5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the recent re-issues, 20 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have bought 3 of these reissues to date ( Hangman's, Wee Tam + The Big Huge + this one ) and to my ears this has the best re-mastering, perhaps because the original Vinyl was always a bit of a challenge (mainly because of the relatively simple recording equipment and some fairly ''exotic'' sounds I should guess) this one seems to have produced the most obvious improvement in sound quality over previous CD issues - some distortion inevitably remains but overall the sound has been cleaned and sharpened very well. As with all the others, the packaging is very good with some lovely photographs and all the lyrics. If you need a copy of this, this is the one to go for - and unlike the others I have bought, I would say this is a definate improvement in sound quality from previous CD versions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Remastering OK but ....., 20 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wee Tam & the Big Huge (Audio CD)
As with all these ISB reissues to date, there are no extra/alternate tracks on this version - which is fine as the original Album was brilliant as it was. The music itself is as it always was - and you like it or you don't, for me it is 5*. The dropped star for this reissue is because I found the re-mastering a little disappointing, better than on Hangman's, but still not the jump in clarity and detail which now seems to be the norm with re-mastered stuff from this era - I guess they were constrained by the original source material. The packaging is great with all the lyrics printed in the booklet ( nearly ) as the original cover - the participants/instruments on each track are omitted for some reason. If you don't have a copy or are looking to replace vinyl/cassette, then this is the version to go for, but if you have one of the previous CD issues, perhaps listen first to see if you think the enhances sound is worth it.

3.0 out of 5 stars great music but ....., 20 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A bit of a shame there are no extra or alternate tracks etc, but some would say that such things tend to dilute the impact and shape of the original Album. The repackaging is very good with photos, lyrics etc but the ''re-mastering'' is a bit of a disappointment - yes the sound is a bit sharper and some instruments are clearer, but there is still much of the distortion of the original. The music remains brilliant of course and if you don't have a copy this is the one to go for - but don't expect a revelationary new sound quality.

I wasn't quite sure what ''Legacy Edition'' would mean - basically it means you get over 2.5 hours of music on 2 full CDs - all of ''Ah Hum'', all of ''Dynasty'' plus alternative and additional tracks all remastered to a remarkable sound. Fantastic - this is what reissues should all be like.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHY CAN'T ALL CDs BE PACKAGED LIKE THIS, 19 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Eps (Audio CD)
You either love this music or you hate it, there probably isn't much in between. The earlier reviews cover the music, but the presentation of this set is just fantastic - not a bit of plastic in sight for a start. The music would very nearly fit onto 1 CD ( less than 100 minutes or so ) but has been presented on 5 broadly themed CDs in 5 individual card sleeves with lovely art work and a booklet all within a quality hinged thick card box. It's just a pleasure to own. In the same post I received a double CD in one of those huge plastic double CD boxes, which seems big enough to hold about 6 discs and almost immediately cracks, falls to bits or spills one of the discs out onto the floor - come on chaps, do it like this !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars STUNNING PACKAGE, 12 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Music speaks for itself and the whole Package is just great - CDs presented in a beautiful, Linen bound ''book''in paper sleeves accompianied by a hardback book with some informative essays, track and recording details and photographs of the original Album covers - both enclosed in a substantial cardboard sleeve - all of the highest quality. One small thing to take into account is that although the package covers, effectively, 6 albums the tracks are presented here in chronological recording order and it takes a bit of detective work to ''recreate'' the original Albums and the notes/information etc are not helpful on this either - in fact I couldn't find any mention at all, not a great issue for me, but purists take note !

4.0 out of 5 stars IF THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT.........., 20 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wristwatch Annual 2010 (Paperback)
I have a considerable number of these now, bought each year as they come out - and I love them, particularly as a comparative set. BUT, they are what they are - or rather, if you are contemplating buying any of them it is important to know what they are not !!! They are NOT books about the history or development of wristwatches, or a comprehensive ''brochure'' for all, or any, of the Brands featured, or a comprehensive survey of available Brands, or even a reliable price guide for the UK ( USA list prices given in US$ ) - so if that's what you want look elsewhere, there's lot's of great stuff available. Also it's very USA-Centric and there are rather a lot of ''Advertorials''paid for by the manufacturers but masquerading as editorial.

However, what they do very well indeed is provide an excellent overview of the way the wristwatch industry is developing, trends, new technologies and materials, new Brands etc, and for the price each volume is pretty good value - especially at the discounted price. Because they are published every year, they are also more up to date than most ''coffee table'' type books - the 2010 version for example has an overview of the effects of the recession on the ''big hitters'' in the industry and the consequent flowering of ''independent'' Brands. Finally, each Brand is given a short history/overview, brief technical details are given for each watch featured and the photographs are pretty good too.

So, if that is what you want, in my opinion this is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars CD PLAYER FANTASTIC/SOFTWARE RUBBISH, 8 Jan. 2010
The CD player itself is fantastic and is everything I expected and wanted- I don't need to repeat everything others have written, it's all good. I have Sure headphones anyway and haven't used the phones supplied so can't comment - but they simply unplug from the remote control and you plug in whatever you want to use.

However, the ATRAC system, as supplied to me anyway, is a disgrace !!!

I purchased this in December 2009 and it arrived with software version 2.0 dated 2003 ( the disc is long consigned to the bin !! ) which just didn't work at all. I dug around on the Internet and found version 4.3 - whether this is the latest version I don't know, but at least it worked, after a fashion. If manufacturers are going to sell a product with specific features they should at least have a duty of care to provide reasonably up to date, functioning software - of course such things develope and have a built in obsolesence but 6 - 7 years old ?!?

I would recommend this product, but beware of the ATRAC software !!!

1.0 out of 5 stars TRULY AWFUL, 8 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The combination of dreadful spelling, grammar, editing and punctuation together with a plethora of obvious factual and caption errors means that it is impossible to trust anything at all in this book - or even understand much of it. The only reason it gets one star is that I can't give it a deserved zero.

It may be pedantic, but there is an accepted difference between fakes, forgeries and replicas - with the assembly of genuine Rolex parts, for example, to ''create'' an apparently valuable watch being extremely prevelent, with the Prince probably being the most faked model. Non of this is covered, and is by far the most difficult to detect - most ''replicas'' are pretty poor and generally easy to spot anyway if you have studied the real thing.

As noted elsewhere, the production values are way off the bottom of any reasonable scale. Another reviewer notes the fact that Prince William is clearly not wearing a Rolex, but how he identified it as an Omega is beyond me as the photographs are just unbelievably poor. Yes, we would all prefer colour but there is nothing intrinsically wrong with B+W, however there is simply no excuse for the stunningly bad quality here. There is one, again very poor, colour photograph on the cover - and that is of a replica Breitling, says it all really !!!

There are dozens of good books on Watches out there, including sevaral specialist volumes on Rolex and Breitling with brilliant sections on history and fakes/replicas, but this one is so bad on every level, it is worrying that so many people will use this book and believe what they read - please don't waste your money.
