5.0 out of 5 stars Yearning on the moors...with corsets, 18 May 2010
This film dramatises a little piece of lesbian history - the extraordinarily explicit diaries of Halifax lesbian Anne Lister, which she wrote in a complicated code. If you are a lesbian and you don't know about Anne, you're in for a real treat, and if you do know about her, this is a great realisation of her story on screen. Anne is fairly wealthy, totally unabashed in pursuing her alliances and yet also has a yearning restlessness about her which is perfectly brought out in the film. The objects of her affections are often more susceptible to societal pressure and the film turns on her search for a woman who will be her 'one true companion'a quest with several false leads, including her best friend who loves her but who isn't loved in return.

It's heartwarming rather than sexy (although there are some charged love scenes) but this film shouldn't be dismissed as a worthy curiosity. There's some great performances, a real sense of connection between the actresses and a great story, which just happens to be true. Who knew Halifax was so exciting?

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesomely beautiful film, 12 April 2010
This review is from: Spider Lilies [2006] [DVD] (DVD)
We went to see this film at a LGBT film festival as it was the only thing we could get tickets for and were absolutely blown away. It's smart, beautifully acted and filmed and a real breath of fresh air in lesbian cinema. The leads are beautiful and the bond between them sparkles but the film also touches on serious themes of loss, family responsibilities and redemption. It's ultimately uplifting and surprisingly easy viewing (easier, for example, than 'Drifting Flowers' - also, I think, by this director) but makes you think along the way. While some arthouse cinema can be turgid, obscure and alienating, this film is beautiful, stylish and moving. I really loved it and can't recommend it enough.

This is a really sharply observed, very funny film. I bought it as a bit of a random punt and seriously loved it. Great scenes, uplifting ending and some fantastic performances from the leads.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, 29 Mar. 2010

This film was a bit of a random buy - and I was blown away! It's quite possibly the most funny and energetic lesbian/gay films I've seen. In some ways it feels like a really good farce - think 'Puccini for beginners' but Spanish, with stunning musical numbers that comment on (and drive forward) the action. The characters feel true to themselves, the performances sparkles - all in all, a really, really great night in. Me and my girlf loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lola love!, 29 Mar. 2010
This is a really great lesbian film which is refreshingly positive. No-one dies or goes straight, there are great sex scenes, a witty script and an exuberant joie de vivre and energy about the whole thing which sets it apart. The whole of San Francisco in the background to the shots is wonderfully, carelessly gay, the chemistry between the leading roles sparkles and Lola's breathless chase takes her in some surprising - and hilarious - directions.

The basic plot is that Lola tends to screw up her relationships. She gets a phonecall from her current girlfriend to ask her to pick up some prints and make it across San Francisco in time for an important business meeting but will she make it, and will her girlfriend have been still be her girlfriend by the time she gets there? Fortunately she gets more than one shot...
