2.0 out of 5 stars Uncle Sam, Uncle Sam, Uncle Sam..... No Thanks, 23 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Swing Vote [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Ok it is fair to say that when viewing a film about the American vote, you would be right in expecting it to be slightly Americanised, buut thius went further than my expectations and is fully Americanised, making viewing quite difficult at times, but if you give it a chance it can be rewarding.

Firstly there is an alstar cast including Kevin Costner (Robin Hood), Kelsy Grammer (Fraiser/The Simpsons), Nathan Lane (Mouse Hunt) and Stanley Tucci, and if you're a fan of any of theirs you might enjoy the film. Furthermore fortunately the film isn't just a drama, it's a comedy/ drama, making the film light hearted and add a feel good factor on it.

The film is watchable, but the 'over americaniss' of it spoils it. But what should I expect? It is about the vote!

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping thriller!, 23 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Angels & Demons [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
For someone who has never read angels and demons or even read the da vinci code, I was pleasently suprised upon watching the film version of the Da Vinci Code, and so it was only natural that I watched this.

And what can I say, this film was just as good as the Da Vinci Code, grabbing my attention from beginning til end, with action packed moments, tense scene and brilliantly placed plot twists that make this film one of the best to be released in 2009.

Tom Hanks is as great as always as is the supporting cast making this a must see film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Nuttiest Sound Around!, 17 Sept. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It has been a great year for Madness, sell out gigs, numerous festival appearances, the release of the top 5 album The Liberty of Norton Folgate and also the release of another hit album Total Madness. It has probably been one of the finest years of their career to be honest and the re-release of One Step Beyond is the icing on the cake.

One Step Beyond is Madness's first every album, and if you're expecting anything like the sound of the Liberty of Norton Folgate, you'l be in for a suprise, a nice suprise that is.

The songs contained within One Step Beyond are more 'raw' and 'nutty', there is a certain cheeky element to them. In this delux edition you will find the first four Madness singles, The Prince, One Step Beyond, My Girl, and Night Boat to Cairo taken from the Work, Rest and Play EP. These songs are still as popular today at gigs as they were then, and they are supported by the fabulous Bed and Breakfast Man and Madness, plus a whole host of other wonderful songs featured in the album included a couple that are sung by the sax player, Lee Thompson.

It's hard to think that this album is 30 years old now, and for this reason there is a second disc included which features the amazing b-sides to the singles, The Work, Rest and Play EP, alternative versions, The Peel sessions and the famous videos to the singles.

The booklet is also a good read too, with linear notes by Irvine Welsh.

It is a fantastic package and does the album great justice. If you own a Madness Greatest Hits albyum I'd reccomend that you buy this, this is superb!

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice suprise, 17 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Big Nothing [DVD] (DVD)
I've been a fan of Schwimmer and Pegg for a while now and had always wanted to watch this film, but didn't really know what to expect.

Firsty the film is like nothing I've ever seen before and that's not a bad thing. The film revolves around Schwimmer and Peggs characters attempting to blackmail a vicar, before acidentily killing him, well that was they initially think. and from there everything that can go wrong does go wrong.

It is hilarious and full of a lot of plot twists and turns, but it also has a rather unusual ending which is actually quite somber.

Worth a watch, very different, but good all the same!

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost as fun as a real funeral, 17 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Death At A Funeral [DVD] (DVD)
I had high expectations of this film when a friend lent me this DVD but I'm afraid the film wasn't as good as I could have hoped for.

The film is based a around a funeral which is attended by all of the characters, an as you would expect from the title there happens to be a death at the funeral when a 'scandal is discovered by the two sons.

It's a clever concept but unfortunately the script isn't all that funny and the film doesn't really get going til half way through. The second part of the film is actually rather decent, but the slow unfuny first half just ruins it.

I also don't understand why there are so many main characters that don't really have anything to do with the main plot. They tend to get in the way.

So all in all it is watchable, but could have been something better!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best comedy around!, 15 Sept. 2009
I never watched this during it's first run and didn't think that it would be the type of show for me as I usually prefer the more traditional british comedy, but what can I say, this is the best thing on TV at the moment.

It is laugh out loud hilarious and many of the stories that the characters find themselves in can easliy be relate to anybody who has been a student at sixth form. It's a shame the episodes only last 22mins each as it is very addictive and you can easily watch them all in one session! But don't worry there are plenty of extras.

The show is so funny and is a real gem! I'll certainly be watching series 3!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Madness, 15 Sept. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's been along time since Madness have had a proper 'new' compliation out, and this album won't disapoint the general music loving public!

The album conists of 23 Madness songs (21 singles/ 2 album tracks) that take you from 1979 right up to the beginning of 2008. All of the big hits are here including House of Fun, Our House, Baggy Trousers, My Girl and it Must be Love. Plus there are plenty of their forgotten hits such as Michael Caine, Cardiac Arrest and One Better Day. And then you've got the 1999 hit Lovestruck and the brilliant NW5 from their latest album. You even get videos for all of the tracks to watch too (apart from the track Madness which didn't have one).

All of the tracks (apart from NW5) have been remastered and sound better and clearer than ever, and it is nice that the running order has been completley refreshed after the chronalogical order seen on Divine Madness. The listing on this CD almost matches the live gigs starting off with the classic One Step Beyond and ending with the wonderful Night Boat to Cairo.

My only complaint is that this album only represents part of the Madness story with the singles from the Mad Not Mad album, such as Uncle Sam and Yesterdays Men, missing. Madness's only live single 'The Harder They Come' is also missing along with Johnny the Horse and Drip Fed Fred (although these two do feature in the digital download). There is also no mention of anything from the Dangermen Session and no 'Sorry' or the latest singles 'Dust Devil' and 'Sugar and Spice' which were released this year. Maybe I'm asking to much, but hopefully we'll have a fuller singles collection at a later date once licencing issues are resolved.

The only other disapointment is the booklet which is actually more like a leaflet that lists the credits for the songs and advertises the other fuuture Madness releases. But it is the music that counts and it certainly makes up for the lack of a booklet.

But for now this album will certainly do and it is certainly good value for money with 23 top Madness tunes and 22 videos, what more can youu want. This is a must have collection!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Erasure Release!, 18 Aug. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Erasure.Club (Audio CD)
I think it is great that Erasure are pleasing their fans by releasing best of cds, album reissues, and various EPs, but this I'm afraid to say is perhaps one of the poorest Erasure release.
The tracks included in this release were originally remixed in the early 1990's for a limited promo release, and too be honest the remixes aren't anything extra special.
Compared to the modern remixes featured on the Pop remix EP released earlier this year, Erasure Club doesn't match Erasure recent high standard. It is is surprising that Mute decided to give this a physical release and not the Abba remix EP which is a download only and features 4 briliant remixes from the early 90's.
Erasure club sounds very dated and very uninspirational, with mostly unknown Erasure tracks. This is only for proper Erasure fans and collecters! Lets hope the Phantom Bride EP released later this year s back to their usual standard!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Insight!, 11 Aug. 2009
I've been a fan of One Foot for years and I didn't think twice about buying this fantastic book.
The book is, written by Richard Webber is 100% official and includes inputs from the whole cast and the team behind the programme.
It is an ultimate guide to the show giving a detailed account of how the show began and how it progressed from series to series, charting the suucess of the show and giving a great insight into how the show was made.
In addition to the general story of the show from beginning to end there is also a nice episode guide in the back and also loads of photographs that have never before being seen.
This has to be the best TV show related book there has been, and easily meets the high standards set by the show. A must have for any fan!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Top Madness Tune!, 28 July 2009
This is the latest single to be taken from Madness's new Album the Liberty of Norton Folgate, and has 'Madness' written all over it.

Sugar and Spice tells the tale of the joy of love and how the happiness of a relationship can turn into sadness. The track was written by Mike Barson and can be compared to the style of another Mike Barson classic My Girl.

The radio edit of this track differs slightly from the album version with slightly different lyrics in the opening verse. Shame it is download only, but it is well worth a listen. Also keep your eyes open for the b-side demo version which features Mike Barson on lead vocals! Must have!
