1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special, 25 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Dead Silence [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Perhaps I missed something that the previous reviewers didn't, but I did not find this film all that special. Yes, the dolls were slightly freaky and there were some quite gruesome episodes but I watched the film not feeling any empathy with the characters and not feeling particularly scared by the goings-on, or even 'horrified' which is, I guess is what a horror film is supposed to make you feel. There was no psychological depth to the film either - not that a horror film should necessarily have any psychological depth to it, but seeing as it wasn't massively gruesome or scary in any other way, then it should have some redeeming quality to it for it to qualify into this category and as far as I can fathom, dolls with rolling eyeballs does not a scary horror film make.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unpretentious and very enjoyable, 20 Mar. 2008
I really enjoyed this film. It is a story set in the eighties about a boy realising and then coming to terms with his sexuality. The soundtrack is fantastic, the acting is skilled and the costume is reminder of just how great/terrible eighties fashion was. The film deals with the emotive issues in a sensitive way and the overall feeling of the film is warm and unpatronising.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 12 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Atonement [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
Impressive cinematography, but otherwise I was let down and was expecting more from this, given the hype the film has had.

2.0 out of 5 stars fairly average, 10 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Straightheads [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
A film about the darker side of human nature which asks questions about revenge - how far someone will go for it and how the pursuit of it can be detrimental to the character of a person. The film on the whole was fairly average.

2.0 out of 5 stars repeats on you, 7 Mar. 2008
This review is from: Hidden (cache) [DVD] (DVD)
I would agree with some of the previous reviewers that the film does end abruptly leaving you feeling that you've missed something somewhere. However, the film does seem to repeat on you afterwards and it does keep you thinking. It is definitely an interesting film and very 'french'.

2.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining for the wrong reasons!, 7 Feb. 2008
This review is from: I Know Who Killed Me [DVD] (DVD)
I had heard that this film was going to be terrible and so I watched it with the same expectation. Admittedly, it wasn't a great film; but I have seen far worse films which purport to be better. The film was very, very predictable and it is very easy to tear the storyline and acting etc. to shreds whilst you're watching it (which was actually half the fun of the film!). At the same time, the story had a relatively interesting concept behind it and it kept my interest throughout it's duration. Ultimately, the film did keep me entertained (albeit probably due to how laughably bad it was in parts) which, at the end of the day, is what a film is supposed to do.

2.0 out of 5 stars It is refreshing to watch a British film set in London that isn't all about East End gangsters., 7 Feb. 2008
This review is from: Breaking And Entering [DVD] (DVD)
It is refreshing to watch a British film set in London that isn't all about East End gangsters. In a film with predominantly female characters, Jude Law's character needed to have a bit more commanding masculinity about him for balance, however, Jude played the character of Will in his typical manner of playing the sensitive male in touch with his feminine side. Not a bad film though.

1.0 out of 5 stars Forgettable, 29 Jan. 2008
I felt no empathy towards any of the characters and found myself not caring what happened to them. If the telephone had rung whilst I was watching this - I would have got up and answered it, without pressing pause.

1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of an evening, 21 Jan. 2008
This film caused me to waste a valuable Sunday evening. Eighties background music, rubbish special effects (again, very eighties-esque), no atmosphere, awful acting and unconvincing characters. The only way this ghost story was scary was in how terrible it was.
