stemcell research would be helpful or a stance on abortion or the effect of family breakdown. These are hardly mentioned. I'm far more sceptical since this book.

How Not to Look Fat
How Not to Look Fat

3.0 out of 5 stars Won't change your life but worth a look, 21 Oct. 2013

I'm sure if you bought this book you would have a fair idea by now what makes you look fat and I don't think it gave any real insider secrets clothing wise ie, wear spanx and heals with trousers. Duh! The section on tips to look slimmer in photos is the best and worth the price. It's written in a fun chatty style and the the illustrations are clear and instructive.

These medals do the trick for a school play but care should be taken to make sure it is securly pinned as the pin is very long and could cause damage. Not for small children.

My 11 year old has gone in and out of piano over the last two years and has recently taken it up again. This book has been a good at revising what he has learnt and has given him confidence. It was recommended by his new teacher and is doing the trick. It's a combination of exercises and tunes. Tunes that are recognisable to him and me which I feel is important. Too many books are filled with made up, old fashioned, nursery rhyme tunes which bore children silly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for over view of Industrial Revolution, 2 Jun. 2013

Covers most things with easy to read and digest pieces of information. Suitable for primary school students. But would give older students a good over view. Good illustrations and setting out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Social History, 2 Jun. 2013

This book is good for exploring the social impact of the Industrial Revolution a little further. Beautifully set out with great pictures. Would suit Senior School students more than primary ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, 2 Jun. 2013

This compilation effectively illustrates how diverse yet how unmistakably true to themselves The Bad Seeds are. Their influences include blues, country, punk, Weill/Brecht, southern gothic, avant-garde, even easy listening. They've created their own niche but they are always evolving. A few solo artists have been able to do this but bands, rarely. Actually, can't think of one.

Listening to this, you can hear how a lot of their music has been very influential (Stranger than Kindness has been widely imitated) but because they are still "alternative" that influence isn't recognised. Tracks like The Carney and Red Right Hand are classics. They are original yet hark back to musical traditions and myths that we recognise even if we don't know where from. This is Cave's genius I think. That he can create these characters who, no matter how sinister or flawed, we recognise them and their impulses if not in ourselves then in others. They are always human for better or for worse and the music always serves the lyrics.

My only criticism is the early recording quality is not as good as it should be and they are certainly due for another compilation as there has been a lot more great music since. But it's a good place to start.
