5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!, 15 May 2017
Superb film – for me, the equal of the first one, and perhaps slightly better. The best characters for me are Rocket and Groot, and I think there is a good balance between humour and sadness, combined with superb visuals. The music is appropriate to the scenes, and it is brilliantly matched to the action, particularly in the events involving Yondu and Rocket on the ship, and Rocket on his own on the planet, as well as in the funeral scene. It's rare to encounter such a great combination in films that are released these days, and it's something that must take a lot of hard and creative work. Yondu did well, as did all the main characters, really. The only thing I didn't like about it was the gold people, who I found boring and cliché – but luckily they played only a minor role in the film.

In terms of the humour, Rocket is by far the funniest character, with his witty wisecracks – and we did see another side of him that was only really glimpsed towards the end of the first film. I did find the toilet humour from Drax and the male characters especially a bit tiresome and jarring – but then, perhaps, it's a bloke's thing.

I don't like 'super-hero' films in general, finding them all more or less the same, by-the-numbers and instantly forgettable, so I hope there will not be attempts to integrate the unique Guardians into other films in this genre. That would be an instant turn-off for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good addition to the sequence – not as good as earlier books, 15 May 2017

OK, though not as great as earlier books in the sequence (as was the case with the last one). There's far more tension and plot development in the earlier books (like Explorer, down to all the business with Machigi). Still a welcome addition to the sequence, but I would have appreciated more on Bren's Atevi, as ever, and the focus on Mospheira is not particularly interesting, involving a lot of talking with humans but not much else. It does feel a little bit like a filler. The last sequence I enjoyed was the Machigi one, and I wish he would appear again somewhere. I feel that the introduction of the human young and their integration into the story really weakened these last couple of books – they are a boring irritation, as are the other humans (excluding Bren, of course) apart from the captains and Kate on the station, and perhaps the leader of the Mospheirans in very small doses. There was barely anything about the Atevi in this book – and for me they and their relationship with each other and Bren and his development are the most interesting elements of the stories.

The other observation is about the cover. Though I generally like the artist's covers for the sequence, I don't think Bren has been made to look attractive enough on this cover. I much preferred his look on the cover of Deceiver, for example, and a slightly older, good-looking version of him would have been preferable.

Excellent. The 'rustic chorus' is much missed in the new version.
