Firstborn: A Time Odyssey Book Three
Firstborn: A Time Odyssey Book Three
by Arthur C. Clarke
Edition: Hardcover

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed, 1 July 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The third of the trilogy where one might expect action against the 'firstborn', but no it appears 'they' are too formidable and we are doomed. What a disappointment after ploughing through three novels!

Sunstorm - A Time Odyssey: Book Two: Sunstorm Bk. 2

Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars With Arthur C Clarke as a writer the technical content ..., 1 July 2016

With Arthur C Clarke as a writer the technical content although fiction is strongly based on current science. Being part of a trilogy one might accept the 'enemy' would not be defeated in a second novel but 'they' were not even challenged.

3.0 out of 5 stars so the re-reading was a disappointment. The core SF theme was good but more ..., 1 July 2016

Read this 'classic' SF novel 30 or more years ago. It turns out that my memory of it was a somewhat enhanced but distorted version, so the re-reading was a disappointment. The core SF theme was good but more than 50% of the story was about sexual relationships.

Suspect
Suspect
by Robert Crais
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

1.0 out of 5 stars Yuk Yuk, 13 Mar. 2016
This review is from: Suspect (Paperback)
As a fan of the likes of Freddie Forsyth and Lee Child I would like to include Robert Crais although his books are of a different genre. All the Cole Pike novels I have to date found appealing, up until this one. I would normally persevere and read all the way through but not in this case. Treating a dog like a girlfriend gave me the creeps ie "my baby girl" - Yuk

Vengeance: Mystery Writers of America Presents
Vengeance: Mystery Writers of America Presents
by Lee Child
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

1.0 out of 5 stars Miserable Con, 11 Dec. 2015
What a cynical con! This book's cover shows a scene which follows closely the format of the Jack Reacher series. The legend on the spine is Vengeance Lee Child. The profile of readership targeted clearly comprises Jack Reacher fans. This book is a set of 21 short stories abount vengeance only one of which is written by Lee Child. I submit as an avid Jack Reacher fan that this books contents will be of zero interest to the fans. If the publisher/authors wish to promote mediocre writers, they should not be so naive as to underestimate their target audience.

The War Between the Generals
The War Between the Generals
by David Irving
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 7 Dec. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The much maligned David Irving. All his works are the result of detailed research in the field by an accomplished polymath, (himself). Contrast this with the pc ramblings of many armchair historians.

FF is a gifter writer, his prose flows easily and his plots are superb.

Fortress: (Tom Buckingham Thriller 2)
Fortress: (Tom Buckingham Thriller 2)
by Andy McNab
Edition: Paperback
Price: £3.99

1.0 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment, 7 Dec. 2015
What a disappointment. I have read way past the half way mark and still no action to speak of. Tom Buckingham appears to be more of a middle ranking civil servant than an ex SAS soldier. Compare this to the early Nick Stone series, which together with early Lee Child's Jack Reacher are probably the best action adventures ever written.

1.0 out of 5 stars Only for the pretentious, 15 Oct. 2015
This review is from: Our Kind of Traitor (Paperback)
Most of the books I read are loosely of this 'genre' and from the library. Having read Tinker-Taylor.. years ago I bought this copy hoping for a good read. Some authors such as Freddie Forsyth and (even) Andy McNab are easy to read ie without forever going back to reread passages. John LeCarre's prose is convoluted verbidge in my semi-educated opinion. Does it offer an insight into the mind and Inner workings of the secret service, I sincerely hope not!
