Harrowing, shocking, couldn't this down, and to think it actually happened...terrible, but somehow also inspiring. A surprisingly excellent read.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a satisfying read, 30 May 2016

I'm a bit surprised at this as i thought Clive Cussler was / is supposed to be some uber good author, i wanted to try something different so i thought i'd take a punt. The opening chapters were good and i thought this could be a decent read. Unfortunately after the opening sequences the book started to read a bit like a comic strip, all "action" and just no character depth or interesting dialogue and far too unrealistic motivations. The turning point for me came when, after the opening Sydney opera house chapters, this guy- who is supposed to be on some sort of holiday or conference- pretty much on a whim, decides to spend money, call his partner in crime, and then go on this elaborate investigative journey in the outback....really? The motive of the hero to go on this journey were just too unrealistic, it kind of put me off, after that the pages became an increasing struggle and i found myself skim reading and deciding not even half way through enough is enough. I'm surprised how bad it was, really sorry i'm sure it has fans and entertains on some level, it did not do it for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally a decent King read, 8 Mar. 2016

Not bad at all. Much better. A decent read. Was losing faith in King to do the business with so much of his recent stuff boring the living daylights out of me that i was considering calling it a day with King's new books. This hit the spot nicely though.

1.0 out of 5 stars This would have been better off a short story that cost 15p, 8 Mar. 2016

This would have been better off a short story that cost 15p. A "novel" needs to have some element of entertainment and engagement and something vaguely true to its genre. Very sorry, but pages and pages and pages and pages of mental rambling / memories / delusional thoughts with nothing actually happening just doesn't cut it: it makes for a painful and irritatingly boring read. Yes, some parts are well written, a Stephen King signature. But does having to sit through pages of tedium count for a good read /book? I don't think so. Sorry, used to be massive King fan, the biggest there was, i really don't remember his stuff being this boring. Nothing happens, she gets lost...all these comments about how it's a testament to human spirit, uplifting, survivor story....bla bla...I say this: What a Load of Rubbish. Where is the horror and suspense? Even at the end - no spoilers- please read the end when she's on the road...I mean REALLY? Are you J.O.K.I.N.G? What kind of an ending is that? Zero horror, zero suspense, zero plot, zero satisfaction, left with an irritation that i actually spent money on this and invested time to read it and in the end felt sorely ripped off. If you don't want to be bored out of your mind and left feeling cheated do yourself a favour and read something else.
