A Life Discarded
A Life Discarded
by Alexander Masters
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £9.09

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling reading, 31 May 2016
This review is from: A Life Discarded (Hardcover)
It's been a long time since I read a book in a single sitting. The author takes you with him on his journey of discovery from the start all the way to the finish line - and then with some more twists and turns thrown in for good measure too!
If ever you've been just a little intrigued by journals and who would keep writing them over decades, look no further. This is an easy and enjoyable read from the beginning and by the time you reach the final page, you feel that you have known the cast of characters for years.
Buy it today, read it and pass it on!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great value. Prompt delivery, 31 May 2016

Great value. Prompt delivery. However, because the mealworms are packed in a single polywoven sack, they have broken up excessively and created lots of dust and waste. I will be buying in bulk again but will only buy from a supplier in 5 x 1kg sealed bags. The really good news is that the birds and our three resident hedgehogs go mad for them!

4.0 out of 5 stars Filling in the gaps...., 14 Dec. 2013
This review is from: The Untold Story (Kindle Edition)
I bought this book because my late father was also involved with the BEF through Cherbourg in 1940 and like many others, never mentioned the war very much and I'm trying to fill in some of the gaps. It seems unbelievable today that Britain was still sending men to fight further along the French coast whilst dealing with the near total disaster of evacuating Dunkirk a week earlier. The sole purpose of this campaign seems to have been to delay the German advance and coming invasion of Britain at any cost to gain a little more time to prepare the home front.
This short account is written as a personal diary and appears to be in unedited form. It's also very specific to the writer's own and immediate experiences and the difficulties encountered both advancing and more importantly, retreating safely amid the ensuing confusion. It plays another important but small part in building the picture of Britain's desperate days to defend herself against Nazi Germany.
The only real downside, is the last quarter of the book where the author's correspondence to various military departments are reproduced showing how sorely aggrieved he is at a sergeant's military award believing, incorrectly, that that this man had nominated himself.

This review is from: The Zurich Axioms (Paperback)
This book is such an easy read it should be made compulsory reading. It gives many comparisons between various means of saving including property, bonds and shares and highlights their respective outcomes over the years. It's especially useful now that Britain has started to realise that the state won't fully support people in their times of need and that we all need to build our own nest eggs as soon as we start earning.
I've read this book three times now and after each read have become more convinced that you only need a couple of simple finance books in your library and this should be your first one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great little history lesson!, 10 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book nostalgic easy read on the history of the Reliant three-wheelers, especially so if you owned one of the cars. Lots of interesting facts, background information and development and the sequence of model development. Only let down by poor, older B&W photo quality and missing production numbers and no inkling how many are left. You will need to buy Volume 2 though to get the whole story! Even allowing for these detractions, it's very much still worth a read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good product shame about it crashing, 3 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: WebPlus X6 (PC) (DVD-ROM)
I've been using WebPlus X6 for a couple of months on Windows 7 and it's a simple to use, wysiwyg format that makes for quick website building, especially using the templates provided. It's mainly drag and drop boxes and then pull the handles into the text or photo shape you want, togesther with cut and paste it's all good easy stuff. There's a great online forum and loads of training videos to help you build your site.
The really bad news is the software continually crashes and unless you constantly 'save' after every single action you make, you are very likely to lose all your recent work. This gets very tiring and distracting and makes it impossible to progress with any confidence. There seems to be no sign of Serif fixing this bug and until they do, I would suggest you look elsewhere.

2.0 out of 5 stars A great kettle but........, 21 July 2012
We bought the Wahl 'James Martin' version of this kettle just over 2 years ago which is exactly the same item but with his 'signature' on it. It's a good kettle - very stable, quiet, not heavy to lift and a great pourer once you get used to the angle that water pours from the spout. It doesn't splutter or dribble either. Our only (minor) gripe is that you can't fill the kettle through the spout and have to raise the lid each time - why do they only seem to make them all like this? The 'keep warm' switch is a bit of a gimmick but you choose whether to use it or not. A 2 year warranty clinched the deal. Altogether a great kettle then?
Not quite.

The complicated and over-fussy lid mechanism has broken 3 times in the past 2 years. The kettle has been replaced twice free of charge under warranty but has now broken again but this time is just out of warranty. Each time you return the kettle it costs £7 or so in postal charges (likely to be more now with the recent increases) as well as the inconvenience - none of which are refundable, of course. Whilst the kettle itself still works perfectly, the broken lid locking mechanism means that as the kettle boils, it raises the lid and emits large volumes of steam and this in turn prevents the kettle from switching off when it's boiling.

Another great product spoilt by a 2 penny cheap part. Sensibly, Mr Martin seems to have now removed himself from marketing this product. Our advice is to keep the original box, packaging and receipt for when you return the kettle and if you still decide to buy, make full use of the warranty.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great starter to Wordpress but........, 21 July 2012

First of all let me agree with most other reviewers and compliment Sarah on producing this well-written and easy to follow short book on WordPress. Like most novices, I'd read that WP is the flexible future if I wanted to produce my own website without going to Geekdom and back and needing to learn and write in code. Before buying her download, I'd spent fuddled days reading WP Forums, watching videos and getting nowhere fast and thinking "Here we go again". Simple stuff needs to win in 2012.

I read a few reviews on here and Amazon.com and thought there's nothing to lose by buying this download. By following her book page by page, you very quickly get a basic website structure in place and up and running. Her common theme is "Don't ask - just do it!" and that's fine by me because it works and works well. The problem is that you will come away with a basic website/blog listing a couple of pages very quickly but you will have completely outgrown the book and are left wanting. For instance, it doesn't cover some very basic functions such as page sorting and this leaves your website page structure in an illogical order (eg a Contact page at the beginning rather than as the last page) and you're back to WP Forums and videos to fix it.

Her style of writing and teaching process are great but Sarah really does need to produce another 3 more advanced books quickly to take the student step-by-step on to better things. As it is today, I've nowhere to go except buy again from another author, start again and try and move upwards. And that's not what I need.

This is another great little Ixus. I've had three now over the years and have not been disappointed with any of them. This one now has face recognition as well as a host of other things that were undreamed of only a couple of years ago. Dead easy to download and has a great battery life too.
Oh, and the best bit is that is that it has a viewfinder as well as an lcd screen. Just remember that when you're trying to take pictures on holiday in bright sunshine and can't see antything on your camera lcd screen, you just use the viewfinder instead with the Ixus. Simple.
