I have been following The Kooks since they first started. I was struck by the awesome haunting quality in Luke's voice coupled with the fact that they cited The Police as one of their influences and I think this comes through in the punk/ska/instrumental sound of some of their tracks. However in the interests of preserving the pleasure/pain principle I will say I was hugely dissapointed to find out that they had re-arranged Eddies Gun which now sounds over cooked, messed up and awkward - the original is as always the best, short sharp and bittersweet - I suppose this illustrates the fact that there is no need to mess with perfection. So my advice boils down to two things - make sure you get hold of the original single of Eddies Gun before they delete it and go see them live in a small venue before they become huge. The album is however a great debut and they are all so young which hopefully means even greater things to come - so long live The Kooks!
