Briilantly crafted plot and character development. Just two quibbles, the motivation for Jessica, Forbes and Alice is not convincing nor is the downgrading of Rebus to a Detective Sergeant. However, the developing relationship with Fox worked well and made the book distinctive within the series. These are two very strong characters with complimenting strengths and weaknesses, which they each increasingly recognise.

Hopefuly, in the next instalment, Rebus will be bumped back up following his successful "probation" and will be working with Fox again. Perhaps, working for a devious and politically motivated Superintendent!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good But Disappointing, 29 Dec. 2013
A fast moving and exciting story, but shows signs of deadline compliance and complacent editing. Questions have to be asked regarding what is the point of Decimus? - he seems to be designed for two plot sub-texts which are not actually developed ("betrayal" & "illicit silver"). The impression is given of the story being published before it has been properly finished.
