An important book for anyone thinking of visiting malarial areas or taking anti-malarial medication, especially Larium. The story is well-written and terrifying - thank you, David.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost Life-Changing, 4 May 2012

This review is from: Samarkand (Paperback)
I have (had?) no interest in the history of Persia or Turkey, but was advised by a friend that this was a good book. This book is so good. I read the first three-quarters in two days, then delayed getting to the end for a month. Beautifully written, incisive, thought-provoking, I have resolved to read it again - an honour I give few books. Brilliant, a must-read if you're interested in people, places, lifestyles or love. And if you're not interested in any of those...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Book, 26 Nov. 2011
This book is excellent - the best book I've read for a long time. Japanese business culture, entrepreneurial challenges, a Japanese perspective on World War 2, insights into the lives of the rich and famous - what is there not to like?

5.0 out of 5 stars Challenge Yourself: read this book., 21 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a thought-provoking study of ourselves. What is the developed world's relationship with Africa? Do we dare to leave our comfort zones and challenge ourselves, even from the armchair? This guy has researched extensively; then got off his butt and challenged himself almost beyond his limits. This is a well-written educated look at a fascinating part of the world, which most of us prefer to ignore. It is full of literary, historical, economic, human, moral and personal references which moved me. If you want a serious, thought-provoking read, which will stay with you for at least weeks, possibly months, read this book. If you think life is about sitting on the sofa waiting for the next episode of 'EastEnders', do that, and let life pass you by. I bought three copies of this book, and shipped them to friends. And I don't do that more than once a decade. Well done, Tim, and thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated but Good, 20 Jan. 2011
A good book - deals well with the fundamentals. Of particular note is the throwaway remark that some firms may keep two sets of books. A book which combines the author's experience with academic accuracy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ideal Business Gift, 6 May 2009
Short, pithy, thought-provoking. Plenty of nuggets. An ideal small business gift for any executive or colleague. I've carried my copy with me since I took delivery of it.
