4.0 out of 5 stars Scandanavian Americana at its very best, 8 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Elin Ruth (Audio CD)
First album by another very talented Scandanavian singer songwriter that's perfect for anyone who likes catchy melodies, sharp lyrics and quality vocals with a slight - although distinctive - 'country' flavour. My personal preference leans nore towards jazz, blues and folk but this is a very accomlished albums and Elin Ruth Sigvardsson delivers her own distinct interpretation of Americana much better than most of her American counterparts.

4.0 out of 5 stars A must for Smoke Fairies's fans, 7 July 2014

This review is from: Ghosts (Audio CD)
This good value double albums is a collection of mainly early Smoke Fairies recordings that didn't appear on their first two albums and is a not surprising mixture of the excellent (e,g, Frozen Heart, Living with Ghosts), the good (e.g. Sunshine, Bones and When You Grow Old) and two or three that probably won't merit a release if it wasn't for their historical and curiosity value.

A must for Smoke Fairies's fans and - even if you're not - it's still pretty decent listening for anyone who has a weakness for slightly off-beat bluesy folk - especially where the performers can actually sing.

Everything about Ms Bakken oozes quality.

As a singer she has everything - a great voice, beautifully mellow tonality coupled with just the right amount of (slightly) quirky edge, flawless delivery and that intuitive ability to get to the heart and soul of a song.

As a songwriter she is simply brilliant, combining haunting melodies with lyrics that explore the full range of human emotions from the touching vanities of Powder Room Collapse to the beautiful pathos of Contents of My Heart and the stoic meloncholy of October Nights.

A class act who deserves to be heard by a much wider audience.

This album was recording in the US and has more of a country feel than her more clearly jazz based albums, but

Cello, voice and loop pedal are all that Ms Wade needs to produce a poignant, jazz/blues infusion that works on both the heart and the feet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daring, original and utterly mesmerising., 14 May 2014

A semi-improvised musical interpretation of Hans Christian Anderson's beautiful story of The Little Match Girl resulting from a collaboration between Anna Von Hausswolff and Mathia Bye that is much closer to a tonal poem in 9 movements than a series of individual Songs.
The music floats, soars and penetrates through an interweave of almost hypnotic drones, loops and counterpoints, and when you think that it can't get anymore intense Ms Von Hausswolff's crystal clear soprano drifts through musical mist like a fragile angel emerging from a world of thorns.
Daring, original and utterly mesmerising. This is what serious musicians are capable of when they have the courage to follow their instincts and put artistic integrity before widespread approval.

American negro spirtuals arranged and sung by a Norwegian jazz singer.

A lesser artist may have opted for viruousity and self-indulgence, but Ms Asbjornsen's stripped-back, understated vocals and arrangements capture to perfection all the underlying passion and pathos inherent in the songs.

A beautiful, poignant and quietly uplifting album that defies genre defination and rewards those who can appreciate passions tempered by dignified restraint.

5.0 out of 5 stars Renee's Coming of Age, 27 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Skylark (Audio CD)
Five years on from her album 'Renee Olstead' (which she recorded when she was 15) comes another superb piece of work from this wonderfully talented young lady. This time she combines a selection of songs from the classic American songbook. a couple of more oldstyle R&B interpretations with three self-penned numbers. The songs run the gamut of moods and tempo and the most complimentary things I can say about her own self-penned numbers is that they don't stand apart - either in quality or mood - from the rest of the album.

Vocally she has matured and her delivery and interpretation is even better than on her previous album. The downside to Ms Olstead's musical talent is that she is also a successful actress and I suspect that she can earn a lot more money starring in a popular television series than pursuing a career as a jazz singer (even a brilliant jazz singer) so regrettably there may be another five years (or possibly more) between albums.

On a more optimistic note, she may come to the conclusion that there are dozens (possibly hundreds) of extremely talented actressses in the world, but very few singers who come close to possessing an iota of her vocal talent.

Recorded when she was just 15, this is journey through the American songbook by one of the most talented female vocalists to emerge in years. Listening to this album it is almost impossible to believe that the singer is just a girl - the vocal range, timing and, most importantly, the emotional resonance of her delivery is that of a mature woman who has experienced the range of passions, hopes, loses and betrayals that are inherent in the songs.

Forget about her age. Miss Olstead is a brilliant singer and this is a brilliant album.

Martha Tilston is arguably the finest folk singer currently plying her trade and this album shows her talents to the full. Each song is a small, perfectly formed vignette of the sights, sounds and feelings that impact on the singer's life. Profound, meloncholy, amusing, reflective and prophetic in turns - each song tells a story and each story is told with understated emotion and absolute mastery of instruments and voice.

Modern folk just dosen't get any bettre than this.
