5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM FROM SB, 16 July 2012
This review is from: The Secret Life Of Us (Audio CD)
Its been 4 years since the last Sunburst CD and the bar has been set pretty high by their previous albums, especially "Until the End of time". I'm very pleased to say this new set doesn't disappoint at all. As always the musicianship, vocalists and production are spot on with Julian Crampton's funky bass playing in particular being as good as I've heard on a recording. Some truly memorable songs, obviously the Brenda Russell cover "In The Thick of It" which takes her beautiful semi ballad and turns it into into a MAW style soulful house cut with gorgeous live strings is an initial stand out. However, after a couple of listens I've also grown to love the Chic-ish title track, cheeky "Heartbeat" style "My Way", 80s boogie "Definition of Love" and moody philly style instrumental "Opus de Soul". while maybe a slightly out of character the guilty pleasures type pop soul of "Caught in the Moment" is a real sing along moment. slightly more 80s and boogiefied than previous work but none the less a great album that brightened up my day and I venture many more days to come.

if you liked blaze and acts like ten city and adeva back in the 90s then this album is for you. somewhere between house and soul, lots of great uptempo vocal tracks with real feeling. recommended!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars don't believe the hype, 29 Aug. 2011
This review is from: Space Is Only Noise (Audio CD)
my jaar has made some interesting music in the past but this cd is not great. he is a good looking young guy and seems to have the press on his side, so has become a trendy name to drop, good for him. i bought the cd but its like a poor bookshade, nothing particularly inventive about it

1.0 out of 5 stars Should be re titiled - The Stupid American Male, 29 Aug. 2011
I can't believe the ratings are so high on this terrible book, it's like the literary equivalent of one of those moronic American college movies where a group of annoying guys go round trying to score with equally annoying girls. Surprised another review compares it to the excellent Californication TV series - erm....i don't think so, that's much more intelligent and better written than this.

I've read quite a few rock autobiographies, so i wasn't expecting amazing writing but this is very poor on every level - the story, the ending, the characterisation, the repetitive way the story is told.

Do yourself a favour and buy another book

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST ALBUM OF 2010, 16 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Back for More (Audio CD)
it's all been said already but if you're sitting on the fence and not sure whether to buy this cd please take the plunge. its a great modern soul/boogie set with lots of guest vocalists which has obviously taken the producers frank ryle and rod hardt a lot of time and love. despite the production duo being from europe many of the vocalists are american and will be familiar names to anyone buying soul lps in the 80s.....eugene wilde, leroy burgess and melissa morgan all feature across the album. if you liked early/mid 80s soul then this is for you. more please

4.0 out of 5 stars In The Groove, 15 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Raydio + Rock On (Audio CD)
I'm glad to report that ray parker's first and second lps have stood the test of time. I love "jack and jill", sure its very poppy but it's a really cute song the like of which we don't hear too often nowadays. Staying with the first album "get down" is a groovy vocodered cut while "its a love thing" (nothing to do with the whispers) still jumps out the speakers. the second lp wasn't quite as successful and maybe the better tracks are the more mid tempo cuts like the lovely "you can't change that", which was a hit stateside and still hits the spot. "hot stuff" has a very funky bassline and reminds me of the brothers johnson. while "more than one way to love a woman" has a bee gees feel to it...not in a bad way. Getting two albums for this price, you really can't go far wrong

3.0 out of 5 stars slightly strange selection, 15 Mar. 2011
there are certainly some good tracks here but also quite a few (like cheryl lynn "got to be real") that have been on loads of compilations already, while almost all of the lesser known cuts (companion, double discovery etc) are just plain average and i'm not sure why they've been included on a cd entitled classic disco

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT ELECTRONIC ALBUM WITH SOUL, 3 Dec. 2010
i felt i had to write a review of this album after some heavy rotation on my car stereo over the last month. Though i've bought all the Sunburst Band CDs i wasn't sure how into this more electronic offering from producer Dave Lee. However, I'm pleased to report this album does not disappoint at all. Lots of great deep musical house tracks with enough soul and vocals to keep the old heads pleased but with a futuristic approach to the instrumentation and arrangements. I can hear influences of Mr Fingers, Kerri Chandler and other old school house producers across the album. We kick off with the 80s synth funk title track, which kind of comes across as Raydio meets Daft Punk. One of my favorites is the next song "Crystalized", which has an acid house bass line under classic chords and quirky Plantlife type vocals. I also love the Murk style electro funk of "Behind the Mask" with Tanya Michelle's soulful vocals. However, most of my favorites are in the second half of the cd, the majestic John Barry ish "Another World" (with Berliner Andre Lodeman). The moody deep "Heatwave on Mars", Tony Momrelle's beautiful Blaze like "Life is so strange" and pure old school Detroit tech house "Another Generation"......echoes of Underground Resistance on that one i think? So all in all much more depth and re listen value than many more DJ driven "dance" albums. Thoroughly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars great selection and the best of the series, 4 Jun. 2010
This review is from: Soul Togetherness 2009 (Audio CD)
for me this is the best of the soul togetherness cds. chaka khan, root soul, omar, tavares.....sooooo many killer tracks old and new.

couldn't believe one of the other reviews gave this album 1 star, sounds like he was either in a bad mood that day or doesn't like this style of music. please don't let this put you off, i'm pretty fussy but this is one of my favourite cds of the last year and i've enjoyed listening to it immensely

great stuff expansion!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars great selection of lesser known british jazz funk, 4 Jun. 2010
i was very pleased to read about this cd. many songs on here i'd not heard since 1980/81, even though i bought a few of them at the time ;-) i
think brit funk has its place in the history of uk dance and tracks like mirage and freeez still sound surprisingly good to my ears. with 20+ tracks on 2 cds it would feel mean to mention the 2 or 3 songs i wasn't crazy about, in general is a strong selection of the more underground tunes that haven't been on compilations before.
